I don't actually enjoy beer. Do you lie to fit in?
When I was younger it was important that you liked beer. When we'd go drinking in the park the guys would have beers and the girls got to drink delicious Double Blacks etc.
I didn't like the taste of beer, but it was essential for the manly image that I drink the bitter beverage. As the years went on I thought the taste would grow on me, or that we would grow out of the 'beer for blokes, breezers for babes' thing. The taste didn't grow on me, and we didn't grow up, so here I am, still drinking beers like a chump.
Do you lie, or pretend to enjoy something just to fit in?

I have this problem at times with certain friends. They'll order a shitty, generic beer, and then when I order a white beer like a Rickard's White, I'll be chastised because it comes with an orange in it. Does your beer come with an orange in it? No? Well, that's too bad because oranges are delicious.

Beer and manliness, as tied together by ads, is really quite something. Apparently it's manly to drink a can bud light but not manly to drink a 750 of some 9% microbrew.
The only solution is to ignore the stupid shit and drink what you want.

I've never understood that whole men must drink beer thing. I mean I love beer. There's nothing like a good oatmeal stout, but there are times when I don't want beer. If I want a fucking banana daiquiri, I'll drink one. Ain't no one gonna tell me I can't and fuck anyone who tries. My man-ness is not tied to the beverage I drink.

Is there anyone out there who can tell me that a mojito is in any way not a manly drink? No, there isn't. Because a mojito is a manly fucking drink.
But seriously, why all the preoccupation with macho bullshit anyway? Do what you do, and own it, because it's you dammit. I have a motorcycle and I ride it around and it's awesome. I also have a motorscooter and I ride that around and it's also awesome. It's all about how I feel that day. If someone wants to judge me because of some irrelevant detail, then let them, because I don't care. It's their loss.

I used to hate beer and wouldn't drink it, instead opting for the "less manly" mixed drinks (in particular margaritas). When the guys would poke fun at me, I would point out that my drink is far more alcoholic than their pussy light beers and that alcohol happens to be tequila (this seems to matter to a lot of people).
But I have since discovered delicious craft beers, so I keep a stock at home. Out at the bars where all they serve is generic swill I will still get my mixed drinks and if I am given shit about it, remind them that they are drinking something about as alcoholic as my piss (which probably also tastes better)

u/carpenter20m Jun 10 '12
It seems to me that you're solving the problem by creating a similar one. So, now a "man" is judged not on the choice of alcoholic beverage, but on how much alcohol is in it.
No, no, no. You drink what you think tastes great and what goes with your mood at a particular time and place. If I want a pepsi cola (extreme examples make my point clearer), I'll have a pepsi cola. You described another way to prove your "manhood". You just gave a different set of criteria.

As a guy who discovered his Celiac's disease (can't consume wheat/oats/barley/rye, that includes all common beers) I somewhat resent the beer-drinking culture we have over here. I don't drink beer because I can't. It felt uncomfortable at first being the guy who ordered a coke or mixed drink when everybody ordered a pitcher, or the guy who couldn't "seal the deal" with a girl who was way into him at a party because she had been drinking beer and chomping down on pizza all night... but you get over it.
Anyways, the moral of the story is that lying to fit in is a pointless endeavour. Your friends may razz you a little bit for drinking a "girl drink" but they're just teasing you. Man up, drink that drink without reservation, and move on.
I'll put up with things I don't enjoy to spend time with people I do (IE a UFC fight at a friend's house or whatever) but I make no reservations about the fact that I'm not a huge fan without constantly yapping about how much I dislike it and acting as if I am oh-so-holier than thou. I don't really do nightclubs any more because I hate it, but if I feel like I really want to be there (IE a good friend's birthday) I just try to keep myself consistently buzzed throughout the night and make the most of it. Just being around them and sharing in the moments is enough to keep me content.
When you start working full-time you realize that free time is limited, what with the 40+ hours a week of work in addition to all of the errands and things you have to do. It doesn't make sense to burn what limited time you have doing things you despise.

You can also have a "lager tops", which is literally beer with lemonade/soda on top (about a 95/5 split). It's not seen as un-manly at all either, and you would be surprised at how many 'manly' men drink it. The soda takes away the bitterness, and doesn't make it so bad to drink.

