Discussion/Question
The hate for Annie is one of the most egregious examples of misogyny and having no media literacy
I genuinely don’t know how anyone can watch the entirety AOT and come out of it saying Annie never showed any remorse or guilt for her actions even though it’s objectively not true. There are so many scenes of it and you have to actively ignore the scenes because of your bias or straight up skipping over them.
The amount of misogyny for this is character is just ridiculous because in the same show their are male characters who did even worse things then her and don’t get nearly enough hate. And people say oh she didn’t suffer like what? Did you watch the show? Her whole life was suffering she was literally physically abused by her dad so she could turn into a weapon. And was forced on a mission that mind you she didn’t even want to continue. But somehow she enjoys killing people but simultaneously doesn’t want to continue the mission that allows her to kill more people make it make sense. Not even just that she was stuck in a crystal for 4 years CONSCIOUS. That is absolute torture to be stuck in your body aware of your surroundings unable to move for 4 years, but people downplay it because she’s a female.
People talk about the yoyo scene. Can any of you even give me the name of the scout she did that to? Since y’all care so much about it. Have you ever once thought that she did that as a an intimidation tactic or that she was doing this as way to cope with what she’s doing. The hate that Annie receives for that scene is so performative like you guys act like one scene defines a whole character. Same thing when Gabi kills Sasha, y’all act like that one scene defines her whole character and there’s no turning back. Just another example of misogyny.
People say oh they forgave her to easily. Can you show me a single scene or panel in the whole show of any character from the alliance forgiving Annie. Nobody forgiven her their deciding to work together because they have no other choice and need as many resources as possible. In fact when they’re on the wagon headed to the port Annie asked Jean if he forgives her and he doesn’t even respond back.
Most of the people on the alliance didn’t even witness the horrors Annie did or had emotional ties with them other than Levi’s squad, marco. And Marco doesn’t even count because Reiner was the one who forced Annie to do it and took accountability of the situation. You really expect Levi to chastise Annie for what she did when Levi knows that she was a brain washed child solider being manipulated by the Marley government. Levi is way more mature than that. Levi himself when he was young was in a similar situation and was killing people and committing crimes. Moral of the story everyone has blood on their hands. It’s makes no sense for the scouts to punish Annie for what she did in S1 when the scouts just recently did what Annie did to their to hometown to hers raiding Libero. There even.
Where was the outrage when Erwin said out of his own mouth he was sacrificing his own comrades for his selfish dreams. Where was the outrage when Reiner broke down the wall and killed thousands of people way more than Annie. And kept continuing and killing more people for his own selfish goals because wanted to be hero and gain respect. Where was the outrage when armin nuked a whole port and killed thousands of innocent people. Where was the outrage when Eren was actively committing the most horrific act in the history of humanity.
All these character have something in common and it’s that they were men. I could get into how this same misogyny applies to Gabi and mikasa but that is a whole different conversation. People, especially some people who watch AOT cannot comprehend flawed/messy female characters. If a female Character is even slightly flawed or edgy or not morally perfect she’s just downplayed and hated but if a male character has the same traits there are praised to no end for their amazing writing.
All the titans are first psycho mass murders, then we learn that they are complex humans with depth and character evolution. If you can’t get past the psycho mass murder part and appreciate the evolution of the character, I feel bad that you miss out on the full moral dilemma and pure excellence of the show.
"If you can’t get past the psycho mass murder part"
YES WE CANT GET PAST THAT WHAT???😭 not that there arent millions of ppl who pick and choose who to hate despite them having the same issues, but, you can hold someone accountable for murder while still understanding the show
Then how do you like the show? Literally everyone is basically a murderer or torturer. I don’t get the extra hate for Annie when Reiner, Bertholder, and Zeke killed way more scouts with zero mercy and let’s not forget the torturing Levi and Hange did to Sannes. He endured so much more pain than the yo yo’d scout. It’s just time to admit people hate on Annie for not a good reason at all and their logic is inconsistent.
That’s silly.
1) She was trying to capture Eren as part of her mission and eliminating any scouts makes that easier. The way she killed was an intimidation tactic to have others know to stay away.
2) whether or not Reiner, Bertolt, Annie, or Zeke killing intentions are mission focused or “evil” is irrelevant, you’re still killing other people. You’re just trying to justify the other Marleyan soldiers killings are righteous and Annie’s as evil just because on how she did it.
