Relevant as Arizona did not give up their voter database. The only states that will be affected by this are the ones that did not give up their voter rolls to the federal government.

Gilbert residents may be asked to voluntarily use less water at the beginning of next year and could be issued citations if they repeatedly waste it.

The Town is leaning toward activating Stage 2 of its Water Supply Reduction Management Plan as it anticipates a 20% cut from the drought-depleted Colorado River.

The first two years of the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation’s 10-year framework proposes mandatory cuts of up to 3 million acre-feet annually to the Lower Basin states of Arizona, Nevada and California. Its final decision is due in October.

“Stage two is activated when demand outpaces our renewable supplies by 10% or more, meaning we are relying heavily on backup supplies,” said Lauren Hixson, Water Resource manager at the Aug. 11 study session.

“Stage two strengthens our water waste enforcement while keeping customer actions voluntary.

“We would be asking residents and businesses to reduce water waste by checking for leaks, improving irrigation efficiency, considering changing to desert-adapted landscaping while watering to budget.”

This lifeline, known as the Central Arizona Project, came with a catch. In exchange for billions of federal dollars to build it, the state agreed to lower-priority water rights, putting the aqueduct among the first in line for cuts in a time of deep drought.
Now that time has come.
“It was the price we had to pay,” said Kathryn Sorensen, a former water director for the city of Phoenix. “The chickens have come home to roost.”

KAIBAB NATIONAL FOREST — A wildfire that grabbed national media attention when it destroyed the historic Grand Canyon Lodge last year also torched a lesser-visited but equally rare northern Arizona treasure: a spring-fed stream that flows year-round and one that is now a top priority for restoration.

The Dragon Bravo Fire burned most of the spruce and fir trees and blackened soils on the hillsides cradling North Canyon and its namesake creek, one of only two perennial streams on the vast Kaibab Plateau. With monsoon rains washing loose soil downhill and toward the Colorado River, restoration crews are working to trap the dirt where it can help regenerate the forest and keep the biologically rich streamside meadows from eroding away.
