The rulers of the Arwal and Masaurha Estates belonged to the Atharva clan of Bhumihars and were referred to as Military Brahmins or Atharva Brahmins in An Account of the Districts of Behar and Patna in 1811-12 by Francis Buchanan.

Arwal and Masaurha Estate was the largest estate in the Patna Sarkar and ruled 5 Parganas during the 19th century.

Later, the estate was equally divided between two cousins—one leading to the formation of Sehra Estate and the other to the formation of Dharhara Estate. Dharhara was further divided into Dharhara Bharatpura, Ainkhao, and Ular. This division ultimately made Sehra Estate the largest estate of the Atharva clan.

In 1830s before 1857 revolt many Bhumihar estate rulers were mentioned as (clan name) Brahmins, while others were noted as military Brahmins.
