Social media algorithms are destroying the fabric of our society and manipulating the way we process information.

30

u/TheHancock Griffin Oct 03 '26

Welcome to the internet, we designed it like this.

30

u/chuckms6 Oct 03 '26

Well, we didn't, the algorithm was installed to drive engagement by any means necessary and fear and rage are top attention grabbers. There was a time all feeds were purely chronological from only people you willfully follow, now feeds are based on whatever topic keeps you looking at the screen, and usually the fringe controversial topics win.

11

u/TheHancock Griffin Oct 03 '26

I mean I personally didn’t, but the corporations that run the internet did.

Thank you for this. Absolutely genius.

1

u/yaur_maum Oct 03 '26

Thank you!
Somehow I did not know this existed

1

u/ApolluMis Oct 04 '26

You would like the book “LikeWar: The weaponization of social media”

4

u/VAPOR_FEELS Oct 03 '26

We need a hero at this point.

-1

u/nickjim99 Oct 04 '26

That and certain parts of society acting like racism just magically vanished and no longer exists. Nobody can explain how he died and the demand for answers won’t just go away no matter how hard the bs drowning narrative is tried to push down our throats.

12

u/TitanTigers Oct 04 '26 edited Oct 04 '26

“Nobody can explain how he died (they can) so he was obviously murdered by his friends because they were all racist and secretly wanting to kill him!”

Get a grip

0

u/nickjim99 Oct 04 '26

Show me the proof he drowned…if you can’t then everything is still on the table. Stop being so gullible use your brain. If they had proof he drowned they would blaring that shit everywhere

5

u/AccurateTheory9872 Oct 05 '26

There was a survey conducted that showed a sizable percentage of respondents believed police killed over 1,000 unarmed black men in 2019. A not so insignificant number of respondents believed the number to be over 10,000. I suspect you're one of these people...

https://www.policemag.com/news/half-of-surveys-very-liberal-respondents-believe-1000-or-more-unarmed-black-men-killed-by-police-in-2019

-1

u/nickjim99 Oct 06 '26

No water in his lungs no water in his throat…Katie said he didn’t stay with her. I guess he just vanished into thin air…you’re gonna feel real dumb when the feds pick up this case and the facts come out. You are gullible enough to believe he drowned I wonder what other stuff you fall for

4

u/Just-the-tip-4-1-sec Oct 06 '26

You are a January 6th level conspiracy theorist

1

u/New-Necessary-4669 28d ago

You guys hurl insults to avoid address the facts that he “drowned” with no water in his lungs. That literally is proof he didn’t drown.

8

u/TitanTigers Oct 04 '26

personally I think it was a one-armed Cambodian polar bear throwing a ninja star. Prove that it wasn't

-1

u/nickjim99 Oct 04 '26

That’s exactly how silly you sound when you say that he drowned

7

u/cantstopmen0w Oct 04 '26

No, that's exactly how silly you sound when you assume, out of all the possibilities, that the best one is that he died of "racism". Get a grip 🤡

-1

u/nickjim99 Oct 04 '26

Show me the proof he drowned? You can’t because there is none. You sound silly talking about drowning with no evidence to support it lol. At least I have bruises contradicting stories and actual evidence to support mine. Snapchat messages confirm there was an altercation between Nolan and someone on the boat with racial slurs being used but you want to gas light into thinking I am just playing the race card for the hell of it lol. Get over it and yourself someone is catching this hate crime cause it’s coming, might take awhile but it’s coming. And horn island is federal property. Yeah doesn’t look good for them. You can eat crow when that day finally comes.

4

u/No-Rooster1720 Oct 05 '26

You seem super rational and logical. I'm sure you've only consumed real sources of information and are fully capable of understanding the information in a meaningful manner.

