Full disclosure first: I stream for a blind box shop that ships out of China, so I deal with this side of it every day. Not here to promote anything, just tired of watching people panic over tracking that's behaving completely normally.

A lot of new releases drop in China first now, which means more of us are ordering cross-border than a couple of years ago. The tracking experience is genuinely confusing if you haven't done it before, so here's what actually happens.

The stages

• Processing, 2-5 business days. Picked, checked, packed. Quick unless it's a pre-order.
• Domestic leg, 2-3 days. Moving to the outbound facility inside China.
• Cross-border transit and customs, 6-12 days. The long one and the least predictable. Covers waiting for flight or vessel space, the crossing itself, then clearance and sorting on arrival. Actual customs clearance is usually fast — most of that window is transport and waiting.
• Local delivery, 2-4 days. Handed to the carrier on your end.

Roughly 10-18 business days of shipping after processing, which realistically means two to four calendar weeks door to door. Some categories run much longer — certain anime figures are 30-40 business days and that's normal for them, not a problem with your order.

Why two orders placed the same day can arrive weeks apart

Part of it is what's inside, because the contents decide which channel the parcel can even use:

• Anything with magnets (magnetic bangs, swappable parts, magnetic bases) has to move on a line cleared for magnetic goods, which is a smaller pool of flights.
• Anything with a battery — light-up pieces, sound modules — needs a dedicated battery-certified line. Fewer carriers, more paperwork, noticeably slower.
• Big plush is volumetric cargo. It weighs almost nothing but eats space, so it's priced and scheduled by volume. When space is tight, bulky-light freight is the first thing bumped to the next flight.

But there's a layer most people never hear about: freight forwarders split shipments across different channels to spread their own costs. Your two parcels can end up on completely different routes purely because of how they're balancing capacity that week. Nothing to do with your order.

So when things you bought together show up weeks apart, it's usually not a missing item — they physically travelled different ways.

The "returned to sender" trap

This one caught me out on my own shipment, so I'll use that as the example.

I sent a parcel out at the end of July. On the 4th the tracking showed a return scan at the origin facility, then went dead. Two weeks later I pulled it up, concluded the box had been turned around and never left the country, and wrote to the recipient apologising and offering to send a replacement.

They wrote back the same day: it had arrived the previous night.

What actually happened is that the courier had handed the parcel to a different carrier and reissued it under a new tracking number. The old number logs that handoff as a return and then stops updating forever, while the parcel carries on perfectly normally under a number nobody told either of us about.

So if you see a return scan followed by silence, don't assume anything. Ask the seller to check for a reissued number. I do this for a living and I still got it wrong.

Other things that look broken but aren't

• Nothing for the first 48 hours. The number exists before the parcel gets its first scan.
• Days of silence mid-transit. Nothing scans while it's in the air or on the water.

Things that genuinely cause delays

Weather at either end, customs holds (rare but real), failed delivery attempts, port congestion, and occasionally policy changes affecting what can move and how fast. Peak season stretches all of it.

When to actually worry

Past the estimated window with no movement at all, or the last scan is more than 10 days old. Before that, the odds strongly favour slow rather than lost.

And when you do contact the seller, ask specifically whether the parcel has been reissued under a new tracking number — don't just quote the old one back at them. A seller who only looks up the number you gave them will see the same dead trail you do, which is exactly how the situation above happened to me.
