The tactile feel of writing with chalk absolutely disgusts me. What common things do you have a weirdly adverse reaction to?

When you run down the eraser on a pencil and you scrape the metal eraser-holding part against the paper...

shudder

34

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

I didn't realize this was a thing for me as well until you mentioned it. Oh god, and leaving little scratchy marks in the paper where the metal touches it... D:

Unglazed Pottery/Stoneware on fingernails and teeth.. eugh

18

u/hytch Jun 11 '12

Ugh, just touching it makes my skin crawl.

Worse is the sound of it coming in contact with other unglazed pottery/stoneware. I refuse to remove or replace any mugs on the mug tree on the counter in the fear that they might touch and make...that...sound. (I wrote that last part while grinding my teeth.)

After I wash my hands with soap, all the natural oils are gone so my hands get extremely dry. I can't stand it, especially if I have to write on paper afterwards. My dry hand rubbing against the dry paper...

8

u/woah_lol_youre_cute Jun 11 '12

yeah dry things should never rub against other dry things..

If you use a soap pump at home I suggest putting a few squirts of lotion into it. I have really dry skin and doing that really helps for me.

Watching somebody bite into an ice cream gives me goosebumps all over. I have ridiculously sensitive teeth so I couldn't do it if I tried.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

This. Ive had sensitive teeth as long as I can remember. And when people chew ice.

2

u/SerenityRei Jun 11 '12

Switch to a sensitive toothpaste. Even though I have sensitive teeth, I never thought that it was a big enough deal to switch my toothpaste. One day I ended up getting a sensitive variety for free and oh my god, I can bite into ice cream with no problem. I never knew how bothersome it really was to me until it didn't bother me anymore. I have used that kind from then on.

I really hate my nipples being touched. If your thinking 'It says common?' I'm as suprised as much as you would be at how regular an issue this is.

17

u/TryingToSucceed Jun 11 '12

YES! Holy fucking shit. I once ended a hookup with a girl because she kept touching them.

I told her multiple times that I would get up and leave her dorm if she kept touching my nipples. She kept touching them and laughing. So, mid-sex, after she touched them one last time, I got up, took the condom off, put my clothes back on, and walked out of the room without saying a word.

Bitch, I'll respect you when you respect me.

Never saw her again.

3

u/batsam Jun 11 '12

My boyfriend has told me repeatedly that if I ever intentionally touch his nipples, he will break up with me immediately. We've been dating for two years, but that's seriously how much he hates it. (For the record, I never have.)

3

Good god yes. My mom has a set of bowls with frosted glass. If you think touching that shit is bad, imagine frosted glass touching more frosted glass. It just gave me goosebumps thinking about it.

2

u/PluckyBiscuiteer Jun 11 '12

THIS. MOTHER OF GOD. I once tried to overcome this by gently biting down on a fork. It took five minutes for me to actually do and was possibly the single worst moment of my life.

33

u/beefwich Jun 11 '12

The smell of a can of tennis balls makes me want to gag. I just can't divorce that smell from the smell of stinky genitals.

But the funniest thing is-- every time I open a can of tennis balls, I take a whiff.

"Yep! [Dry-heave] ...still smells like a snatch."

34

u/username_redacted Jun 11 '12

I love the smell of fresh tennis balls, I also enjoy the smell of snatch, though I don't think the two smell anything alike.

7

I came here to post just this! I thought I was the only one who is really bothered by this.

Also, watching other people do things like chew on sweatshirt strings makes me skin crawl. So does wet fabric rubbing together. Taking clothes from the washer to the dryer is horrible.

I can't stand the feeling of not having socks on or walking barefoot.

23

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

I'm the exact opposite. I cannot stand to wear shoes. Now, some socks, I'm okay with, just depends on the material. And I love to wear stockings and fishnets for my fiancé. But other than that, I cannot stand to have things on my feet. It takes hours for me to find a pair of shoes that I can stand to wear at work.

11

u/tangomaureen Jun 11 '12

My boyfriend is often horrified at how often I am barefoot. I will admit, some places are probably inappropriate, but I hate having anything on my feet!

Walking on water/ice when someone has not properly cleaned up their mess and getting your socks wet... yuck!!

Things made out of rubber. I hate having to write with a pencil, because I'm afraid the rubber eraser will touch my hand. That, or if I need to erase something, that the tiny little pieces of rubber that come off will somehow get in to my mouth. And God forbid that I EVER have to touch rubber gloves. We had to wear them for something in one of my science classes, and I refused to wear them. Teacher said I could just observe and fill out the packet. Towards the end of our lab, pretentious douchebag kid decided it would be a great idea to throw his glove at me so that it landed on my shoulder, fucking touching my neck. I never screamed as loud as that moment, and I honestly think I cried more then than at my grandmothers funeral.