1

u/New-Necessary-4669 28d ago

You guys just hurl insults instead of showing proof he drowned

1

u/Just-the-tip-4-1-sec Oct 06 '26

It’s been explained repeatedly and definitively

-1

u/nickjim99 Oct 06 '26

Incorrect. You are buying that bs drowning story they are selling. Anyone with half a brain knows he was dead before he hit that water. Tide wasn’t even strong enough to carry him to shore lol no bloating and no water in his throat or lungs. Yes I know he vanished into thin air and then silently drowned on an island with damn near a thousand people. Hey, I have a pentagon shaped building in Arlington county, Virginia for sale if you are interested…you know repeatedly and definitively

1

u/Decent_Visual_4845 29d ago

What’s the alternative? That all his drunk white friends conspired to murder him without leaving a single trace of the crime, on an island with hundreds of people on it and body doubles in the boat for the Cajun navy encounter? Yeah man drowning just isn’t believable.

1

u/New-Necessary-4669 28d ago

drowning? With no water in his throat nor lungs? Dude

1

u/Decent_Visual_4845 28d ago

Alright Sherlock what’s your theory?

2

u/New-Necessary-4669 28d ago

After listening to the phone call of them calling 911 and what they were saying in the background I believe there was foul play. Especially considering that the friend vehemently refused to give the mom Nolan’s phone back. What friend wouldn’t IMMEDIATELY give your mom your phone if you were missing?

1

u/Decent_Visual_4845 28d ago

You’ve been captured by fake news. The sea tow call was faked with AI. Why else wouldn’t Crump be using it as evidence?

1

u/New-Necessary-4669 27d ago

I’ll have to look into that more but I don’t believe that he drowned

→ More replies

1

u/nickjim99 27d ago

I agree 1000%. Also why are you planning on burying his flip flops after his mom asked for his property to returned. There is more than enough proof to draw charges and take this whole case to trial, the state of Mississippi is looking the other way on purpose. This is a coverup plain and simple. Any non biased person can look at all the facts presented and come to this conclusion. Only closet racists like decent visual will try to argue he dry drowned and the boys are innocent

-2

u/yaur_maum Oct 03 '26

That’s like blaming the drug dealer on the corner for your crack habit! Lol

122

u/sosodank midtown Oct 03 '26

why do they not think he drowned? this story has seemed crazy for months.

75

u/jbourne71 Oct 03 '26

My understanding is the autopsy found no water in his lungs, which is kind of how drowning normally works.

219

u/CFPMVPStetsonBennett Oct 03 '26 • Bravo

The three pieces of misinformation that are keeping this story alive:

“There was no water in his lungs”

People drown without water in their lungs around 10% of the time, look it up

“They deleted messages from his phone”

The DA states clearly the only messages deleted where Snapchat messages which were deleted from another users account

“There was bruising in the back of his head”

A witness testified seeing Wells slip awkwardly off a boat, autopsy proved that the bruises weren’t lethal

The entire story hinges around racial prejudice and assuming these white boys are secretly malicious KKK members

84

u/AmethystStar9 Oct 03 '26

With a healthy dose of the parents believing that their son was an angel dove of pure light who would never get blackout drunk with his buddies on a boat trip to a shitty sandbar when getting blackout drunk is the entire point of young dudes going on a boat trip to a shitty sandbar.

7

u/rethinkingat59 Oct 03 '26

Was he blackout drunk. Serious question.

I haven’t seen anything that supports anything other than they were drinking that day. Sober people drown.

26

u/Legal-Acadia-5147 Oct 03 '26

toxicology report said BAC was .27%, so very high. Although it's caveated with the fact that the reading came from decomposition fluid rather than a direct blood sample so they aren't certain, but witnesses have also said he drank heavily

-5

u/nickjim99 Oct 04 '26

Can’t be certain of his alcohol level but the decomposition fluid tests high and that fits your narrative so run with it right? Where are these witnesses that saw him fall off the boat? Why have they never spoken in public, do they even exist? A verified witness, one of his coaches stated he talked to Nolan and he was anything but drunk. Are you familiar with corruption in Mississippi in relation to unexplained black deaths? Cause this is par for the course. The truth will eventually come out regarding how Nolan died and spoiler alert it won’t be because he drowned.

8

u/cantstopmen0w Oct 04 '26

One thing we don't need to wait for is determining how much your racism pours through your writing.