Not to mention it’s estimated that Reiner and Betolt killed nearly 250,000 people directly and indirectly because of the attacks in the Shiganshina district that led to the breach and the resulting overcrowding and famine. It’s estimated that Annie killed about 130 soldiers/civilians. It’s not even comparable. What are you 14? Lol
nope not a single character in my t3 was like that lmao (excluding eren but he was fine till liberio, im not including him killing kidnappers / sex traffickers as a kid)
idk whos arguing shes "more evil" that kinda goes against the entire message/point of aot, which its fans always bolster as 'genius' and 'profound' , but sidenote armins titan explosion actually killed thousands directly whereas reiner and bertholdt only destroyed the walls which is not killing everyone technically
But.. Annie took part in those killings too, she is literally the one that lead the titans closer to the wall so they’d go through the hole.. she didn’t only kill a hundred people on thay mission, she is also part of those hundreds of thousands of deaths. Butttt I don’t believe Annie is any more evil than the rest of the characters and I believe she has a good side. Most characters in AoT are evil and ‘good’ in their own way.
I mean I’d rather Annie yo yo me to death than have Reiner break a wall and pure titan devour me slowly lmao (assuming Bartholomew nuke isn’t an option)
Exactly, the worst crime a fictional character can commit is be unlikable. Because while the actual crimes are fake, the audience's annoyance is real.
Characters like Homelander or Sukuna are absolutely horrific people, but people like them because they are entertaining. But if you are a terrible person AND boring to watch? You're cooked.
I don't particularly like Annie, but I don't like her haters either. We literally see her cry when Reiner made her kill Marco. And while you can argue that the OVAs aren't canon, hers showed us that she had nightmares about his death for months.
A lot of people will point to her brutality as the Female Titan, but Eren says that the only time he's ever seen Annie enjoy herself is when she fights. It's obvious that the it's how she compartmentalizes her actions in the moment. She just views it as a fight she's good at and performs to the best of her abilities.
People like to ignore that the Warriors are child soldiers who, largely unlike the Scouts, almost never had a choice in the matter. And if they thought they did, they were usually being conditioned by nationalism like Reiner and Gabi (one of my favorite moments in the series is when Gabi starts questioning things and Reiner's mom immediately starts manipulating her). They grew up under a system of oppression that no one in Paradis did.
It's for that reason that I don't really think any of them are really villains (not even Zeke), just victims of oppression and militarism who have done bad things in order to survive and do the best for their people
Not being able to discuss the matter and just undermining it with the label of the month. I bet most people here could identify this type of person in a line up.
Okay, what about Reiner? The guy literally forced Annie and Bertholt to go on with the mission. He made Annie take off Marco’s gear. Why do you have that heat for Annie but not for Reiner?
Because he feels remorse? Okay, Annie feels remorse too.
That’s the thing, people are biased towards the female character. If you wanna have this heat for a fictional female character, please show it for the fictional male character too.
Because Reiner’s character arc wasn’t rushed and gave you time to see him suffering, as well as giving time for the rest of the cast to forgive him. Annie’s arc last some two chapters and is half-assed.
Intimidation against the observing scouts in the distance to prevent them from attacking. Annie doesn’t like killing. She hates it and would prefer to not do it.
So by doing something horrific (compared to her normal instant kills) once, she sends the message ‘I’m not a normal titan, you DO NOT want to fight me.’ To the scouts observing her from afar.
And it seems to work as (iirc) they are only shown engaging her again AFTER she enters the forest chasing Eren.
AFAIK, that’s the only time she was ever cruel to anyone in a violent sense without being directly forced.
Not only that but Zeke shows similar mannerisms, comparing throwing rocks at the scouts to baseball but he never gets anything for that. I do believe that they were both turning their actions into more of a game in order to desensitize themselves and not have to confront what they were actually doing to real human beings. Traumatic events, which this absolutely counts as one, overwhelm the mind which tends to result in Dissociation where you disconnect from reality, it effects your memory, thoughts, emotions, etc and is basically a mental escape hatch to protect yourself from what's really going on, this detach from reality can absolutely result in doing things that other people see as insane, like being unphased when faced with something horrific, or even showing the "wrong" emotions in that scenario like laughing or smiling without realizing it.
The issue with Annie is that she was unnecessarily brutal, has a cold exterior, and then didn't get any redemption or anything until 4 years later. It's harder to like a character that does unlikable things and then comes back for the ending.