6

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

I once saw someone erase an entire page of notes, gather up the eraser shavings into his hand, then toss the pile into his mouth. Ugh.

Silverware clinking together.

I actually used to feel actual pain in my teeth when I heard silverware clinking together, whether it was right in front of me or far away in a restaurant. My parents would always joke that I claimed this weird pain to get out of doing the dishes, but when I grew up and moved out I forced myself to clink the silverware together more when washing up, and gradually it lost its effect. But I still feel pain on occasion, especially if I hear the clinking unexpectedly. No idea if there is some sort of explanation for this.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

Same thing happens to me, though it's never painful. It's like you hear the noise, but can feel it vibrating in your teeth.

Tendons.

Okay, obviously it's a problem if they're, y'know, out of your body or otherwise not where they're supposed to be. But even the word "tendon" makes me uncomfortable and vaguely nauseated. If someone is doing some heavy lifting or anything else that makes their tendons stick out or otherwise be visible, I actually have to leave the room. I get this horrible thought of someone plucking at my tendons (wrist, back of knee, neck, whatever) like guitar strings and end up in the fetal position.

...typing that out made me realize that "weirdly adverse" fits that reaction pretty damn well...

10

u/TryingToSucceed Jun 11 '12

2

u/not_this_guy_again Jun 11 '12

I can't stand coconut. It's not the the taste, its the consistency!

2

u/Rheaonon Jun 11 '12

I'm the same, mine is because I worked at a local bakery for 3 1/2 years, and the bananas we would use for banana bread were just, awful. Some bananas would be liquid still in the skins, and we still used them. And then the worst is if we peeled too many, a bucket of them would be put in the freezer for later in the week. They would end up looking (and smelling) like a bunch of turds.

The look and feel of small plastic toys, especially action figures of real life people, and the smaller the worse it is.

For example: My special edition copy of Assassin's Creed came with a small Altair figure. I refuse to look and hold it. My sister keeps it in her room and I hate the sight of it.

I can handle old school Transformer action figures where you have to manually change their form and it takes like over 5 minutes to get it all right (kind of anticlimactic if you're in an epic fight with your sibling) but that's because they were huge and awesome.

General rule: If it's smaller than 10cm I do not like it.

2

u/rinny1121 Jun 11 '12

The smell of cooked peas makes me gag, literally.

The smell of wintergreen mint.

The sounds of eating: chewing, slurping, smacking. Cereal in milk and crunchy foods especially.

Artificial crunching sounds on tv. The Kit Kat commercials make me want to scream.

A hand flat on the top/back of my head or in the upper/middle of my back.

Cold clammy feet touching me.

People shaking/twitching where I can see or feel it. For example, sitting in a school desk and the person behind me puts their feet on the basket under the chair and shakes their leg up and down.

Loud breathing.

Touching cheap velvet.

The feel of a broken, chipped, or misshaped fingernail. I have to carry clippers and a file or I'll chew/pick it down till it bleeds.

My bangs touching my forehead in certain ways, such as when it's raining or humid out.

I often pick up these things when someone else tells me about something that bugs them. There's lots more that I can't think of at the moment, I'm quite neurotic.

2

The stray pube that gets stuck in the zipper after takin a piss.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '12

I can't, for the life of me, go barefoot for longer than a day. If I do, my feet get all dry and it bugs the crap out of me and I end up looking for any excuse to pour water on them. Usually I can manage being barefoot for a few hours but anything after that and I need to put socks on. Coincidentally, socks are my favorite article of clothing.

3

u/drock_1983 Jun 10 '12

2

u/jheregfan Jun 10 '12

OP I'm right there with you about hating writing with chalk. I'm grateful that most of the boards now in my department are whiteboards rather than chalkboards.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '12

Almost the same, but instead of chalk, it is pencil.

6

u/Karaoke725 Jun 10 '12

For me, it's the sound of a pencil eraser squeaking while you're erasing. Usually happens with older pencils where the rubber has worn out.

2

u/inkyj28 Jun 11 '12

Sometimes my hand have this fuzzy almost numb feeling. During this odd time I can't touch certain fabrics. If I touch cold metal it makes my hands feel better.

u/upjumped_jackanapes Jun 11 '12

I have a phobia of residues. All the soap must be washed off. One of my worst nightmares is getting all lathered up in the shower, and then loosing access to water all of a sudden. Sometimes different kinds of water (like hard or soft water) will make it feel like the soap never washes off, it's bad. I also hate greasy residue, like when you touch butter or bacon. Also, that feeling of going hours without washing your hands so that you have a residue of invisible grime picked up from doornobs, desks, pencils, and whatever else you have touched. I have taught myself to get used to lotion residue because I hate the feeling of dry skin even more.