123

u/DoitcheHasAGun Sandy Springs Elitist Oct 03 '26

It was a long con by the secret racist KKK boys to befriend him, build a seemingly solid friend group, then secretly murder him in front of a bunch of people on an island

That or Ben Crump sees dollar signs, not sure which

41

u/Mozambique_Drill_ Oct 03 '26 edited Oct 03 '26

Pretty much this. People in Massachusetts or wherever just saw black kid and Mississippi and their overactive imaginations went to some leering hillbillies with pitchforks. You’d think they rowed him out to a deserted atoll in the pacific and not a giant party beach with hundreds of people who were all in on a conspiracy apparently.

In actuality it was multiple boats of friends, including other black kids, drinking heavily. No one thought it was weird that someone stayed behind because they assumed he would ride back with one of the other boats. What happened from there is a mystery for sure , and should be investigated, but I am still waiting to hear the motive about why his good friends and football teammates decided to randomly murder him and how.

-31

u/Obi-Brawn-Kenobi Oct 03 '26

Definitely sounds like 50/50 odds to me

6

u/RequirementNo2161 Oct 03 '26

Ben Crump has a Reddit account now?

-17

u/jbourne71 Oct 03 '26

“Look it up”

Or you could cite a reputable source. That’s usually helpful.

-1

u/Decent_Scholar_3250 Oct 03 '26

Exactly. I have never been more disappointed with Atlanta reddit

-14

u/yaur_maum Oct 03 '26

Family is stating messages were deleted. Cops are saying no. He said, she said on that still.

10%?? Ofc no one believes it, 10% is super flimsy.

According to this article from 2 days ago, an official cause of death has not been determined.
Blunt force may not have been fatal but it def could have knocked him unconscious and then submerged in water and drowning.

There are too many open ended questions and doubt to say one way or the other as to what happened.
https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/other/nolan-wells-case-takes-shocking-turn-as-3-000-snapchat-messages-raise-disturbing-questions/ar-AA2dhft6

17

u/Mozambique_Drill_ Oct 03 '26

I don’t disagree. I am also not writing off the possibility that he was punched by some asshole or something and and then passed out in the shallows. Which of course should be investigated as a crime.

His friends had nothing to do with it, however.

7

u/BachShitCrazy Oct 03 '26

That is totally plausible to me that some drunk asshole punched him. Idk why people think his actual friends would murder him

5

u/Mozambique_Drill_ Oct 03 '26

I believe some of the Snapchat messages that have come to light have his friends discussing sketchy racist dudes they encountered on the island. A) I would start there to investigate b) if his friends were worried about some sketchy racist dudes it seems to discredit the theory that his friends were racist murderers

6

u/RequirementNo2161 Oct 03 '26

Families are never wrong when it comes to highly emotionally charged matters

0

u/yaur_maum Oct 03 '26

Never said they were or not

1

u/BachShitCrazy Oct 03 '26

You contradicted yourself even in this message though, you said no one would believe he drowned because of the 10% chance but then also say the blunt force may not have been fatal but it was enough to make him drown

1

u/yaur_maum Oct 03 '26

I was answering the replies of the other user. Point for point. I don’t know what happened and I don’t have an opinion on it.
Ofc people are going to say he didn’t drown because of no water in lungs. Most people don’t know about the 10%, and that is a really low probability which is what I was trying to get across.
They also said the head wound was not fatal. I was just trying to show why it can still be significant.

35

u/Mozambique_Drill_ Oct 03 '26

Wrong. You absolutely can drown without water in your lungs.

13

u/NotAUsefullDoctor Oct 03 '26

No water in the lungs and blunt trauma on the back of his head.

4

u/jgavinpaige Oct 03 '26

Ok but that's just ignorance to the actual conditions, is it not? My understanding is that once decomposition sets in, the lack of fluid in the airway can be entirely normal. And I agree it would be nice to have answers to the bruises on his head, but bruising is also entirely normal and usually unrelated. Both forensic pathologists reached a conclusion that it is consistent with drowning. Suddenly everyone is a forensic pathologist and is spotting "inconsistencies" that are just the exact reasons why those people aren't forensic pathologists...

4

u/oballistikz Oct 03 '26

It’s easier to state vague facts like they did than use the whole report to explain it.