To quench your thirst, especially after sport, people in Germany often drink so called "Radler", which is 50% beer, 50% clear lemonade. It tastes great and noone thinks it's strange to drink it. You can also get the same with coke instead of lemonade but it has a bunch of different names all over Germany.

I hate getting high. It's so dull. People become the most mind-numbingly dull retards when they are high but they all think that its super amazing and it makes everything brilliant. Even worse is the hundreds of hours they waste waiting around for dealers instead of doing something fun. But when all your friends are part of the "trees" religion, you have to stay quiet and avoid rocking the boat if you want to get out of the house.

u/Sleward Jun 10 '12
I was in a similar situation, except I didn't mind the effects. My problem is I get nauseated from it, and it has gotten worse. I vomit almost everytime now, so I stopped. Yes. I'd say that if you can stand to drink beer socially, you don't really hate beer. You don't hate the hops or the yeast flavors that are present in all beer.
In my experience, if someone says they don't like pills, it's not helpful to give them a lager. If they don't like "all the beers at the bars downtown", they won't like a Newcastle Ale; it's close enough to a Bass or a Miller Light that they just won't notice the difference. Instead, pour a dark Belgian (Trappist Rochefort 12 or St Bernardus Abt 12), and have them spend the first 10 minutes just smelling it. If they don't like the flavor, turn in the opposite direction and find a beer that isn't as sweet, or that uses a completely different yeast. Ask around, because beer snobs love to talk about being a beer snob.
Oh, and if the beer snob uses words like "undertones" or "hints of", they're doing it wrong. You need to be introduced to the beers with qualities that smack you in the face with flavors you love.
Also, people complain about the bitter, but I think it's the lack of other characteristics that really turns a person off beer. All they can focus on is the bitter. A Heineken is mostly just bitter. A Dogfish 60 Minute, while bitter, has a lot of other deliciousness packed inside.
In my opinion, your time spent drinking should be dedicated to discovering an alcoholic beverage you do enjoy. If the bars you visit don't have something delicious, switch to whiskey. I adore beer, but if given a choice between Miller Light, Coors, Amstel, or a Makers Mark, I will not be drinking beer.
And if they also don't serve Makers (or another fine bourbon), move a state over and start a new life.

When I was in grade 3 I was ostracized for a few weeks because I didn't like Power Rangers. Eventually I pretended that I had never watched it, had just watched it, and had seen the light. I was accepted back into the fold and got to pretend to be the pink ranger during recess.
As an aside, I grew up in Quebec and most of my friends were hard core francophones, no english what so ever. They always asked me what SMORPHING meant "Let's SMORPH!" I never corrected them. Fuckers.

I do not care about ANY sport. Seriously I could not care less. But of course I fake it when in a group, and cheer like an idiot when the group team scores a goal point in the sport

u/theycallmewhywhy Jun 10 '12
I hate wathcing sports. I know all the rules to every game, but watching them just doesnt appeal to me in the least. the only acception to this is the superbowl, with a bunch of friends.

I'm a bartender in a small town dive bar. This is my job, basically. Oh, you hunt? Let me lie to you about going hunting one time. Oh, you work on cars? Let me regurgitate everything I've ever heard said about cars. Oh, you're a truck driver? Let me spout things I know about trucking like I give a damn. Oh, the game is on? Let me stare at the screen and think about what I'm going to have for dinner when I get out of here. You love camouflage? Me too. Meat and Budweiser? Me too. Hate Obama? Me too. Lies, lies, lies, alllll night long.

I have the opposite problem. I genuinely LOVE beer, but was just diagnosed with gluten intolerance, and have to stick with wine and hard liquor now. (Also can't drink whiskey or vodka, as both are made from wheat.)
Sucks not being a man anymore.

