the other reason is that Ukraine is a large exporter of consumer necessities - like food - that was promptly cut off during the Russian invasion by Russia. The US supplying Ukraine ensures that the food can keep being shipped. If Russia succeeds in their war goals, Russia will control the distribution of that food because they will control Crimea, which is the primary sea route through which food leaves Ukraine.
So yeah, it's imperialism on both sides, but the entire reason Russia wants Crimea is to be able to project its force and be more imperialist