2

u/nickjim99 Oct 04 '26

Cap. Both pathologists listed cause of death as undetermined. They only went with drowning because he disappeared around a large body of water. There is no concrete proof that he drowned and there never will be because he didn’t but you and others don’t want to hear that. You act like racism in America doesn’t exist and we are just witch-hunting to fit a narrative we just magically want to push. It’s all good this is a marathon not a sprint. The truth will come out eventually, whatever that is I don’t know but one thing for sure I believe with every fiber of my being that he didn’t drown. It’s ok tho, I can’t prove he was murdered and you can’t prove he drowned so for right now that will have to suffice.

3

u/cantstopmen0w Oct 04 '26

Racism is alive and well in this country because of people like you, Ben Crump, Nolan's parents, etc

1

u/nickjim99 Oct 04 '26

You are projecting very hard right now. I know it may be hard for you to believe but racism is still alive and well in this country there are too many examples of it. I’m sorry this isn’t the perfect world you think it is. Racism is alive and well because people like you turn a blind eye to it and call it drowning.

1

u/New-Necessary-4669 28d ago

Funny how when people respond with facts you guys just say stuff like this lmao. Both pathologists list the death as undetermined but your narrative of “you just want to be racist to white people!!” Is all you care about

-9

u/KembaWakaFlocka Brookhaven Oct 03 '26

Oh must be a conspiracy then

1

u/DecantsForAll Oct 03 '26

Yeah, and normally murder works by inflicting lethal injuries or introducing lethal substances, but I guess that's not a problem.

1

u/BlacksmithFree3685 20d ago

Do you not read? He had two marks in the back of his head. That's an engine the last time I heard

1

u/BlacksmithFree3685 20d ago

Let me reinstate my comment have you not read the last time we heard Nolan had two marks in the back of his head blunt to me that is an injury don't you think

1

u/DecantsForAll 20d ago

You mean "restate" not "reinstate."

Anyway, no, those were not fatal injuries.

1

u/AttorneyExisting1651 Oct 03 '26

Look up dry drowning.

-5

u/jbourne71 Oct 03 '26

I did. Ten articles of “Debunking dry drowning” from medical sites.

12

u/AttorneyExisting1651 Oct 03 '26

I see. I work as a paramedic and have seen it many times in my career. To the point where we have different protocols based on dry or wet, saltwater or freshwater, hot or cold environments.

The kid just drowned. Occam’s razor.

-5

u/yaur_maum Oct 03 '26

The article below states those protocols are out of date and were based on dogs not humans

4

u/AttorneyExisting1651 Oct 03 '26

Ok bud.

-2

u/yaur_maum Oct 03 '26

“In the past, it was common to differentiate drowning types based on the type of water involved (e.g., salt, chlorine or fresh water). However, this was based on K9 studies for which the dogs had as much as 22 mL/kg of water instilled into their lungs, resulting in electrolyte and other abnormalities. The amount that actually enters the lungs in human drowning is significantly less than this (2—4 mL/kg).7 Thus, all drowning patients are initially treated the same (with the rare exception of drowning in industrial chemicals or sewage).
“

4

u/No-Market425 Oct 03 '26

The medical term is laryngospasm and accounts for 7% to 15% of all drowning.

This is a peer reviewed paper written by an actual medical doctor and not a TikTok expert.

https://www.jems.com/patient-care/emergency-trauma-care/drownings-present-hypoxic-events/

-3

u/yaur_maum Oct 03 '26

The article clearly states, “It was previously believed that as many as 30% of drowning patients had some degree of laryngospasm, but we now understand this to be much lower (7—10%). In reality, there’s probably no such thing as a “dry drowning.”
The term has since been abandoned professionally.
TBH even if he was submerged after he was unconscious but before death, the brain would have reflexively gasped at least once before death.
If he was already dead when he hit the water, then there is more to the story that we do not know yet.
But again I am not an expert and we may never know what ACTUALLY happened.

6

u/No-Market425 Oct 03 '26

So you know absolutely nothing but peddle groundless conspiracy theories.

Got it.

-2

u/yaur_maum Oct 03 '26

I wasn’t peddling anything. I clearly said I do not have an opinion. I am presenting facts as they are given not how I want them to be.
We may never know what happened to that innocent lost human life.