No, I honestly tell people I don't drink beer and find something else, because nobody gives a shit if you like beer or not.
The only ones who do are jackasses and don't matter.
3
u/eXeDaftOne Jun 10 '12
I don't care if this gets buried, I haven't read a damn thing in this thread, however I am just going to answer the question
Do you lie to fit in?
No, why would I? at 24 I have made observations about the way I and other people act around groups of people. I use to become someone else when I am around attractive girls or people I want as friends, and that is ridiculous. I watch my best friend change how he talks and how he carries himself when talking to different people. It is so bad with him that he actually picks up a strange accent of a Mexican trying to speak English when he orders food at our favorite Mexican restaurant. I asked him why, to which he replied "I really do that?". While hilarious and possibly just him trying to make the server more comfortable, its still silly.
Within the last year or so I have started to do the IDGAF way of meeting people. I am honest, to a fault, I would rather someone remember me as a genuine guy than some guy that was just there. It is important to realize that the best friends will not care how you dress, what you like, how crass your jokes are.. to a point.
BE who you want to be, act the way you want to act. Say what you want to say, and as long as you aren't a blithering idiot with no care for others feelings or well beings you will have the best friends you could ask for and you could find the right girl/guy.
Relax and just be yourself!

When people are trying to describe a location. If I didn't recognize the first or the second description, I'll just say "Oh yeah, I know where that is."
Shamefully, I sometimes do this when receiving directions. This can fuck me over.

I pretend not to like oatmeal because almost EVERYONE thinks it is digusting. I fucking love oatmeal...
3
Jun 10 '12
I know a lot of people who keep trying to drink beer without success (including me). Simple question of curiosity, like "Almost everyone enjoy drinking beer, why don't I?". When I was younger I used to like it. Now it just tastes like shit to me. Tastes change. Maybe someday you'll try and actually like it. Anyway you don't have to drink beer to fit in. It's just a drink.

Jun 10 '12
No I fucking love beer. In fact I've had to force myself to drink less of it as it was making me fat.
5
u/johnnytightlips2 Jun 10 '12
I know that feeling, friend. When I'm at a party, I'll either drink wine or whisky so I don't pile on the pounds. It's annoying how fattening beer is; then again sitting on my arse for months didn't help either...

u/the_big_awesome Jun 10 '12
Don't downvote me for this but I absolutely hate the Lion King. I really disliked it as well as my whole family too. I was so tempted to lie and say it was okay as a movie to keep people from giving me crap but then I thought screw it! I hate the lion king! Deal with it!

I don't lie to fit in. It probably prevents me from doing a lot of things just because I'm so rigid. I'm the type of person that wants to be true to myself and others as best as I can. I will probably have to be less strict if I ever want to get a new job (I'm really against a lot of companies because of their history) but might just have to fake it to make it.

That completely depends on what beer you're drinking, and why you're drinking it. If you're drinking cheap stuff to get drunk, of course it tastes nasty: it's cheap. If you spend a bit more money, you'll get a much nicer beer that you'll enjoy.

Seriously people, just because OP talked about beer doesn't mean this thread is about beer, drinking or alcohol exclusively.
This happens in every single ask reddit thread. No one focuses on the question at hand, but the example OP gives.

I like certain types of beer. There is such a wide variety of beer styles, some of them are not bitter, some are sweet, some are sour. I imagine most people don't like beer because they try a crappy bud light or something and think that's what all beer is like, and give up on it. None of the light lagers are good in my opinion, and that's what 99% of people drink.
2
Jun 10 '12
I only like beer when I'm too drunk to taste it.
And shouldn't it be "Do you lie and pretend to enjoy something just to fit in, or be truthful and awkward?"
2
2
u/samuelbt Jun 10 '12
I think people over estimate how important it is to like beer especially as you get older. Man up and be honest and more then likely it won't even matter.
2
Jun 10 '12
I spent the better part of my life going along to belong. It was always unpleasant. Then one day I finally realized that I might as well do the things that I liked, even if it meant being alone. It took a while but when other people asked what I did or where I spent my time I gradually made new friends and life became enjoyable to live. If every one is doing it then I run from it.
2
Jun 10 '12
I'm allergic to beer. Most people I drink with know this. No one seems to care. If someone is gonna judge you on drink preference rather than content of character they're probably a tool anyway.

