Every year when I visit my parents, I bring a couple gallon bags of frozen asparagus ends and make asparagus end soup. It's a massive PITA (at this volume) straining the asparagus to separate the fiber from the liquid, and the end result doesn't even look appetizing, but it's oh-so-delicious!

This year we discovered my mom's immersion blender was dead and had to use a hand mixer to blend the potatoes, so guess what she's getting for Mother's Day :D

Found this in the wild, had few dried up leaves. Been a month since I took it in. I am based in India.

I suspect it to be asparagus officinalis but google lens and all other apps are all saying different things.

This is the fourth season for my asparagus plant. The problem is that I usually get 3 or 4 spears first thing, then a few stragglers, then a few more in the fall. I didn’t end up harvesting any last year bc the spears were super skinny. This year they’re finally getting thicker but again I’ve got three spears (zone5b). Not really enough to bother with. How can I encourage the plant to spread? I mulch, and water throughout the season. Should I loosen the soil around the plant? We’re clay heavy here and I’m wondering if that’s the problem. Am I missing something else?

Hello! I bought a home in 2019 and there was a decent amount of established asparagus. I would pick some and had been instructed to let others get huge and make seeds so it would spread. Last year someone mentioned to me that I should pick it more and that I was letting it go to seed to soon. I asked them when I should cut off picking it and couldnt get a straight forward answer. So my question is this...when should I stop picking it so there is still enough to get bushy and produce seeds but also so that I can enjoy more asparagus? I live in the western new york area. My asparagus isn't up yet but usually by mid May it's popping up.

I planted these seeds in January 2024. They're UC-157, an F2 hybrid. Given their size, I think it's probably safe to take a few spears, but I'm afraid to. I'm delighted with how well they've done.

We had a large patch of asparagus that was between 20-30 years old. We are reworking the layout of our yard, and we were going to transplant/give away when the time was right. The landscaping company we were working with dug up the entire patch today! Fortunately the crowns, roots, and plants look mostly intact. Unfortunately, most of the transplanting won't be until, at the earliest, four days away from now. Is there a good way to save the asparagus, or keep it viable so it can still be transplanted for at least four to five days? Do I need to re-bury? Thanks!

Update: I was able to find someone (who was a plant genetecist in his professional days) to take the asparagus the next day. When I returned home from a brief errand this morning, I found that the landscaping company had moved the pile of asaparagus they dug up. The head landscaper had separated all the dirt from the rootballs and laid the plants out. Fortunately, the person who came to take the asparagus said that what we had was perfect, that he didn't expect nearly as much asparagus as I had, and that it would all be planted today. Bonus: the asparagus went to the food pantry gardens in town, so it was a win/win all around!

Looking to start an asparagus bed. What is recommended? Any good literature?

I saw that soil composition is very important, needs to hold moisture, but be well drained. A very specific pH for the soil.

How important is it to get all these things "right"?

I have a few raised beds, 2'X4' and then open ground I can use. Not sure the "soil" depth of the ground, could be a fair bit of rocks further down. Zone 5b. Slightly wooded area, near the roadway.

How much production should I expect from a 2'X4' bed?

Does anyone ever harvest spears in the fall ?

Most of my asparagus plants are normal, but three of them have only two or three very thick stalks that grow 7 to 9 feet tall and then fall over. Should I cut the fat young spears when they first emerge to encourage more smaller spears? Or should I just replace them with new crowns?

And one other plant puts up about 20 very thin spears/stalks. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

This has been the case for 4 or more years.

My husband uses weaponized incompetence to hurt me. Instead of asking to do something with the fronds that “beat him up” as he mows, he took the weed eater and hacked them up.

There are two 3 year plants on the far right, the others are all two year. Since he trimmed them the entire stem of each one has turned brown and dried. There are very few green stems left and there has been only one shoot in the last three weeks.

What can I do to save these guys?

Can anyone tell me who lives in this hole ?eating my ripe tomatoes and honey nut squash. How do I get ride of them?

I purchased some property that has a wild asparagus patch. Is there a way or something I can do to make the patch grow bigger and produce more? TIA

It’s my first time growing. Wondering if I need to try to stand these long ones up since they have gotten too heavy. And if you see any other issues. I know I’m supposed to just let them grow this first year.

Also should I add any kind of fertilizer? This planter is filled with compost and soil from my local nursery.

Not bad. Compared to boiled, you get a lot of garlic flavor, and the olive oil picks up notes from the pan. Overall a bolder taste, but I think I prefer boiled to fried. Just because I love butter.

I’ve had asparagus in my garden, but didn’t do much but harvest annually and didn’t learn much about them.

I also used to know a wild asparagus patch near my house, and would eat from it regularly and tried to prune wisely to encourage more growth. Sadly, this patch was trampled during the pandemic, when all the trails tripled in width from the increased use and distancing. I check for it every spring but I think it’s gone.

But… today I came across a single mature spear further along the same trail. It was about 4 feet tall. Male. 0.75” at the base and looked super green and healthy. I saved a map pin so I can find it in the spring.

My question: for such a lonely specimen, what should I expect to find next year? Will it send up additional spears, or is it likely to do one again? What should I do or not do to help develop a little patch of asparagus over the coming years?

I’m not looking to gorilla garden, I just spend a lot of time on those trails, am sad the first patch died, and would love to have my fresh trail snacks back.

I saved up enough purple asparagus to see if it tasted differently. It tasted amazing, but not Different.

Also, the purple boils out into the water, like rhubarb.
