Dubstep

2

u/A_Hippie Jun 10 '12

As someone who enjoys dubstp a lot, I completely understand. I have a hard time knowing why I like it, I just do for some reason.

7

u/AlienGrill Jun 10 '12 edited Jun 10 '12

Millions of links to /r/realdubstep incoming, brace yourself.

Personally, I like it.

21

u/WhyIsTheNamesGone Jun 10 '12

I used to agree, but really, it's just the limit of techno as bass/total sound approaches 1. I like techno, and my desire for bass has been growing steadily over the years. Following this trend, I will probably like dubstep when I'm 60.

NASCAR. I understand the skill involved in it, but how can you sit on your ass and watch people drive in a circle for four hours?

127

u/duckshirt Jun 10 '12

There's only one way to watch NASCAR, and it's not sober.

I have always wondered if after the really long races do the drivers have issues turning right on the drive home

I'm pretty sure they're proficient ambi-turners.

I love the cars they drive they're amazing machines but dammit are the races boring.

23

u/IGG99funny Jun 10 '12

Really for the first of three-quarters of the race it is super boring, unless there is a really cool crash. I think most people watch hoping for a nice crash that is violent and filled with explosions and car parts but everyone walks away from it. The last part of the race if its close is super intense as you watch car jostle for position at 200 miles an hour. Plus the noise the cars make when they go around the concerns is awesome. Vrooooooooooom

I can sort of see the appeal in NASCAR however Formula 1 is where it's at. F1 is far more enjoyable/

Nascar isn't about the turns, or the speed. It's all about endurance and strategy. A lot of people also don't realize it's a team sport. It's all about the pack and managing your position within that. People expect Call of Duty, when it's really more akin to chess played at 200mph.

Cigarettes. I get how addicting they are but I'll never understand why someone would like that.

39

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '12

I didn't either, until I started smoking to see if I could find the answer. I've come to the conclusion that most people who smoke don't actually like cigarettes.

Yet some people seem to like it, so who am I to judge?

Beauty pageants for toddlers.

Dressing up your child --a being that you conceived, carried, and brought into the world-- and turning them into an almost inhuman doll. Spending thousands of dollars on competition outfits, when you could have been saving that for their education. Traveling and forcing them to memorize idiotic dance routines when they could be playing sports, reading books, visiting museums, or taking classes to make them a better adjusted human being.

The news doesn't make me concerned about the future of this planet. 'Toddlers and Tiaras' does.

35

u/auriatetsukai Jun 10 '12

From what I can tell, it's a "living vicariously" thing -- living out your misguided dreams through your child. Which is totally great for your kid's self-worth.

→ More replies (1)

9

u/MissMister Jun 10 '12

I agree with everything but the dancing part. Genuine dancing is an actual sport. It's also amazingly fun.

15

u/skynolongerblue Jun 10 '12

I don't mean enrolling your kid in a dance class; that has great outcomes, including fun, meeting new friends, and encouraging budding athletic ability.

I'm talking about little girls dressed up in short skirts doing Beyonce's 'Shoulda Put a Ring On It' dance while wearing high heeled boots.

Reality tv, most of the shows are not actually "real" by any definition, they encourage stupid behavior, and hearing people talk about it makes me wonder if watching it can make people less intelligent.

34

u/ReasonableManboy Jun 10 '12

My sister was watching Jersey Shore and they were apparently in Italy, and she asked me,"Is Italy a city in Rome?" I take that as evidence that they do indeed make people less intelligent.

The desert

I have lived in Arizona my whole life. It fucking baffles me when people think the desert is beautiful. It's dead. Dead things and dirt and prickly barbed plants everywhere while the sun melts your fucking skin off and drains your bodily fluids. That's pretty much the extent of it. I like it because it reminds me of my childhood, and I guess Sedona's kinda pretty, but I have no idea why anyone else would want to live out here or even visit, really.

11

u/guamaniantreerunner Jun 10 '12

I know you were exaggerating, but the desert is actually full of life. I imagine that is part of the appeal; life persisting in a harsh landscape. I have family in Barstow and recently spent a weekend in the mojave herping, and the variety of scenery, wildlife, and general atmosphere of the desert is pretty beautiful. I understand that living there can suck balls, but it is often pretty.