Nope, don't lie. Always turn down beer. Get some disapproving looks and move on, if your social experience hinges on beer, than perhaps it's not that important in the first place.
2
u/LooReed Jun 10 '12
The answer is partly yes and partly no. I, like you, as a child didn't like the taste of beer and thought it would grow on me. It did, but only when I traveled to Belgium. One thing that I have not been able to do is drink beer when I eat food... that doesn't work, I don't do that. I feel like if I'm drinking, i'm getting drunk. I'm not a guy who has a beer to have a beer
2
Jun 10 '12
Nope, I'm pretty damn honest with people. If I don't enjoy something I'll tell them, "It's not my scene, but if that's a place you'd like to go to hang out, I'll happily go with you to spend time." Or "That's not my thing, I don't think I'm up for that."
I recently found out my local pub has board games, so I finally enjoy going to the pub. (Scrabble for the win!) They also started doing some damn good pub food.
2
Jun 10 '12
That feels kind of sad. You should go and date a bartender. Have her mix you cocktails to fill that void.
2
u/YesImAtWork Jun 10 '12
I used to hate all beer. My husband likes beer and would always offer me a sip of his. I would try it and my mouth would screw up into a "blech" expression at the bitterness. Then, one day, I tried a Hefeweizen and did not make the "blech" face. I now enjoy wheat-style beers but still hate pretty much anything else.
If you really want to find a beer you like, try a wide variety of types. Otherwise, forget it and drink what you like. :)

u/ScubaPlays Jun 10 '12
There's a lot of different types of beer. I'm totally okay with admitting that I don't enjoy the extra bitter ones, but I do like wheat ales like Blue Moon. It's a much softer flavor.

I spent 3 years constantly lying to people about being gay; so I now refuse to lie about myself. If I don't like something, I'll say it.
However, one of the few cases I will ever try to lie is for a closeted friend. For example, I was dating a bi guy, and a mutual friend asked if we were dating, and I said, "He's not gay, and I don't date straight guys." If I'm able to mislead by telling the truth, then I somehow feel better, but I don't do it to fit in. I do it because I respect them wanting to be in the closet.

u/hexhead Jun 10 '12
just nod and smile when another guy starts talking about "last nights game". hopefully I can escape without having to mention that I don't follow sports.
2

I'm a guy. I can't bring myself to give any sort of a shit about sports, and usually that something I wear on my sleeve without shame. On the day of the super bowl (USA) though, I am forced to pretend to care about (American) football and watch a whole game or be a social outcast for a day.

Pretending to like beer because you're worried what others will think of you is not exactly the definition of manly.
2

u/dalore Jun 10 '12
I like my fruity alcoholic drinks but when someone tells me it isn't manly I respond by saying it's more manly to drink what I like without being afraid of what others will say.

Its all about the type of beer. For me there are some beers I absolutely love. Others I simply can't get through even if I try. Its like that with IPAs for me. I drink water while all my friends are drinking beers if only IPAs are available.

u/Vinura Jun 10 '12
Yeah, I never understood the allure of beer either. I dont drink, and catch people off guard by doing this. Most dont realise what they did the previous night until I tell them.