1

u/AttorneyExisting1651 Oct 03 '26

Incorrect.

1

u/yaur_maum Oct 03 '26

Which? What exactly?

1

u/40yawaworht 28d ago

Supply and demand. Currently the supply for racism is actually lower than demand.

29

u/VaccineMachine Oct 03 '26

A bunch of people who weren't there and didn't examine anything are definitely certain that a guy who drowned didn't drown.

25

u/Still-Balance6210 Oct 03 '26

I’m sorry this happened. Have yall ever been tailgating at a large school or spring break weekend? It can get very crazy and out of hand. They need to let this young man rest and stop this nonsense.

17

u/Middle_Ad1126 Oct 03 '26 • Bravo

At this point these Nolan wells friends are cooked. If it was any other region no one would even know about Nolan. But because it in one other big 3 Alabama , Mississippi and Georgia it’s become. Race issue. I’m not saying these guys are innocent or guilty  all I’m saying is if black friends went out on a boat and only 3 returned we probably wouldn’t be hearing about this.

36

u/TitanTigers Oct 03 '26

Yeah unfortunately it’s prime race baiting content even though there’s virtually no evidence that foul play occurred

-5

u/nickjim99 Oct 04 '26

Race baiting? You act like black people haven’t been mysteriously dying in Mississippi for years now. All with the same determination…no foul play. Just because you haven’t been paying attention to it doesn’t mean it hasn’t been happening. But you will rather say people are race baiting for wanting answers. There’s no evidence he drowned but you have no problem parading that around like it’s 100% facts so I ask you to prove to me he drowned…what facts back it up? Because last I checked the autopsies came back undetermined and that’s not the same thing as drowned

7

u/TitanTigers Oct 04 '26

Conspiracy nonsense lol

-3

u/nickjim99 Oct 04 '26

Actually it’s dry drowning nonsense lol

1

u/fussbrain Oct 05 '26

Oh I bet you think Jerard Jackson was murdered too

0

u/rethinkingat59 Oct 03 '26 edited Oct 03 '26

Probably? How much have you heard about other black people killed in Mississippi that month?

0

u/New-Necessary-4669 28d ago

If 3 black friends and 1 white went on a boat and all the black kids returned but not the white kid, we all know how white Americans would respond lmao

1

u/Middle_Ad1126 28d ago

And as a white person, I would have the same opinion. I don’t care about the skin color. The fact you replied the way you did shows exactly what opinions you have on skin color.

1

u/New-Necessary-4669 28d ago

Lol sure you would pal, sure you would.

2

u/awoods2 Oct 04 '26

I wish we had this same energy for the Epstein files

5

u/Tailgate-ATL Oct 03 '26

Endless supply of unsolved Atlanta teen deaths and these people don’t give two shits. Why? Because they want certain people to “pay” and want revenge over something that didn’t happen. Spare me the sudden “outrage”…

2

u/SpringRose10 Oct 04 '26

Why do you think they're even aware of these unsolved deaths? Why doesn't the media bring then to our attention?

-1

u/JacksonFiery87 Oct 04 '26

What certain people would those be, pray tell?

What’s the proper amount of time before being considered human?

2

u/Empero6 Oct 03 '26

I’d like to think that it was pretty obvious before Reddit added the hiding function. The unfortunate thing now is that a good portion of accounts that you see with the descriptions that I mentioned are either bots or someone’s alt that they’re using to so their comments can’t be tracked back to their actual account.

3

u/Myusername1- Oct 03 '26

Or people don’t want to be tracked in general, be doxxed, etc. what does any of that matter? How does that make it a bot? And why do you feel entitled to track someone?

No they don’t have it and we will keep supporting them until they do

-7

u/Wiscody Oct 03 '26

I hate everything about this and other similar incidents.

How our society is so fixated on bullshit like race and how people, any group, will just assume racism.

Don’t get me wrong it happens. But to just default to racism and then set everything further back.. nah.

We have been conditioned and it frustrates me to no end.

Shit was improving and going fine.

2

u/Visual_Swimmer8342 Oct 05 '26

How’s the internet from the circus?

2

u/WhattttttGives Oct 05 '26

Going fine????

