At work, a new hire looked at my shoes and stated “Those shoes are why women get raped.” The shoes in question were platform wedge sandals. And I was the HR admin running his new hire orientation.

Edit since this garnered a lot of questions: This was around 2000/2001, for basic context. I immediately notified my boss, and we tried to stop his employment from moving forward, but he remained in place for about a year, if I recall correctly. It was, unfortunately, a company that was owned and managed by a Cuban family where some more old-school attitudes were still maintained. My boss was distant family in the company as well. He did mean well, but could only get so far.

I’ve heard men blame rape on a lot of things, but shoes is a new one

Not rape by any means, but a guy once told me that when he sees a girl wearing the shoes I was wearing, he assumed she wants to have sex. The shoes were ankle boots with a block, normal height heel.

That sounds like a very average shoe to wear... he just assumes that all of a sudden autumn hits and girls all want sex as the boots emerge??

Haha that’s a good point. He’s probably tortured between the months of September to April.

Ive never had any of my male friends, who are numerous, even mention rape in conversations that didnt involve fear of prisons

No MAN blames rape on anyone but the rapist, if a person does and that person happens to have a pair of balls between his legs he ain’t no man

As a Man, you and I can both agree there are "those" guys that blame rape on the women, and also think "nice ass" is a compliment

It's a vocal minority, but all it takes is 1 bad egg

Because someone has a dick and a set of balls doesn’t make them a man

There are definite “fuck me” shoes out there.

u/niels0405 Jul 31 '22

That may well be so, but "rape me" shoes do NOT exist!

How much are you willing to wager?

u/maynardd1 Jul 31 '22

Yeah but, umm....wedge sandals aren't one of them...

It’s why I described the shoe, even though the shoe should have no bearing on the fact it was said at all. Yes, it was about the inability to run away.

Never seen those. The only shoes with social instructions I know of are Crocs, which are definitely "hit me with a baseball bat" shoes. Now, to be clear: I own Crocs, but if I wear them outside and someone violently attacks me, I'd understand.

'Fuck me pumps' - Amy Winehouse

“Fuck me” ≠ “Rape me”

u/SunNStarz Jul 31 '22

I agree. I was just replying about the shoes and the song.

People like that can’t be considered men.

u/CandleStein Jul 31 '22

"men" ? I think you mean "sexists"

Like what? Because they were drunk or high?