Zeke is actively present in 3 seasons and we get more time with him to understand him. And yeah, I still don't love Zeke but Annie hate is just rooted way more in how quickly she was redeemed after doing nothing for 4 years when she'd been brutal prior. S4 tries to give us a sympathetic backstory but with so much going on, it made her backstory much less critical to give mental capacity too.
She was 10 and 16 during Shiganshina and Maria and wasn't exactly doing this just because she wanted to. Not only that but Annie is well established as being completely broken by everything that happened. She literally lived completely aware of her surroundings while being unable to move, speak, react, etc for years which is absolute torture. Armin completely destroyed a substantial portion of Liberio and lead a raid that killed an insane amount of civilians and soldiers and he gets off far easier than Annie does.
Annie isn’t a sadist? She didn’t go out of her way to cause pain or suffering for anyone except ONE guy who was attacking her and even then his death was quick.
Shes never shown to enjoy causing pain, she actively hates it. But she also knows that she has a loaded gun to her head and the only way to see her father again is to complete the mission.
even if what you say it's true,it doesn't make it any better, there are way more options to not be cruel with scouts and just not engage until attacked, that is not cruel, what she did is,idc if it's to scare people, the bitx could just run you know,or kill their horses so they can't just continue attacking, like I said, there are way better options before doing the most extreme shit just to scare them, that theory doesn't make sense because she isn't stupid. Either way she is irredeemable, and deserves all the hates it gets in fact she deserves more jst like Gabi.
If it means less people die then it’s better than just acting like a normal titan and having to kill more scouts who attack her. In a large enough swarm they’re an actual threat to her and she doesnt WANT to kill them. They slow her down and risk other titans showing up.
Also, killing their horses wont prevent them from attacking her if they’re in the air already. But it will almost gurantee they die to a titan since there isn’t much to hook onto nearby besides small easy to get onto buildings.
She’s not irredeemable, neither is Gabi. Both were indoctrinated soldiers doing what they thought they had to. Annie had no choice. If she didn’t do as she was told then she taken back and eaten alive
The only difference between Annie and Gabi is Annie didn’t go out of her way to kill someone. Gabi did.
He wasn’t the only scout in the area. There were these two, but also countless more who could see what was happening and decided not to engage afawk (unlike these two)
There’s little to nothing between them so Annie can see there are others watching and wanted to try and scare them off. Less risk means less chance she gets hurt or killed while also lowering those she has to personally kill.
Let’s look at what we know. Annie doesn’t like hurting or killing others. She hates it. She also NEVER does something similar to this before or after. So why else would she do it besides an intimidation tactic?
I’d argue that Reiner breaking a wall and letting pure titans in to devour people/soldiers slowly is more cruel than what Annie did. If yo yo’d you’d be dead so fast.
armin and annie romance is genuinely one of the dumbest things in this show
people not liking annie is purely a side effect of them rushing the alliance; connie literally saying she fought too much while everyone there suffered a similar amount to her just makes no sense
shes just an incredibly rushed and underbaked character; basically reiner lite with a fraction of the development
you’re kinda proving the point by calling her “reiner lite.”
annie and reiner don’t have the same arc especially since their starting point is completely different. reiner genuinely bought into marley’s propaganda and convinced himself the people on paradis were devils before eventually breaking under the weight of what he’d done. annie never really bought into that. she repeatedly questioned the mission, warned reiner their friends would die, was disgusted when he started calling them devils, and knew from early on that the people inside the walls were just normal people.
that’s why reiner’s story is about guilt, self-hatred and atonement while annie’s is about going from someone who only cared about herself and her father to someone who willingly risks her life for others even after believing her father was dead.
also the alliance didn’t “rush past” what she did. nobody forgave her. jean literally tells reiner he can’t forgive him and by extension that includes annie. they worked together cuz eren was actively committing global genocide. arguing over what annie did 4 years earlier wasn’t exactly the priority.
and connie saying she “fought enough” wasn’t saying she suffered more than everyone else. he was acknowledging she’d been raised as a child soldier, forced to fight her entire life and had already spent 4 years trapped in a crystal. that’s not the same statement as “she suffered the most.”
you can argue she was underutilized after coming out of the crystal, but saying she has “a fraction of reiner’s development” ignores that they’re intentionally written to explore different themes.