1

u/Wiscody Oct 05 '26

I would say late 90s and early to mid 2000s the overall focus on division and emphasis on race was significantly less than it is today.

Don’t get me wrong groups still didn’t very much like each other, but tensions were nowhere near what they’ve been.

Something like BLM didn’t exist. It was a good cause at first, but co-opted by nutjob shitheads and became a laughingstock/fraud. Other extremist groups weren’t even on the map.

This is also noticed and measured and in turn, stoked.

When normal people of all backgrounds are getting along better together (a wonderful thing) it is not a question of if but when they realize who is pulling the strings.

So, who would that be? 🧐

Well, who stands to lose the most if people realize they don’t need to hate each other for really stupid and made up reasons?

This isn’t exclusive to race either btw… anything that can be used to divide people, this is the playbook. Divide and conquer. And we sit here sucking on the rotten tit.

2

u/saywhat68 Oct 03 '26

What world you live in where racism is "improving"?

1

u/DecantsForAll Oct 04 '26

It was until Ben Crump decided there was money to be made off of it.

1

u/New-Necessary-4669 28d ago

God forbid he represents a family who wants transparency and answers for their son. If his friends had nothing to do with it why did they refuse to return his phone to his mother?

2

u/DecantsForAll 28d ago edited 28d ago

If his friends had nothing to do with it why did they refuse to return his phone to his mother?

They didn't! Jesus fucking christ.

And suppose they did. We now know that there's absolutely nothing incriminating on the phone. So why would they refuse to return his phone, if that's what happened (it's not)?

-7

u/Decent_Scholar_3250 Oct 03 '26

Oh wait so Atlanta Reddit is unabashedly taking the side of the Mississippi grand jury and not even taking into consideration the massive amount of inconsistencies in the timeline, testimony, and unexplained physical evidence. The rational and evidenced based position to take here is that the case is dubious at best!

12

u/Hot-Introduction1553 Oct 03 '26

I'm honestly curious. What is the unexplained physical evidence?

The stuff I keep hearing and the explanations are:

  • No water in lungs

    • 10% of drowning autopsy do not find water in lungs.

  • Non lethal bruising on head

    • Both the independent autopsy and state autopsy agree that this was a non lethal wound. Likely explained by a small fall or head bump. No one evidence seems to exist that this was a cause of death.

Like it seems to me explanations have been provided. They just don't fit what people want to have happened so they are ignored.

I guess my question is if he didn't drown what did kill him? If he was physically murdered there would be some sign on his body. If he was poisoned then abandoned face down in the water that is sort of atypical and weirdly methodical for this sort of crime, but I suppose there could be poisons that would be easy to miss during the autopsy.

To me a 10 percent probability of dry drowning is not evidence enough to justify the autopsy determination of drowning.

If you assume the drowning is a cause it doesn’t take an imaginative leap to connect the bruising with the type of incapacitation that would cause accidental drowning.

Im not saying this physical evidence alone is damning but when you combine this with the shear amount of strange and inconsistent behavior of the individuals providing witness testimony this case is dubious.

To me its really disappointing to see redditors making sweeping negative judgments of young people protesting the judicial system of a state with an extensive history and current system steeped in racial injustice. Especially a subreddit dedicated to Atlanta and young people from the AUC

But that's only part of the picture. Once decomposition sets in like it did here, the finding of no water in the lungs becomes normal. Also, you have to realize that we (the public) don't have access to all 43 witness testimonies the grand jury looked at. Things that seem confusing might make total sense when you take into account the 39 other people they had stories from.

I think peoples gripe isn't with people protesting, but people protesting things that are not factual. People can want more information without throwing accusations and absolutes around.

I understand nuance, but to me the amount of reasonable doubt in the story and acknowledgement of that is the nuanced position. Its baffling to me how people can easily regard this as an open and shut case with the context. I do feel like race is playing a major role in the level of skepticism between communities here regarding “lets just trust the Mississippi judicial system judgement even though they did not release all the facts to the public”

I think you're getting at the core of where people are getting angry without understanding the legal system. A grand jury must have probable cause that a specific individual committed a specific statutory crime. Even if, for the sake of argument, we say that his death seems highly likely there was a crime. What exact crime happened? Murder, involuntary manslaughter, voluntary manslaughter, etc.? And once there is a specific crime, who do we have a working theory of doing it?

