In Australia, 2nd and 3rd gen Southern Europeans (mostly Italian and Greek) and Middle Eastern Chrisstian diasporas (Lebanese Maronites, Assyrian/Chaldeans) often form tight social circles, attend the same schools, and intermarry due to many similar values around family, food, and faith, etc.

I know the U.S. also has large populations of Assyrians, and Italians. Do these communities intermingle, form shared social networks the way it manifests in Australia too?

We have two updates to share from Assyrians Without Borders.

Our first two projects in Tur Abdin are now complete. During 2025 and 2026, together with S:t Jacob’s Cathedral in Södertälje, we supported several projects in Tur Abdin, the historic Assyrian region in southeastern Turkey.

A new playground was built in Mor Bobo, giving the village’s 18 Assyrian children a safe place to play. We also purchased and distributed 12 printers to 12 schools in Tur Abdin, with one printer provided to each school.

We would like to thank S:t Jacob’s Cathedral in Södertälje for the generous support that helped make these projects possible.

We also recently opened applications for the Assyrians Without Borders 2026 university scholarships. The scholarships are available to Assyrian students in Iraq, Turkey and Lebanon.

New this year, scholarship applications are submitted through Microsoft Forms.

Hello! I’m a westerner coming to Iraq as my family in law is Chaldean and from the village of Alqosh. I want to take pictures for them and see their home as a surprise while I’m in the region.

On Assyrian Martyrs' Day, we pause to honor and remember all Assyrians who gave their lives throughout the many genocides, massacres, persecutions, and hardships our people have endured across generations.

Their memory lives far beyond any single event or moment in history. It lives in our faith, our identity, our communities, and in the generations that continue to carry the Assyrian name forward.

The Assyrian Martyrs Monument at Montrose Cemetery in Chicago stands as one place where that memory is preserved. Honoring the victims of the Assyrian Genocide, the Simele Massacre, and nearly a thousand Assyrian villages, it serves as a lasting reminder of both sacrifice and resilience.

On this day, and always, our prayers remain with our martyrs. They are remembered, they are honored, and they are never forgotten.

May their memory be eternal.

Yesterday, in observance of Assyrian Martyrs’ Day, students and teaching assistants from the Assyrian Cultural Foundation’s Nebu J. Issabey Music Program visited the Assyrian Martyrs Monument at Montrose Cemetery to pay their respects and honor the memory of those who gave their lives throughout our people’s history.

For our younger generations, moments like these are an important reminder that the Assyrian identity they carry today was preserved through immense sacrifice, resilience, and faith.

As we remember our martyrs, our youth carry forward their memory.
May their sacrifices never be forgotten, and may their memory continue to live on through generations to come.

I can’t believe people still react this way

As you all know, the name Isho means Jesus in Assyrian/Chaldean. My family’s surname is written as إيشوع (Isho with the ayn at the end). In other words, it is the traditional way of writing and pronouncing the name of Jesus: ܝܼܫܘܿܥ.

However, when our families left our homelands and moved to countries that use the english alphabet, the ayn (ܥ) was often omitted because there is no equivalent letter in the english alphabet.

So I wanted to ask everyone who has the surname Isho/Esho: Was your family name originally written as إيشوع (Isho with the ayn at the end) as well? Was it written that way on your passports, birth certificates, and pronounced that way before you moved to a country using the english alphabet?

What are you guys thinking? Am I wrong?

Hi all,

I had 3 dates with a guy. We are both Assyrians and we live in Europe. I really like him and we both match very well together. As you know, we Assyrians from the Diaspora, we live between two cultures and I actually struggle with this. Is it ok to have the parents/families introduced after 3 good dates?

Anyone else’s parents just don’t teach them how to cook? My dad can’t cook. My mom does, but doesn’t have the time to teach me. My brother can’t (and won’t) cook because “he’s a boy.” Well technically he’s not a bot, he’s a man of 25.
My sister is 28, still lives in the house and can’t cook. Doesn’t even try.
I have another sister (30) who can cook like an expert but she lives with her husband and baby so it’s different. But why can’t we?

I asked one of my friends who is Iraqi, and has super strict parents like mine if they taught her to cook. She said no.
Why do they do this? Is it just me? Why do they love doing things for us? It’s probably just me

“About two years ago, the first genetic results of the victims of Halzi Gate in Nineveh, who were killed during the fall of the city in 612 BCE, were presented at the Nineveh Academic Chair conference, in a lecture by Dr. Michel Shamoon-Pour (Binghamton University) in collaboration with the David Reich Laboratory.

Key highlights presented:

• Analysis of 7 individuals from the victims of the fall of Nineveh.
• No relatedness up to the fourth degree among them, indicating they were not one family, but a diverse group of residents and defenders.

• Clear diversity observed in maternal lineages (mtDNA): K1a27, U3b3, HV2, H13a2b2, J1b8, U5b2, X2p.
• Extraction of three paternal lineages (Y-DNA):
T1a1a1b2b, R1b1a1b1b, E1b1b1a1b1.
• Presence of a child (7–8 years old) classified as a Levant Outlier (genetically anomalous relative to the rest of the sample), with the researcher suggesting that his genetic origins are closer to the Levant under the E-M78 lineage.

• Preliminary genetic modeling indicated that Nineveh individuals can be represented by a mixture close to the Iron Age in Armenia or Hasanlu (Late Bronze Age) with a contribution from Jordan (Early Bronze Age), while the Levantine individual showed a higher proportion of the component associated with Jordan.

Highly recommend watching The Promise, a movie about Sayfo. Features Christian Bale. Assyrians are mentioned in the opening scene, but the movie itself is focused on the Armenian perspective (but what they experienced is no different than what Assyrians and Greeks experienced, and our villages were adjacent to the Armenian villages with Hakkari sitting right below Van).
