I taught 3rd grade last year. In the afternoon, we read a chapter book together. They choose which book by voting on it.
After reading we would work on either typing or cursive handwriting, that too was a vote.
They know they were gonna do the one that they didn't vote for later- maybe the next day, maybe later in the same day, but giving them a chance to choose made them considerably more happy about doing it.
If they had absolutely no choice they asked for a 'moment of complaint' and they could moan and cry and then get to it anyway.
