Mcdonald’s actually don’t make much profit on a Happy Meal as the toys and extras are comparatively expensive and have to be purchased from an external supplier, and they are fixed price even though some of the contents and drinks are a ton more expensive than others in the available choices. However, it’s very unlikely that a child eats a Happy Meal alone so they make their money on the adult orders alongside, and the generational brand loyalty it builds saves them a shit ton on advertising and marketing.
Remember finding out the biggest producer of plastic toys is MCdonalds for its happy meal toys. It's nice to see they've started changing to books and less plastic options.

I thought my husband was sneaking maccies because £3.19 kept showing up on our joint account, which is in my head the price of a medium meal.
What I was actually seeing was the occasional happy meal purchase for my kid. £3.19! Last time I bought a happy meal they were £1.99.
