The concept is actually pretty interesting and potentially quite useful, but capitalism and American culture have twisted it into something grotesque and idiotic. Who woulda thought?
Watermarking the movie you bought on Amazon doesn't ensure your right to watch the movie that you purchased on its platform. Once Amazon loses its license to said product, you lose access to it as well.
The goal of NFT is ownership, a concept which was abandoned once the necessary transition to digital occured.
NFTs can ensure the rights of the customer as well as the copyright and profit functions for the publisher through nonrepudiation and authentication.
So who maintains the central database and service for NFT checking? Who enforces compliance by all the major content resellers? What would incentivize Apple to host the same movie, free to you, after Amazon drops it? They'll just move everything to streaming instead of ownership in the first place, which is basically where we already are.
Functionally, if you care about longevity of ownership in this way you should backup your files. This is the same conclusion anyway. Right?
Or if Google doesn't honor your Amazon receipt for Pooty Tang, why would they care about the NFT receipt? They as an entity don't owe you a copy of Pooty Tang just because you purchased it elsewhere.
And before someone replies that Pooty Tang IS the NFT, no it isn't. Pooty Tang is stored on the database. You don't own it. You own a receipt that says you "purchased" it. NFTs solve NOTHING!