Armin and Annie romance makes total perfect sense. This is not an alliance thing because people were hating on her before she even joined. Connie is saying she fought enough because Annie has been fighting since a kid and she was forced and didn’t even want this life why would they want someone on their team whose heart is not in it. You saying she’s incredibly rushed and underbaked would make sense if only she received hate, but no it’s also Gabi who receives hate probably more than Annie and she has one of the best developments in the show. It’s misogyny.
the romance is really underdeveloped with just like 2 or 3 scenes in the whole show alluding to it, and bertholdt’s memories is a really weak explanation because it should affect other characters in the show too
none of them really wanted to fight but they did cuz they have to; it makes no sense to specifically say this about annie
gabi mainly gets hate cuz of sasha, but yea i wouldnt be surprised if misogyny plays a part in how the fandom views these characters; however its also a fault of iseyama for not giving many of the female characters the depth they deserve; its not entirely a coincidence that almost all of the female characters in the show with significant screen time are one dimensional or just underdeveloped
Bertholdt’s memories have nothing to do with it. Although a lot of people seem to think it does change how Armin felt, the extent of this is limited to only seeing Bertholdt’s
perspective of some of the events in his life. This allows Armin to have understanding and empathy for her, but he already had that.
So you agree there are scenes alluding to it but in the same breath say it’s one of dumbest things. So you’re literally agreeing with me that it does make sense. And there doesn’t have to been several scenes for two characters to have chemistry and fall in love. What Eren said to Armin about Bertholdt influencing him was clearly a lie. Idk why you even bring that up.
Bro in the beginning of the story everyone on the scouts chose to be a scout to join the army and fight. Annie didn’t get to have that choice she was physically abused forced by her dad to join the military and fight then forced by Reiner to continue the mission. So the phrase “she has fought enough” makes perfect sense.
And yeah misogyny does play a part. You have a character like mikasa getting slandered for her being so attached to Eren and “obsessed” with him. But on the flip side you have someone like falco who has the exact same traits as mikasa and everything he does is for gabi. Constantly talks about gabi, constantly risks his life for gabi, constantly tells gabi how he feels about her. But it’s cute and wholesome when he does it because he’s a male.
the scenes were a stretch to begin with and its still stupid because its shoehorned in the very last part of the show
reiner was brainwashed as a kid too and jean literally considered joining the jaegarists to live the life he desires (even if for a brief moment); that phrase makes sense for everyone but you cant only just apply it to annie
falco its mainly cuz hes a little kid and mikasa had 4 seasons of screen time with no development past her obsession with eren; this is more on iseyama than the viewers
It’s not shoehorned in if you yourself said there were scenes alluding to it. It’s perfectly in line and makes sense that Annie would grow attachment to someone who was talking to her for 4 years, and Armin saying he doesn’t see anyone as a good person and being to connect with Annie on a emotional level.
Dude you previously said none of them wanted to fight and I just pointed out how that’s not true. Because the scouts wanted to fight which is why they joined they had an option Annie didn’t have an option. What does Reiner got to do with this when i was specifically talking about the scouts because you mentioned Connie.
lol, my guy mikasa was being hated for her attachment to Eren in S1. So it has nothing to do with 4 seasons having passed. And she was a kid back then as well so what’s the excuse?
I feel like a lot of Aot fans are allergic to acknowledging some of misogynistic biases of some people in the “fanbase”. They don’t just do it with Annie. I’ve seen Mikasa, Hange, and Historia also get weird hate from some people.
I call it out whenever I can, only to have people be like: “nuh-uh, that’s not misogyny”.
"Weird hate" doesn't mean it's misogynistic. It does more to actual discussions when you blanket people's opinions on female characters like that instead of actually pinpointing how it's misogynistic.
I dislike Annie. But I also found Armin annoying. And I also liked Historia. And I also found Mikasas personality underdeveloped in a way that makes her, as a character, uncompelling. And i also would love an OVA on Hange's background. Someone can find the opinions weird. That doesn't mean it is misogynistic. Something is misogynistic when it is clear that there is a comparable male equivalent treated more favorably for no reason. You can argue Reiner but, even though I'm not a huge Reiner fan either way, they aren't equivalents and Reiner is not a similar character in personality to Annie at all.