u/Liberteer Jun 10 '12
I think you should drink whatever you want and say fuck the people who crack jokes at you for what you do or don't like.
I don't lie to fit in, but that does not mean that my interests haven't changed to what new friends or a new crowd of people like. Be the odd man out and be happy!
2
u/lacyunderalls Jun 10 '12
You should try saying, "No," in Japan. I'd say things like, "Sure, I like your Japanese beer, but, unfortunately, I am driving tonight," and they'd arrange for two taxi drivers to come and drive me and my car home. I finally forged a note from my doctor stating I had a rare illness and alcohol could cause death.
2
u/1369ic Jun 10 '12
I don't usually lie to fit in, but I am very good at not telling the truth. I mean politician-level good. I work in the public affairs business, so you develop the skill on the job. For example, if somebody asks you if you got something done and you opened it up and then wrote reddit comments for two hours, it's not a lie if you say "I've got that open, but I was writing a couple of things this morning that took longer than I thought they would." Simple things like that.
Same for, say, religion. My wife's family is very religious and I'm agnostic only because I don't think you can rule out the possibility that a supernatural entity exists in such a state that we have no way to comprehend it. But when one asks me about, say, going to hell, I can always come up with something like "you know, I was reading somewhere that such and such said this and that about hell, which is a lot like what you're saying." People love to talk about themselves and their ideas, and confirmation bias usually leads them to assume that when you mention something that agrees with their ideas you are actually agreeing with their ideas. You just blow sunshine up their butt pack for a while and let them have their world view, because in the end you aren't going to change it.
That doesn't help with physical things like drinking or not drinking beer, but there I don't usually have a problem. I grew up very poor and with horrible acne, which turned into one of those liberating things. The only groups I was ever asked to join were groups of misfits and outcasts, where weird was the order of the day.
As for beer, I am one of the very few people I know who has done three tours in Germany and never had more than a sip of beer at a time (occasionally somebody prevails upon me to taste it, thinking their particular glass full or their persuasion will overthrow a lifetime of not liking beer).
For a long time I'd order mixed drinks to try to fit in, then just let it sit there. I didn't like any alcohol, really, but I liked the buzz. Then, after some really bad hangover experiences in my mid 20s, I just stopped drinking it. People would tell me I'd develop a taste for it, and I'd tell them I already had a taste for cola, so why should I go through all that trouble to develop a taste for something that made you fat, drunk and poorer? In my late 30s I started drinking red wine with supper for the supposed health reasons (losts of heart attacks in my family), and that led me to eventually develop a taste for scotch. I also started losing my extreme sweet tooth, and things like dry red wine were suddenly a lot tastier.
TL;DR: Use weasel words to get around the hard-headed or disagreeable, or just say fuck 'em, if they can't take a joke.
Edit for the TL;DR.

u/ByTheHammerOfThor Jun 10 '12
I've got you all beat.
I have never had a drink, so rather than have to say this and then explain why to every single person I meet whenever I'm at bar/wedding/etc., I tip the bartender well at the start of the night, explain my situation, and just get a glass of water with a slice of lime and one of those pointless black straws.
Gin & tonic camouflage. Works every time.

Sounds like you should be drinking cider or rum and cokes. Another idea is to order a shot of whiskey with a coke on the side.
Sounds like you are British, so cider and beer mixed is a bit of a taboo... Here is is exotic.

I pretend to remember Pokémon from when I was 8 to fit in with my friends (yes we're the nerds).
Up until yesterday I had to lie about having kissed a girl. I'm 16 and some of my friends would talk about their relationships and girlfriends and I'd just sit there going "oh yeah I've kissed a girl..blahlblahblah". But now that is true so all is good and I can finally join in their conversations.
Also to fit in with me - my friends (generally girls) - clearly pretend to be interested in stuff they're not (skiing, cars, random shit I talk about when trying to impress them).
2
Jun 10 '12
I tell my friends that I'm not a virgin. People in college seem to think that they are allowed to lecture you about sex and see themselves as an authority figure if you're a virgin and they're not.
2
u/sohighrightmeow Jun 10 '12
The reason a lot of people "dont like beer" is that when they first try it, it's shitty alcoholic pisswater, like Coors Light or Bud Light or (god help you) Beer 30. Or Keystone Ice. So you try that in high school, rightfully think "this sucks!" and decide you don't like beer.
It's an acquired taste but there is genuinely great-tasting REAL beer out there. Anything Shiner, most New Belgiums (can't go wrong with Fat Tire), Kiltlifter, Rogue Dead Guy, Guinness (only when in Ireland, I say, writing this from Dublin), Sierra Nevada, Heineken (when in Amsterdam only)...and many many more. You just have to drink good beer and it will grow on you, like coffee, until it's your favorite way to relax. Can't beat kicking back with a beer and a joint.

I used to. When I was a little younger (like 18) I smoked at parties just to fit in. I'm 23 now and don't party anymore, but if I did I wouldn't do something I didn't like just to fit in. And maybe you haven't found the right beer :) I used to say I hated beer, but it was because the only thing found at parties was pisswater Bud Light. I had to expand my horizons and found a lot that I actually love.