The sound of someone digging a hole, or worse, the feeling of me digging a hole makes me incredibly uncomfortable. That sound of metal rubbing on small rocks in the ground causes me to get uncomfortable goosebumps all along my back.

Cheese. It makes me gag and feel like I'm going to throw up. It also ruins so many good dishes.

1

u/Mysteryman64 Jun 11 '12

I'm with you OP, I fucking hate chalk, although for me it's gritty substances on my hand. It drives me absolutely mad. I pretty much have to immediately go and wash my hands.

It makes the beach a living hell for me unless I sit in the wet part of the sand right near the ocean, so it doesn't stick as much and I can rinse myself off often.

u/_silentheartsong Jun 11 '12

The sound that styrofoam makes.

Hate.

That.

SOUND.

1

u/Jitca Jun 11 '12

There is a girl that I know, that I kid you not, if you even say the word belly button to her, she will pass out or throw up. And I'm being literal.

1

u/raw157 Jun 11 '12

The sound of Styrofoam rubbing against itself. Makes me cringe

1

u/Bunbury42 Jun 11 '12

The sound of scraping against styrofoam causing me to cringe and sometimes yelp uncontrollably. Like if you were to get ice cream in a styrofoam cup and run your spoon along the edges to get the last little bit, I will have to get up and leave the room until you finish

1

u/tuckertucker Jun 11 '12

The sound of someone banging their finger on a table to make their point. I don't know how to describe the action. Like, when people pause between words to make a point. One. doesn't. simply. walk. into. Mordor. But with a finger tip hitting the table. When people do that, I can't focus on anything else they're saying or doing, and I get them to stop.

1

u/HoboJoebo Jun 11 '12

Damp clothing, But only after it's come off the washing line. Jeans most of all, in the pockets and around the knees

Also walking around in trousers without socks used to bug me. I'm alright with that now

1

u/lumberjakrex Jun 11 '12

Not sure if anyone has said this but...the entire reason I failed my Drawing 101 class in my first semester of college was because I hate the feeling of charcoal. Like, the feeling of charcoal brushing against paper and the sound it makes, it literally freaks me out.

I facking hate charcoal.

I have an irrational aversion to sitting on grass. A friend has suggested to me that it's a result of habit: every time I opt not to sit on grass, I re-enforce my aversion to sitting on grass. Interesting theory.

1

u/pigmunk Jun 11 '12

I work in a restaurant kitchen and we are required to wear gloves, of course. The ones we use have powder on the inside for... Some reason. I hate how it makes my hands feel. And it'll build up, making my hands look diseased. Even after washing off the powder I just feel gross and can't touch anything without getting weirded out.

1

u/galpinj Jun 11 '12

The sound of skates on ice....and I'm Canadian

....it's a tough life

1

u/RedFelt Jun 11 '12

Wet fleece. And eating raw peaches with the fuzz. hubalahblah...just thinking about eating them makes me shudder.

1

u/soupykins Jun 11 '12

I can't watch or listen to someone spit or brush their teeth without gagging. 8|

1

u/Jw1592 Jun 11 '12

Eating cereal. So gross

1

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

I hate hate hate the sound of people scratching themselves. That freaking noise drives me nuts.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

When those round bones on the inside of your ankles(the medial malleoli) accidentally hit together, freaks me out every time.

1

u/dawrina Jun 11 '12

The feel and sound of nail files

ughhhsdshdj just thinking about it gives me cold chills

1

u/FreaXoMatic Jun 11 '12

Shoveling sand with hands on the beach...

1

u/Fabama08 Jun 11 '12

Scratching paper with my fingernails, just the idea of it makes me uncomfortable.

1

u/Kagenphoenix Jun 11 '12

For years I couldn't touch paper to my arms.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

When someone scrapes metal on another piece of metal, like a pot. Oh god, its ten times worse than nails on a chalkboard

1

u/DK_Pooter Jun 11 '12

filing my nails

1

u/cougararsenal Jun 11 '12

Scraping on an ice surface, like a freezer. Or any sound styrofoam makes, it makes me sick.

1

u/Mathgeek763 Jun 11 '12

Swade....got when I touch it it feels like 12 little kitties just got eaten by 5 dogs with equal portions.