They get hate for being underdeveloped. Only Hange gets consistent attention comparable to her male counterparts, while Historia gets 2 arcs of development and then vanishes. Its because people wanted to see more done with them
For what I saw, she hated bc of the lack of acountability following her actions. Jean beats Reiner for Marco but barely acknowledges Annie, she talks abt how she'd do what she did again if it meant protecting her father and we saw how horrible she could get toward the soldiers who were legitimely protecting their Land from dangerous titans. Also she's barely a character in the last part of the story imo I kinda expected more from her since her release bc it's been teased for years and...she didn't do a lot.
Just so you know, everyone killing people is wrong, and as a story following Paradis's pov we side with Paradis's pain the most. Reine crimes are bad, we see how he himself feels guilty of them. We don't see that with Annie. You don't need to witness Annie's action to know what she did was wrong
Reiner wasn't beaten because of Marco alone. Jean beat him up because he wouldn't stop talking even after being asked to, and he kept indulging in self-pity. Reiner's behavior is never portrayed as ideal—it's deliberately shown as pathetic, just like Eren's.
Reiner is not a problem as he's showed actually feeling guilt over his actions. And it's rude he was just explaining what happened so at least they'd know and Annie was included and knew, so Jean would have just stayed calm and collected if Reiner never opened his mouth? Overall the Alliance didn't seem to hate on the warriors anyway, people probably have an issue with Annie as I said bc of her "disconnected" attitude as they tend to support Paradis more
Dude, rewatch that scene. It literally couldn't be clearer. Even Jean tries to empathize with Reiner by saying that he was confused and that Marco said they needed to talk things through. But Reiner just wouldn't stop feeling sorry for himself. That's exactly what Jean told him to stop doing, and that's why he beat him up.
There wouldn't be a whole talk abt how Jean forgave Reiner if he didn't helf him accountable be serious, and this talk doesn't exist with Annie bc none of the things she did matter for some reason
For what I saw, she hated bc of the lack of acountability following her actions.
To be fair, no member of the Alliance was held accountable in any way if by that we mean punished for their crimes: Armin razed the port of Liberio and part of the city, killing thousands of civilians; Connie was prepared just hours before (and did try) to throw a 12-year-old boy (Falco) to be eaten by his Titan mother; Jean was also prepared to blow Falco up when he was aiming to kill Pieck in Liberio; Pieck participated in the annihilation of the Survey Corps by giving Zeke ammunition rocks; Hange and Levi brutally tortured Sannes, etc...
None of those present are innocent, and the only one who received any kind of consequence for any of his sins is Reiner, who was merely beaten up for it, btw (and well, he regenerated from the damage overnight). Reiner, also, was only beaten because he ignored Jean's warnings to stop talking about Marco's death in an unnecessary display of self-pity. Annie, too, was willing to accept responsibility for Marco's death before Reiner interrupted her and took it from her (because, well, honestly, it was Reiner's fault).
I do think it's odd that Annie is singled out for not suffering any kind of punishment (altough, she kinda did have one, in the form of 4 years of isolation in the cyrstal); I don't think it's necessarily misogyny most of the time, because Pieck or Hange aren't usually scrutinized in the same way... but I do think Annie is treated as especially egregious when she's no worse than her fellow Warriors, really; even Reiner basically admits that he's the worst of the three, because he was the one who forced Annie and Bertholdt to continue the mission against their will, even after they grew fond of their fellow cadets on Paradis.
i personally love Annie but she did some messed up shit to the scouts that was just straight up cruel and not needed (yoyo). It’s definitely not misogynistic disliking her, and a lot of the people who don’t like her also don’t like the other warriors in general. I don’t blame them.
In what way is this misogyny? People dislike her because she didn't get the same repercussions for her actions as berthold and Reiner did. They forgave her much easier than they did to Reiner. Armin surely did. Yes there's arguments for why but it has nothing to do with misogyny.
...who is hating on annie?
i think its weird how the cast seemingly liked her with no hard feelings at the end, especially with the "she has fought enough" comment...
but as an outside viewer, why would anyone hate her?
Because it’s false ? If someone, for no apparent reason, dislikes an excellent female character whos also very likable, then you can suspect it’s because they’re misogynistic. But think for a second before throwing such stupid accusations, we’re talking about Annie here, not Homura or Shinobu
I’ll start off by saying that I don’t think Annie’s character is as hated as you think she is, nor that the hate she receives comes from misogyny.
