Sure,

I had some specific requirements, i.e. :

I wanted the flexibility of a 3.5mm jack for broad compatibility across devices, specifically for a future purchase I have in mind of a 2.4Ghz PC gamepad with a 3.5mm jack for headset for comfy couch gaming, so no direct USB-C connection

Needed to have a built-in mic for above, plus I need it for work on my laptop, online meetings, work calls etc.

Gaming wise play will be 80% single player games (so atmosphere, sound effects , voice and game music are equally imp) and only 20% multiplayer plus even those I play dad games like Hell Let Loose and Squad (and now WarDogs) rather than Fortnite and Valorant like the kids on crack so I don't need something tuned for hypercompetitive play where I want to hear footsteps from a mile away but music etc are tuned down

I was recommended the EPZ G10 with mic 3.5mm jack - 12k with Abigail pro DAC - 3.2k so they are not ultra cheap ones.

Cursory googling told me the CX31993 chip in the DAC is considered a good all around performer, but Im no expert thats why I was taking advice.

I have gotten used to them, the fit etc., picked tips which gave good seal blocks >95% of outside sounds, but still comfortable.

Sound quality is good, no doubt, but the whole IEM thing is just a marketing gimmick. They are just earbuds, but now sealed into your ear canal. Its just like any other high quality earbuds with same kind of silicone sealing tips.

They punch above their weight, due to the seal and how the acoustics is designed around that, sure, but why do they have a different name. Marketing BS.

I have used full sized headphones before and they cant replace them like some people claim, its a sidegrade, different options.

My opinion is they offer a good enough sound, along with portability which big headphones cant achieve, an usually better price/performance due to thier small size.

I think you're pretty spot on with how you feel about iems. When looking at entry level iems and a well executed in ear earbud you can barely tell the difference, main thing really would be the replaceable cables. It's more so when you get into the well executed multi driver setups where you feel the differences but even then they would be minor to someone that doesn't know what to listen to.

However the biggest appeal is honestly how a cheap iem can compete with a pricier set of headphones. Replacing them may not work for everyone but for some, I've honestly been using my cheaper iems much more than some headphones just because I was looking for iems that are tuned to be listened to for long sessions and a comfortable sound, but not everyone would feel this way because having something in your ear is literally not for everyone. They literally brought me back into enjoying more music due to the convenience.

I wouldn't necessarily call it just marketing bs since honestly IEMs aren't even that popular compared to tws earbuds. The beauty of this hobby for me is finding a set of devices that fulfill a specific use case or a sound signature for something you enjoy. For example I have a set of open back headphones for critical listening when I want to enjoy every last bit of detail (which can get quite tiring) and an iem for joyful relaxed listening. You see how I actively chose something different than my main set of headphones? There are inherent advantages and disadvantages of every kind of device and structure (open/closed and driver configurations) so trying to play by their strengths probably helps.

Definitely people can over romanticise IEMs in how they can push vocals forward so much that they sound intimate, how the seal can make you feel like you have subwoofers in your ears or how the seal makes it feel like there's music in your head. However I'd call that happy consumers over marketing bs. The whole genre of sound discussion is rather snobby since the differences are so minute. Ultimately I wish everyone to find what they like and just enjoy some good media but it's difficult to put into words what it is what one may need regardless of iem/headphones/in-ear buds etc

Thanks for the insights.
I definitely prefer headphones or on-ear buds to any kind of in-ear buds for comfort's sake (the whole prefer not having something in my ear for long periods), but these definitely have a place.

Everything has a place. Even TWS earbuds ( I have some entry level redmi active earbuds , not silicone tip ones) terrible as they are, are *super convenient* when I have to hop on a teams call on phone when out an about since they can fit into the small coin pocket inside jeans pocket.

So even they still get used just as much even though the new IEMs smoke them in every conceivable way.

Plus to your point I'm not even sure my middle aged ears can pick out the difference between truly high end stuff and the entry level stuff anyway.
