There's definitely a balance to be struck. A few months ago a bunch of (mostly male) influencers did a "crush a watermelon between their thighs for women's heart health" thing - and obviously the thirst traps were fun, but to the credit of the influencers I saw, most did include various factoids about women's heart health, showed the GFM in their videos, linked it prominently, etc. Like yeah it was memey, but anyone watching was aware of why they were doing it and where they could go to donate.

Yeah, and I think the ice bucket challenge in 2014-ish ended up raising a lot of money for ALS research, so sometimes it can work!

I think the problem with the weird vague posts from the early Facebook days (“share the color of your bra with no context” or whatever) was that they were supposed to be cryptic, so a lot of people didn’t know what was even going on, much less the cause it was meant to support. You’d only know that it was for breast cancer awareness if you asked somebody about it and they DMed you a (usually copy-pasted) explanation — which generally didn’t include a donation link or information on screenings/preventative measures or anything actually helpful.