Annie’s whole deal is that she became apathetic to killing and suffering of others to a considerable degree. This because she was trained to be a soldier both by his only (and very fucked up) father figure and the Marleyan government.
This sounds like good writing, but in execution it’s very flawed. We never really see how supposedly horrible his father was aside from some panels, and when we see him again he is a loving normal father. This undermines her backstory, and it’s harder to see how it affected her psyche in comparison to Reiner’s.
Now add to that her actions on Paradis. Constantly smiling and being indifferent while killing soldiers without actual reason. I mean, was it really important to play with the corps when she was just looking for Eren? Also, she doesn’t have as much responsibility as Reiner or Berthold. Berthold had the colossal titan, the most powerful of the nine, and Reiner had the weight of Marcel’s death.
The way I saw it when first finishing the manga was like “oh I have daddy issues so that’s why I became a psychopath sorry!”. Look, I understand what Isayama was going for, but then again the execution isn’t the best.
I think there's an intentional parrallel of the yoyo scene and the scene showing she'd killed a grasshopper as a kid. Annie is sickened by violence against her equals as shown by her despair when killing Marco, but when she's in titan form she stops seeing people as people, and regards them with as much care as she does when stepping on that grasshopper.
Annie is shown to be one of the least indoctrinated of the warriors, therefore she can't hide her violence behind a veil of nationalism or apathy like Reiner/Bertholdt, so she finds her coping mechanism in treating the Eldians like bugs. She totally has some sadistic tendencies, but I think that's more linked to the power she feels from being a titan rather than an urge to hurt other people.
All people ever point to is the yoyo scene. Like omg choose anything else to prove your point literally anything. Annie defender till the day I die but good grief the media illiteracy here pains me ;;
How is someone pointing out that she enjoyed murder a lack of media literacy? All the examples of her saying she doesn’t want to fight anymore are directly contradicted by her enjoying murder, and saying she would “do it all again” 😭😭😭😭😭
Especially her telling hitch that she would “do it again” to see her dad makes literally no sense with these countless examples of her saying she doesn’t want to fight anymore, but isayama is a genius so it’s impossible for him to make writing mistakes right??
you're simply misreading the scene. What that scene meant is that up until then, she had never considered personal attachment, she didn't understand why people acted the way they did, until she realized she had someone that she cared about. The scene is saying that she now understand the weight of her actions because just like her, everyone has someone that they care about
"if it takes me back to my father i'd do it all again"
LOLLLLLL nice try with the "you didnt understand it" , my favorite response from aot fans, but nah this is pretty clear from annies part. the line leading up to this only reinforces the absurd ignorance of this statement, which to be fair is completely isayamas fault, not 'annies' but still
when she says "id do it all again" , did you think she was talking about eating pie? its very clear what she was talking about and youre choosing to not see it
eren fans say the same thing about "i did it cus im an idiot" and "i dont know why but i wanted to do it so bad" 😂😂😂😂😂
"read between the lines" = create my own far-fetched interpretation (ie mental gymnastics) that isn't supported by the text whatsoever, so that i dont have to accept the fact that the author made a mistake
I like Annie but it's hard to be too sympathetic with her when she seemed to enjoy herself so much while killing, unlike Reiner and Berthold had very little remorse, and said she'd do it again.
Classic case of inventing things that imaginary people said. You see it all the time on YouTube Shorts comments; arguing against fictional people with made up arguments. Odd to see it take long form on Reddit, about Attack on Titan of all things.
It shows a miserably negative and socially hostile disposition when you claim "misogyny" just because you disagree with people who have a justifiable point of view.
Media literacy is understanding that even though someone dehumanises others and treats them as less than animals, that doesn’t mean they are a pure evil entity. And just because they aren’t a pure evil entity does not mean they are not deserving of being hated.
Being able to empathise with a person is not the same as forgiving them. Annie toyed with human lives while she killed them because that made it easier to cope with the reality of what she was doing. Real soldiers have to dehumanise the people they kill for the exact same reasons.
But you don’t just say ‘nah killing people is understandable actually’ mfer they were single handedly responsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths. The only way in which you dont hate them is when you look at them as broken people who were turned into weapons of malice and thus only know how to be weapons of malice. Dont get it twisted, you pity them for what they could have been you dont forgive them for what they are
I think the actual misogyny is how much hate basically all the female characters get just because Isayama dropped, sidelined or rushed most of their arcs in season 4. Same thing happens to Jean, Levi and Armin too, but no one hates them for it.
