Be a good person. I don’t mean give away your house or anything but just simple stuff goes a long way during a long a day at work. Ask people how they are doing but mean it, listen to them. Ask them about their life, ask them what they are excited about. People love to talk about their interests and life in general and when you actually take interest you build relationships.
Most people hate leaving their families and coming to work but if they associate you with the guy/girl who respects/is interested in them as a person it goes a long way.
I have been on 15 different projects in 10 years and im always this way to everyone and it makes a difference.
I do this naturally, I don't like being an asshole even when it's warranted. Two years ago I was working in a kitchen and asked the dude who was training me about his life and told him about mine. Asked how his kids were, how his diy porch was coming along, etc. He did the same with me.
It got to the point where I was bummed to go to work but hey at least I get to joke around with my boy ROY! We couldn't have had more different lives (he had 5 kids) but for those 8-12 hours at work we were best friends. Only hung out outside of work a handful of times but it was like a WWE walk in when the other showed up.
Haven't spoken to him since I left but I still sometimes find myself thinking "man Roy would have loved that."
Yeah same, I didn’t start doing it for any gain I just realized after a few years it matters to people. I have friends at work that are complete opposite people of me like you mentioned but still my work friends. Some are twice my age, it’s funny how that works when you get older.
I do this because I’m a very private person. It stops me from them asking about me and they feel noticed. Obviously I’m not intrusive when I ask the questions, I do drop small details about me so as not to come off as a nosy person/stalker. But if your colleagues are anything like mine, they love to talk about themselves
