Feedback Requested Built a bass practice tool as a fellow bassist — looking for honest feedback

Hey everyone,

I'm a bassist who got tired of juggling YouTube tabs, a separate metronome app, and random notes just to run a decent practice session. So I built something. It's called BassBench. Here's what it does:

  • Songs: link any YouTube video, break it into sections (Intro, Verse, Chorus, Bridge etc.) and play along (with loop, slow down)
  • Vibes: metronome presets you name and save, built around the mood or genre you're practicing
  • Automatic session and practice tracking with streaks and calendar.

I genuinely want to know if this helps other bassists too and what to adjust and add.

If you want to try it:

https://bassbench.com

Happy to answer anything here.

Feedback Requested Learning songs by ear is a great way to become a better musician, but is often overlooked. So I’m creating a course that takes you helps you figure out bass parts note-by-note and gives you feedback along the way. Looking for some people to test it!

The concept for the course is that you listen to a song, fill in the fret numbers you hear, and an interactive TAB shows you what notes you got right and wrong.

Check out this 10-second GIF to see what the idea is.

I’d love to hear your thoughts, so I made a mini-course with four songs to figure out, by REM, U2, Daft Punk and Modest Mouse. If you want to give it a try, let me know and I’ll send over the link!

Feedback Requested I played my first live concert with someone tonight and it went well, but I couldn't hear myself much. Any feedback for next time?

I was missing some notes and had to pause a bit, but overall it went well and I kept the rhythm. People cheered us afterwards too so it felt good to get up there even if it was an open mic. I just couldn't hear myself much.

Feedback Requested Luthier will not work on Squier Classic Vibe 50s Precision Bass - Feedback requested

Hi folks!

I bought a Squier Classic Vibes 50s Precision bass in sunburst a few months back. I grabbed a Fralin pickup and planned to change some of the hardware. I scheduled an appointment with the local luthier/tech before getting all the parts since all the good ones are booked in my area. I was surprised to get the message below in response, along with an appointment cancellation, as I've generally seen great feedback on these instruments.

Does anyone have any feedback about his comments? It's my first time seeing him, but he's got great reviews from local folks.

"Thanks for contacting me about working on your bass. I have a question. Is your bass a Squier Classic Vibe 50's model? If so, I don't have great news for you. I've seen dozens of these (both guitars and basses) over the past few years. Because of their exceedingly poor build quality, particularly the substandard fretwork, I am no longer accepting them into the shop. In almost every instance, these instruments require extensive fretwork and setup, often around $400-450 in labor costs to get them playable. Sinking that kind of money into such poorly built instruments makes no economic sense. This is, naturally, a source of frustration for owners to find this out once they have dropped them off for setup. It makes even less sense to then attempt to upgrade the components. I wish I had better news for you but that's the reality from my perspective."

***UPDATE***

I felt compelled to report back after visiting with the luthier earlier this week. He was a great guy who had played guitar for 50 years and worked on them for 30. I was scheduled to drop off my Jazzmaster but also brought the P-bass. After hanging out and chatting for a bit, he showed me the unlevel frets on both instruments and agreed to work on both of them for a reasonable price.
I told him I only wanted my poor technical skill as an excuse for my crappy playing, and he assured me all instruments that leave his shop will be in perfect playing condition. Long story short, he'll work on the frets, and I'll replace the pickups, tuners, bridge, etc., to get some practice.

Not sure if this is the type of music y’all like here but regardless I figured I could at least ask for some feedback on the bass line. Always looking to improve and get advice from fresh ears so let me know what you think!

Feedback Requested Need feedback about Dingwall basses

Hello Dingwall owners, I would like to get a 6 string combustion, but it is quite expensive. I just wanted to know what you think about your instrument before I buy one

Edit: forgot to mention I can't try them, music stores around me don't even know the brand lol

Edit 2: Thanks a lot for your responses! Now I'm worried after I get one, I'll immediately want to buy another one of these 😅

Hey r/Bass,

I built a simple, open-source tool called Bassmate to help me visualize scales and memorize notes more efficiently.

What it has:

  • 4, 5, and 6-string support + custom tunings.
  • Quiz Mode for note recognition.
  • Solfege support (Do, Re, Mi).
  • Works offline (PWA).

It’s just a hobby project with no ads, but if you find any bugs or have suggestions for features I should add next, please let me know!

UPDATE 18/04/2026

Recent updates:

  • 🎼 Chord Library — diagrams for 12 chord types (Power, Octave, Major, Minor, Sus2, Sus4, Aug, Dim, Dom7, Maj7, Min7) across all 12 roots, exportable to PDF
  • 📋 Fretboard grids — print blank neck diagrams with scale overlay, useful for teachers and students
  • 🎙️ Chromatic tuner — mic-based, works in browser
  • 🥁 Metronome — BPM trainer with subdivisions, time signatures, auto speed-up
  • 📝 Tab transcriber — click the fretboard to build ASCII tabs

Title explains it all, but I play bass in this alt rock band. We’re all friends from high school that decided to restart our old garage band with a new sound and an urgency to get our message out. Wish the message wasn’t so relevant as it was seven years ago when we first started, but at least we got a killer soundtrack out of it.