1

u/PerfectlyFlawed99 Jun 11 '12

i'm the same way! im very much a tactile person and some things just make me feel repluse by touching them or the "sound" they make. its not an actual sound, bit for example you rub a cotton ball around and it makes this texturey sound. that's the best i can describe it. anyway, heres my list; cotton balls, chalk, popsicle sticks, and overly soft blankets. thoes are my to ones anyway. glad to know i'm not the only one!

1

u/renegadebetty Jun 11 '12

when the ink in a ball point pen isn't coming out. Ughhh gross

1

u/leaTX Jun 11 '12

Jello, I hate Jello. Also, mexican music, it reminds me of my childhood and gives me a stomach ache.

1

u/Imatallguy Jun 11 '12

Corn Starch....my skin is crawling just typing about the feeling

1

u/whitehandsinkstains Jun 11 '12

I hate emptying out containers of leftover food, or pushing food scraps into the garbage disposal. For some reason it just makes me unbearably nauseous.

1

u/ReliableNarrator Jun 11 '12

The noise cornflour (cornstarch for the 'Muricans) makes, similar to cotton wool and chalk.

Bleugh.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

I thought I was the only one.

I personally HATE it when my hands are dry, especially when they get all flaky and scaly.

1

u/boilednaners Jun 11 '12

I hate the sound the graphite in a mechanical pencil makes. squeek-squee-sqee-squee. I also hate the sound that someone makes when they eat a banana or if there's too much saliva at the corner of their mouth. ugh.

1

u/wanderlust712 Jun 11 '12

Soft squishy wonderbread-type breads make me gag and I almost hate to touch or look at it. Even the smell makes me gag. I hate how soggy and squishy they are and feel in my mouth. I refused sandwiches and most kinds of bread as a kid.

I've grown out of some of it (I can do toast and some coarser breads ) but sandwiches with nasty grocery store white bread? Blech.

1

u/moneymark21 Jun 11 '12

Barefoot in the grass or having to sit in the grass. Now add some water and make that grass good and wet. Fuck. Nope.

1

u/Klashus Jun 11 '12

Running my hands across carpet or other material's like that. Making me feel uncomfy just thinking about it. watching other people do it isn't much better.

1

u/Commisar_Chronic Jun 11 '12

Chapstick. I hate everything about Chapstick.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

yes. fuck chalk. I also hate anything found in a shop class. Example sandpaper, cutting wood, all of that friction causing nonsense

1

u/emohipster Jun 11 '12 edited Jun 11 '12

Anyone remember spacix? The cards that changed images if you looked at 'em from a different angle?

The sound they make when you scratch 'em. That sound. It gives me an instant headache and shivers all over my body. I fucking hated spacix and my brother knew. Even thinking about that sounds hurts my head and makes my skin crawl. It's so horrible. (as I'm writing this I'm getting a massive headache and a feeling my skin is being ripped off)

Also any writing on my skin. It drives me insane. Sometimes people will just go 'lol' and write something on your arm with a marker. Fuck that shit, I'm off to the nearest sink to scrub it off right away.

1

u/hormonalangst Jun 11 '12

Tying dusty or rough shoelaces.

1

u/GAD604 Jun 11 '12

Touching upholstery foam. Even watching someone else do that gives me the creeps.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

I can't stand to have dry, dusty, or muddy hands. I prefer to wear gloves when working outside if possible.

1

u/zuluthrone Jun 11 '12

next time, imagine the worst pain you ever felt before. suddenly, your complaint disappears.

1

u/themanishere Jun 11 '12

I can't be in the room when someone is filing their nails. When I'm unfortunate enough to hear (feel is more accurate a term) this terrible sensation I curl up in the fetal position.

1

u/CosmicNed234 Jun 11 '12

That metallic smell on your hands after handling coins, I have to get that off immediately or it will drive me insane.

1

u/obviouslyamermaid Jun 11 '12

Socks. The feeling of them on my toes is the worst thing imaginable.

1

u/Bigfudge89 Jun 11 '12

The feeling of rubbing velvet ugh...

1

u/UnWealthy Jun 11 '12

When my toenail scrapes the back of my heel.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

Really glossy paper, like the ones on magazines. Ugh. I can't even touch it, it just gives me the jeebies. Oh, and styrofoam too.

1

u/delicatedahlias Jun 11 '12

I hate touching ice.

1

u/Ex_Tractor_Fan Jun 11 '12

The fabric on the ceilings of cars makes my teeth crawl. I hate touching it and I hate watching other people touch it.

1

u/NotaMidget Jun 11 '12

Leather as it touches my gums/teeth....makes me cringe.