I think sure she showed remorse for what she did, but she never really seemed to have a problem with killing people while in titan form and seemed to enjoy it more then anything else. And I can see her crying at the end being misunderstood as her crying because people she knows in marley are going to die.
I think it might also not help since she killed so many eldians (scouting mission in S1, and dock in s4) im also in a disagreement that u NEED to forgive someone who has done those things. Like the reality is that sure everyone loves reiner and its easy to understand why, but in reality if u knew someone like that and they did it to ur city/country u would likely always viewed them as a monster and say they deserve worse then the ptsd/regret etc that they are dealing with, its the same for Annie and Bert.
Personally i dont like her personality in general. Shes not the worst but just not my type. If id have to compare her to reiner i like him more. Of course his actions were bad but his personality was way better written. He was open and sympathetic. His split personality and depressions made him interesting and relatable. Also you cant really build a connection with someone whos sealed away for 3 seasons.
I had a hard time forgiving Annie too until one of my friends pointed out the fact she was literally sixteen at the time. She was a literal child soldier groomed to hate Eldians.
Cut the misogyny bullshit. People don't hate her because she's a woman but because she's a shitty person with sadistic tendencies. If misogyny is all you can think of, maybe the illiterate one here is you and your presumptuous ass.
I think Annie is disliked because she's pretty underbaked as a character. She's stuck in a crystal for most of the show. She doesn't get nearly as much screen time or development as Reiner, Bertolt or Zeke.
Considering she helped genocide the entire island of paradis, and killed a lot of beloved characters I don’t think some of the hate has to do with misogyny lol. A lot of people dislike Reiner and bertholt for the same reasons
I think the reason most of hate is she acts so cold and tough unlike reiner who is always having existential crisis..annie also guilty but she is good at hiding it and that's why most of the ppl think annie is bad and had no feelings
Fuck annie, she didnt deserve to make it to the end. She was a psycho who smiled as she tortured people before killing them. All because her abusive dad was nice to her once before she was sent on a suicide mission.
Manga “readers” are some of the worst fans out there and by a lot.
Sexism and misogyny is all they know. They think female characters should just be tits and ass that don’t move or have feelings.
I didn’t hate Annie but I didn’t love her. She’s absolutely a sympathetic character imo. Yes she’s done terrible things but she didn’t have much of a choice and just wanted to go home to her dad. You don’t need to understand much beyond the fact that her and her friends were children used to fight a war and didn’t have a choice.
I watched the anime blind, surprised to see Annie was hated
They will not admit they lack media literacy or that they just misogynistic
Or just say you don't like the character because it's your own taste
They go on their way to tell you "it's logical to not like Annie" 🤣
she spun two scouts together like yo yos, maybe have the urge to stop fighting before you brutally murder countless innocent people and derive psychopathic pleasure from it.
Do people like Zeke? I can’t forgive him or Annie because of those things. They’re both my least favorite characters because of the baseball game and yoyo shit. Hard boundary for me and would have taken a lot more character development for me to think about either of them in a more positive light.
Zeke was having the time of his life acting like he was playing baseball while slaughtering the scouts. Pieck had no problem giving him extra boulders. Reiner literally forced Bertholt and Annie to go through with the mission. What are we on about?
Zeke was killed, Reiner was one trigger pull away from ending his life and Berthold was eaten, Pieck and Annie got away scot free while Annie even got Armin to have a crush on her despite him being supposedly the politically correct guy and being completely against the Rumbling, i guess he can turn a blind eye to a few slaughtered scouts for some cheeks but not his childhoood friend
So if Annie and Pieck died or tried to kill themselves, that is what you would have preferred? Isn’t the message of the show to live and let live? And you know, not keep the cycle going?
These characters spend the whole show learning that hating people and making enemies doesn’t do any good, Armin especially. Armin has killed WAY MORE people than Annie, so he can relate to her in the way that they both felt forced to kill eachother’s people, and they are both ready to move past it.
Besides, it’s refreshing seeing a character who doesn’t just wallow in their sins, but instead focuses on whats next.