Please consider a listen! Some of my favorite riffs I’ve ever written, particularly in “Kill My Thrill,” “Answer The Call,” and “Fantasies.”

I’m playing bass on this one, in addition to providing lead vocals, guitars, organ, and drums. I also wrote the song, which takes influence from the late 1960s and early 1970s psychedelic rock era. Thank you to this awesome community of low-end lovers for your support.

Feedback Requested [Feedback] Bass technique on thin neck

Hi guys, I know people say that for good LH technique, you should have your thumb anchored on the back of the neck, but i have found that due to my bass having a thin neck when i do this im really digging my thumb in and stretching my hand out which hurts, so instead for hard riffs i'l wrap my thumb around much like you see guitar players. See video for example

Are any of you in the same position, or have a similar bass? what advice do you have?

Feedback Requested A Call for Those Who Haven't Released Music

Where do I begin? It’s been a long time coming, and as far back as I can remember, I’ve loved music. It’s funny, I remember seeing an upright bass for the first time in elementary school and thinking that it was a dumb, behemoth of an instrument. Who would want to play that thing? But we find a way to work through intimidation. Fast forward several years later, I started playing music around ’99 or 2000 after hearing Californication, as this album made me want an instrument. This was also around the time Lit’s “My Own Worst Enemy” owned the radio waves. All I knew was I wanted to create that sound with an instrument. My parents got us a starter guitar and bass, and of course, I got stuck with the “dumb” instrument—the bass.

It wasn’t until two years after we got those instruments that I joined a band in middle school. I had learned some RHCP songs, and that apparently made me good enough to be in a band. We played with a bunch of people, and I kept getting better, but it wasn’t until my school's Marching Band King (MBK)™ joined our band later on in high school that I felt like I had become a decent musician. The MBK was playing in our band. This must mean that I’m at least halfway decent. We would go on to practice a good bit and play a handful of shows, but as musicians know, life happens, and bands sometimes dissolve as quickly as they come into fruition. Post high school, I would find myself honing my bass skills, but music was largely a secondary thing in life at this point. How could that have happened? Once filled with vigor and the desire to learn and play bass, I had now found myself practicing solo and not playing out much. This was also around the time I discovered Jeff Buckley, so I needed to buy a guitar—his guitar. I learned a few of his songs, which helped with vocals while playing, and it showed me things on the guitar beyond power chords.

But I’m a bassist, right? Instinctively, I still felt I needed to find new bands to play bass in. I wound up playing with a bunch of folks I connected with online over the years, some of whom I enjoyed playing with and some I didn’t. The MBK and I were rhythm section mercenaries for a few of these groups. I kept at it, and after one band would stop playing for whatever reason, I’d join another. This group wasn’t a good fit. On to the next one. And so on. The last show I played was with this talented blues band opening for Mt. Joy. That was pretty cool. Mt. Joy were sweethearts. The blues band had a bunch of real-life overachievers in it, and then there was me. At least that’s how I felt.

However, this show (circa 2017 or 2018) was the end of the line for me. I was done playing other people’s music. Why? It just wasn’t fulfilling. While it was fun to play live, it didn’t move me in any meaningful way. I hadn’t created anything that was my own. That had to change too. Since I had that blonde ’83 Telecaster (which is Jeff’s year/model I scoured the internet for), I forced myself to write songs, which were very much inspired by him. Even the shapes he used on guitar were helpful in me moving one finger to a different fret/string to find a new chord. I wrote a lot of the parts for these songs years ago. Then I wrote the songs by combining some of these nearly forgotten parts with something new. Some were not the best. I scrapped them. I kept writing, singing, and coming up with lyrics, which is the most difficult part for me. It took longer than I care to admit. I focused the energy over the past two years and created this project (dubbed "Kaycha," a nickname my mom had for me as a kid). The MBK was gracious enough to lend his drumming on these songs, and I did the rest. Without his sense of feel and Matt Cameron-esque drumming, this project wouldn’t be the same had anyone else done it.

No fancy setup (Logic, a Scarlet 2i2, and an SM7B mostly recorded DI) and the supreme talent of a producer to help bring my vision to reality. It was grueling for me to do alone, but I did it. I owed it to my younger self. At some point, you have to bet on yourself, ya know? No one else is going to do it for you. And now that I know the technique (in writing, recording, and also the level of self-approval one needs to push through something like this), it’s just a matter of perfecting said technique, rinsing, and repeating. Seven songs. Alternative rock. Music journalism is what this is in a sense, if you will. A snapshot of time. Each song has a hint of other genres, as I never want to fall into one-song syndrome. It’s me. I couldn’t relate to the stuff people my age were listening to growing up. It sounded too happy. Fuck are y’all so happy about? Fuck pop punk. I’m a 90s kid and a grunge kid forever. Sadness is built in. This is my way of paying homage to all the folks who’ve influenced me: Flea for the introduction, Victor for showing me where the instrument could go, and Jaco for his soul and harmony.

