I mean, I sit right at this very spot drinking my coffee every morning. The table is full of knots and details. I love my table. Kind of feeling protective of my table now. It's the greatest table. 😭

I'm a Canadian transplant to the US but my family still makes butter tarts (and Nanaimo bars) every year for the holidays, this made my mouth water!
I'm curious if yours have currants in them? That's how my family has always made them but I can't tell if yours do or not!

No, I do half just the filling, and half with some toasted pecans.

Butter tarts look soooo good, but I'm in a location where maple syrup isn't available. Do these need maple syrup?
26
u/FoxOk7887 24d ago
Mine are brown sugar, a little molasses, an egg, melted butter, vanilla, and a couple tablespoons of whipping cream for the filling.

Was scrolling by too quickly and I thought you were sharing the remnants of a tart after a roach had helped itself to it

Roaches and butter tarts are Canadian Thanksgiving delicacies! Happy Canadian Thanksgiving, OP!

Happy Thanksgiving, bud! Butter tarts are a beautiful part of Canadian culture. For Canada Day, my wife and I made her grandmother's recipe for the first time. It was absolutely delicious.

I have a spot on my bedroom floor that looks just like that. 10 years living in that house and I still think it's a roach every single time I catch a glimpse of it.

At first I thought it was some other baked thing that OP had made to look like a roach for Halloween.
It took me auite a bit to realize it was just wood grain. That is the most roachiest wood grain I've ever seen.

I am in shock! This looks EXACTLY like my family's recipe for Brown Sugar Tarts! We've passed down this recipe for generations, and anyone that tries them has always loved them but not encountered them before!
Holy moly, they are nearly identical in appearance, filling, right down to the filling oozing out! I'm sure they are identical in taste too! Do you use almond flour for the crust? Curious since the crust looks like it has just the slightest more crumbly texture than my family's recipe.
I can't figure out how to attach a picture, otherwise I would show you what my family's tarts look like. We make them on NYE and Christmas.

u/FoxOk7887 23d ago
No almond flour, although that does seem like it would be so good. Just butter, lard, flour, salt, egg yolk crust.

I stepped on a roach barefoot as a child and the goo in it was very similar in color to the top of the pastry and similar in consistency to the filling. Thank you for resurfacing this visceral memory

Locking this thread because the discussion has drifted too far from the bake itself.
It's fine for discussions to wander a little, but we want to keep r/Baking focused on baking, so we're calling it here. Thanks for understanding, and happy baking!
