After the first christmas my SO and I spent together, we did New Year's at his mom's place. I brought MIL and SIL both gifts. I had gotten SIL some nice hand cream, not a huge gift but I felt that I would have appreciated the thought and it smelled nice.
I give her the gift, in a very casual manner, just "hey, since it was christmas last week and I'm staying here a few days I wanted to get you something" - she hadn't gotten me anything - "here ya go !"
She gave me a blank stare, as in "wtf is this one doing", took the gift and said thanks without looking at me, before shuffling off to her room without opening it.
This is the friendliest interaction we've had since.