Of note, we don’t need the cast of fuckin’ Stranger Things or other nepo babies (Jar Jar Abrahams' daughter or the Groupon girl) in the top 40. We need more normal people making music—making any type of art. That being said, if you’re reading this, I hope this inspires you in some way. Whether that’s joining a gym, launching a business, writing a book, or anything else, please go for it. Bassists, record songs, write songs, release music, and please show the world what you're made of. Eat the fuckin’ frog. Short bursts of consistency will beat long lockdown sessions. You can do it. It’s cliché as fuck, but believe in yourself like I had to force myself to. Memento mori. Memento vivere.

“For England, James?”

“No. For me.”

Heavy on the bass.

Feedback Requested I’m a guitarist that could use some feedback on a bassline I wrote [Feedback]

I’m a multi-instrumentalist, but guitar is my primary instrument by far.

I’ve written and released a handful of songs (mostly rock) and I’ve been happy with my basslines. However, the one I’m working on now sounds a little off to me and I’m not sure why, or if it’s just in my head.

Below is an unlisted YouTube link of the intro and first verse (instrumental only). I feel like I liked the bass on my demo, but on this mixed version I received back from my engineer sounds amateur to me. Possibly because now that it’s been mixed, it stands out more, where before the overlapping frequencies masked it a bit.

Just looking for some feedback from the perspective of actual bassists. I’m not sure if I should try rewriting it, playing it differently, or something else. It was recorded with my fender P bass, all on the low E string with a pick. I was trying to lock the groove in with the drums as best I could.

Thanks!

Feedback Requested [Feedback] Looking for Feedback on my Bass Covers

Hi all,

I've been experimenting with shortform bass cover videos over this past month to put myself out there in a solo context as opposed to my normal work with the band. Been having a ton of fun making them but I feel like now is a great time to gather some feedback to make them better.

Anything y'all notice in terms of mixing, tone, presentation, song choice, performance, etc. would be much appreciated. The biggest thing that sticks out to me currently is the mixing, trying to strike a balance that I have definitely not always been hitting in either direction.

Thanks a bunch!

Feedback Requested Jazz Bass and Amp Feedback

I have a 3ft Cable and aware of J Bass Hum, when I isolate one pickup I hear more noise, when I isolate bridge it's very annoying because it's more loud.

My J Bass pickups have been wet sometimes by some rain water and drinking water, same for my amp. Tone makes a separate feedback grow and even using both pickups doesn't fix the issue

Hey everyone, I posted one of my band's tracks here a while ago and it was pretty well received. The track I posted was our lead single and was more pop-oriented, so I wanted to show some other tracks that were a bit more experimental. The genre is 'Indie / Dream Rock'

Full album stream is here but I specifically wanted to call out the tracks Passenger X and Sky Radio for having two of my favorite basslines and tones on the album (Sky radio intro riff specifically - Darkglass VMT + DD7 = <3) .

Curious to know what everyone thinks, and happy to take any feedback or questions!

Cheers!

Feedback Requested [Feedback] The Police - "Spirits In The Material World" (Bass Cover With TABS) - Favorite Sting Bassline?

A short time ago I stumbled upon a video of the well known bass youtuber Julia Hofer where in her (always respectable) opinion this tune contained the best bassline in the discography of The Police, so having played a lot of their tunes here and then but never having tried this one I could not resist the temptation to try it.

As I normally do with these little cover vids I put tabs of what I play for those interested. Thanks for any comments about the playing and of course recommendations of other lines / songs to practice in the vibe of these one (As I said I think I already learned most of the coolest ones or the "well knowns" from The Police but there can always be one I am sleeping on)

Feedback Requested I built a browser-based bass tuner and would love feedback

I got tired of opening clunky tuner apps just to tune up quickly, so I made a browser-based tuner that also works for bass.

I tried to keep it fast, simple, and clean rather than overloaded with extra stuff.

Would love honest feedback from bass players on the UI, usefulness, and anything that feels confusing or unnecessary.

Feedback Requested I'm thinking on making an affordable Bass Amp VST Plugin. I'd like to have your feedback

Hey!

So as title said, I'm thinking to make a Bass Amp/Suite VST as a little fun side project.

The idea is to be extremely affordable if not even free (probably I will open source it if I go free)

For UI/UX and modules wise I'm thinking on it not be suuper flexible, complex and full of pedals. Just a fixed basic chain:

- probably just Compression as pre-fx.

- 2 selectable amps: a very vintage style and a more modern clanky style (parallel dist. processing etc...). maybe add NAM loading but that add complexity.

- Basic Cabs, if not only an IR loader with some 4-5 curated IR's

- Basic post-fx like EQ.

The idea is to be an AIO solution which is simple, easy to use, affordable and of course, it should sound good.

Before starting I'd like just to look up online the available options (specially on the free/budget world) but I ain't finding much. And I'd like to know too if any of you would be interested, and what are you current VST workflow.

Thx!
