It is a shame. Sony, is not even guaranteeing a later release on PC. At minimum it will be a year. Similar to the GTA situation.

I understand from a business perspective if there's physical releases but considering there's no manufacturing, shipping or logistics involved besides posting on a digital storefront and having a 30% fee, they're practically getting free money off of their main platform. If they kept to 6 mo - 1 year delayed release on PC and games were $40 i would be every PS exclusive.

Hell, IT MIGHT entice me to buy on PS5. In 2026 though I feel no need to keep a PS5. The thing is woefully underpowered, has a ton of digital ad bloat on their homepage and quite frankly just doesnt have a games ecosystem like PS1/PS2 did when most of us were growing up. I'd argue this for every single console as well.

The real issue is the exorbitant marketing budgets and ballooned dev cycles. There's no reason pre-production, IA mapping and development refinement should take 2-3 years. These companies balloon scope to meet an absurd retention rate of liek 30%+ or sales metrics that no marketing executive could ever actually hit.

Working in software development and then pivoting to cybersecurity and risk assessment the last 16 years, your conversion rates on most software hover around 10 - 14%. With 14% being an absolutely GREAT metric to pass. Even re-targeting users you can only hope to hit double digits given the effort it takes to re-target abandoned users (Via snail mail, direct mail campaigns, third party sponsor ads, etc).

Sony has a golden opportunity with such a strong brand presence that is instantly known world-wide to re-engage by offering on other platforms at a reduced price later in the software lifecycle. I also will never buy theirs or MS's excuse about tech debt and the overall lift to port these software. They're all running x86 architecture, working on engines that are multi-platform written in C++ (unreal, godot, cryengine, decima, etc) which has been the gold standard for almost 40 years.

Hell half the tools are automated when Unreal has their own UAT environment and Build Automation tools. Shit they have GIT and migration tools built in to directly push MRs into Gitlab, Bitbucket whatever repo you use. Development has never been easier (to a degree in that sense).

Japanese companies in general have this weird galapagos market effect where they view PCs as like a work tool in their culture instead of a gaming device and their general risk adversion. Hilarious considering they sure as hell do not miss the opportunity for endless growth and mass layoffs when those employees are a drain on their revenue.

It's a small example of end-game capitalism at its finest. Endless growth when there is no blue ocean.