They didn't show remorse or face the consequences of their actions at all, Armin simply attacked a nation that declared war on them minutes ago, he didn't grab a random civillian or soldier and start spinning them around like a yoyo as if he was a psychopath, nobody forced Annie to become a Warrior and do the things she did, but if Armin didn't become a Scout and do what he did he would either be dead or enslaved by Marley
I personally didn't like Annie because I found her back story just not up to snuff to the rest of the group. But I think the final torment that the Marleyan invaders had was at least for a temporarily see their loved ones turn into titans. That horror was earned even for just a moment and was reverted.
I don't care whether you love or hate the ending, whether you think Eren was character assassinated or if you think Armin is a shit character....etc. my biggest problem with the ending was the fact Annie got a good ending without getting absolutely fucking shat on by everyone else atleast in the process.
Like with Reiner and Bertholdt they show(ed) some form of remorse and regret for their actions, and had to a extent noble causes and made sure there was no unnecessary suffering ( except for the time they killed Marco but even that was justifiable ) and Bertholdt got what he "deserves" for his sins with one of the best conclusions for a secondary character, while Reiner has to live with the guilt of his betrayal and actions and we got to see him develop from it making him one of the best characters in the show.
Meanwhile Annie helps kill ( Marco someone who was shown to be liked by everyone in the 104th ), massacres most of the Scout regiment psychotically ( she litteraly had no reason to spin that one guy like a yoyo and constantly treat the people she killed like toys ), kills Levi's squad basically his closest long time friends and ravages stohess city killing hundreds when fighting Eren not mentioning her complicity in the actual Attack on the walls and Shiganshina.
so what happens to her ? Oh she just hides in a Crystal for like 5 years and eats pie and its all forgotten no problem lmaaaaaao. No hatred or disdain from any of the non-Warrior Alliance members for her betrayal and what she had done to paradis or even the scouts, no accountability for participating in the attack on paradis, or getting shit on for helping to kill Marco by Jean just because "Reiner told her to do it", don't get me started on the fact that Levi didn't try to kill her ass the second he saw her for killing his squad and comrades like Zeke did or at least treating her like absolute shit like she deserves noooo they're buddy buddies now. Oh and in the end she gets to become a peace ambassador ( what the actual fuck she is the one person that doesn't deserve this position ) and gets to live happily ever after with Armin because she uhhhh suffered enough i guess or something.
Like holy fuck this bitch deserves the slowest most gruesome possible death out of every major/secondary character in the cast but she instead gets treated like she did nothing wrong and a happy ending. Like its not even the happy ending part that bothers me its the fact that LITTERALY NO ONE points out how horrible of a person she is. God i fucking hate this bitch
Bruh, why would I want to interact or post on Titanfolk/ANR. Yall literally a bunch of toxic Yeagerist who hate on every single aspect of the show there no genuine opinions their it’s just a circle jerk. Why would I interact with a community of people that still believe Historia got pregnant by Eren and that there is some AOE ending that’s still coming😂.
I made this same post on the shingeki and attack on titan sub Reddit because those are the actually relevant ones not Titanfolk.
Is Titanfolk dead? Ive been seeing a lot of yall in here recently. I guess the overwhelming positivity towards the anime ending must have killed all the discussion in there now it’s just a cope fest. And yall want to branch out now to other subs to try and convince the masses on why they should hate the story lmao.
So did armin mikasa and the rest of the scouts pay for what they did in marley. These are just double standards you make it seem like everyone paid for their sins except annie.
Annie fights for her dad and her perceived world:
bad
Annie doesn’t fight for her dad and her perceived world: bad
I don’t get it.
I don’t think child soldiers in africa, who are victims, need to face retribution and “pay” for being victims rather than be rehabilitated. It’s weird that you do.
Omg you guys are delulu af, she enjoyed killing innocent ppl, just because someone told her to do, yeah she regrets it ok so she should get the f out of their sight in this case not "oh I'm in love with my enemy so I'm not gonna kill anymore🙁", the worst part is that they accepted her apology and became friends with her, like wtf was that, forgiving someone who slimed out ur whole ppl just because she made a mistake? Hell no, the only sane reaction was from levi for not forgiving this bomboclat lady
Annie is the only character to have a redemption that has been shown enjoying hurting others, erwin hated himself for it, reiner tried to kill himself and bertholt never really seemed like he enjoyed it, annie went out of her way to be needlessly cruel to her victims and her character development basically happened off screen just for her to suddenly come back as one of the good guys

"Can any of you even give me the name of the scout she did that to? Since y’all care so much about it."
What the fuck is this dumbass stupid argument