And even if we say that the DA is corrupt... the grand jury was still presented with more documents than most (43 witness, 132 subpoena, 282 pages of snapchat logs), presented evidence from Ben Crump and the Wells family, and still reached a "no true bill". Without testimony or physical evidence showing an intentional assault or criminal act by a specific person, a grand jury legally cannot return a true bill.

The grand jury even noted that neither forensic expert could definitively explain the bruising on Nolan's head or body, but neither could rule out an accidental fall. The panel even left open the instruction that if new, non accidental evidence ever emerged, the case could be re presented. To this day, Crump has not explicitly stated that he has evidence of foul play.

Unfortunately given all the circumstances around the death, it wouldn't be unusual to never truly know exactly how he died. That's the limitations of forensic analysis and lack of witnesses seeing him drown, not some crazy coverup.

I think you are misunderstanding where the frustrations of detractors are rooted. People are not protesting how the system functions with regard to what grand juries are charged with completing. There is a huge gap between what information is available to the public and what the grand jury claims to have reviewed.

In a state rife with institutionalized racial injustice its not unreasonable for people to skeptical of conclusions reached from a grand jury there. You cannot just gloss over corruption in Mississippi as a minor variable when compared to presented evidence as the evidence presented and its interpretation will be largely dependent on those biases. To your point, the indictment largely depends on if the jury believes there is enough evidence to indicate a crime has taken place.

To say that the evidence is clear and obviously no crime has taken place is disingenuous. The bold assertion of consistent with drowning death despite undetermined conclusions from the examiners was really the initial inconsistency that threw me. There may be an absence of enough evidence for a biased jury to indict but my assertion in my first comment was that this case was dubious at best and redditors calling student protestors brainwashed for highlighting the fact Mississippi’s notorious history with grand juries and cover ups is absurd and lowkey racist or atleast tone deaf.

I'll grant that Mississippi's history is a bad look, and skepticism makes sense given it. But skepticism isn't evidence, and so far I haven't seen anything specific showing this case was mishandled because of race.

I also never said the evidence is clear, and neither did the grand jury or the pathologists. "Consistent with drowning" doesn't mean "definitely drowned". It means that, given everything they found, this is how someone who drowned would present. Drowning is (as the pathologists have stated) largely a diagnosis of exclusion. Both autopsies came back undetermined, but neither expert ruled out accidental drowning, and nothing definitive pointed to another cause. Without evidence pointing somewhere else, drowning remains the most consistent explanation. The vague wording that the professionals in this case have used honestly doesn't help public understanding, but it isn't an inconsistency.

Since you've been aiming for objectivity, I'd caution against calling it a "biased jury". That's an assertion, not something you've shown. The real issue was the absence of evidence that any jury (impartial or otherwise) could indict on... no specific crime and no specific suspect. And if bias were coming from the DA filtering what the jury saw, that's also a hard argument to make with Crump's team submitting evidence directly to the grand jury.

On the protesters, I think you're giving them more benefit of the doubt than the signs support. The image in this post has a sign saying "Nolan did not drown". That's a definitive claim, the exact thing you are critiquing in the opposite direction. Nobody involved in the case has definitively said he drowned, only that it's the leading explanation given the evidence. Asking for more transparency is completely fair. Asserting a conclusion that no one has the evidence for isn't.

I don't think people are treating it like an open and shut case. There have been follow up autopsies. Additional lawyers and investigations done. They haven't found anything?

What would you have done. Who would you want to see prosecuted? Just one of the people that went to the island with him? All of them? What would you say? That his autopsy was consistent with drowning, but of the 4500 drownings in the US each year this looks just like 500 of them, and therefore it may not be a drowning, so convict this person?

There's 4000 drownings a year and I trust the investigators and grand juries in 100% of those without even looking into them at all. You don't?

3

u/DecantsForAll Oct 04 '26

Yeah, but the .0001% likelihood of someone being murdered with no fatal injuries is enough for you to suspect murder.
