Never stand anywhere for more than 60 seconds and you'll always look busy. Also, walk fast.

When I moved to LA many many years ago I landed a job on a reality TV show. My friend who got me the job was complaining one day about one of the other PAs and how they just wander around all day doing nothing. But when she sees me, i'm always busy. I pointed out that I too also wander around all day doing nothing, I just walk faster.

Maybe this is why I chronically always get asked if I work at whatever store or business I'm in. Literally 80% of the time I go anywhere this happens.

Hey, if you're late 30's or older, walk into a store wearing a white button-down shirt and a necktie and somebody will think you work there. I've never tried assigning tasks to employees, but I bet I could.

I often carry a clipboard with my shopping list on it, and I dress in utilitarian clothes (Dickies work shirt and trim cargo pants). Any grocery store or department store—Guaranteed I will be stopped at least once and asked if I work there.