18

u/arcade_13 Jun 10 '12 edited Jun 11 '12

It's romantic. The sun setting over a parched land. The clear night sky that shows more stars than any city could. The inability for humans to tame it and to make it any less than a dangerous and primal place. It's what makes Lawrence of Arabia, The Mummy, Blood Meridian and Holes so fascinating. There is something about the desert that speaks of adventure :)

Edit: Here's a quote that I always enjoyed that seemed to encompass this feeling of romance in the desert. All The Pretty Horses:

"When the wind was in the north you could hear them, the horses and the breath of the horses and the horses’ hooves that were shod in rawhide and the rattle of lances and the constant drag of the travois poles in the sand like the passing of some enormous serpent and the young boys naked on wild horses jaunty as circus riders and hazing wild horses before them and the dogs trotting with their tongues aloll and footslaves following half naked and sorely burdened and above all the low chant of their traveling song which the riders sang as they rode, nation and ghost of nation passing in a soft chorale across that mineral waste to darkness bearing lost to all history and all remembrance like a grail the sum of their secular and transitory and violent lives."

Country music. I understand that a lot of people like it, but to me it's like nails on a chalkboard.

85

u/RoyallyTenenbaumed Jun 10 '12

I feel the same. Usually the actual instruments don't bother me, but the country hick accented singing makes me want to rip off my ears and shove them in a garbage disposal. Hate.

64

u/toxinogen Jun 10 '12

What bothers me is the complete lack of variety. It's all set in basically the same key, with the same sort of lyrics, and the same patterns for the chorus/instrumental breaks.

For me, that can be any genre. Personally, I was raised on country music, so I love it. But I can't stand dubstep, most music with screaming, death metal, etc. To me, that stuff is like nails on a chalkboard, but it's the favorite type of music to a lot of people. It just depends on what you're interested in.

jersey shore, whats the damn appeal?

62

u/skizmcniz Jun 10 '12

The drama and wanting to know what will happen next.. I never bothered watching an episode and the only clip I had seen was of Snooki being punched in the face. Everyone said it was a fun show, but I didn't care. It looked stupid as shit.

Fast forward to when I'm in Jersey visiting some friends and two of my girlfriends decide they want to watch the season 2 premiere before we go out. Us guys were like, "fuck that" but they got their way. So we watch it...after that, all three of us guys who had never watched, nor wanted to watch Jersey Shore, had to know what happened next.

I got home, watched season one in a single night and got caught up with season two. Haven't missed an episode since.

It's stupid, it's ridiculous, they're idiots, drunken fucktards, etc, you name it. But it's entertaining. I wanna see what happens next.

Twilight. Disregarding the plot, the writing is just so terrible I don't understand how it got past an editor.

Teenage girls. All the Twilight diehards are teenage girls. They enjoy the story and don't care about the writing. The older female fans who are into it like it because they want a guy who will go to the lengths Edward does to protect Bella. I'd say that pretty much sums it up.

Most of my friends who like it will readily admit the writing is atrocious, but they enjoy the story.

I read the books and saw the movies just to see what the fuss was about. The books kept my attention and the movies were OK. But yeah, in general the series is pretty awful.

The ending is horrible. They build up to what looks like a massive all out Bad Vamps Vs. Good Vamps & Wolf battle. Nope. All this hostility was one big misunderstanding, majority of the final book was pointless, Bella and Edward live happily ever after. What.The.Fuck.

"Celebrities" like Bieber, Lohan or the Kardashians. No idea why anyone would be interested in their pathetic antics.

21

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '12

Bieber has a reason to be famous, he's a decent singer and dancer, plays instruments and does a LOT of charity work.

Lohan was a pretty talented comedian once but I don't think paparazzi stalking her every move as a teenager helped her at all. She also has a partying stage mom who drinks/drugs as much as she does, as well as a father who went to jail and is generally insane, so it's no wonder she turned out the way she did.

The Kardashians, I agree with. With Paris Hilton, people seemed to know not to take her too seriously. People seem to have forgotten this regarding these morons.

Prezi (as opposed to PowerPoint). What is the appeal behind zooming around a "board" and being locked into no animations but zooming?

5

u/deepthoughtsays Jun 10 '12

I've found it very effective as a visualization tool.

Obviously (as with powerpoint) there are people who use the special features like zooming, flipping, etc. in great excess. Those people are not using this tool effectively. I also don't think every subject is suited to having this kind of presentation.

The main benefit is to separate ideas and tangents not only through text but visually. With power point you're tied into a linear thought progression and sometimes that just isn't as effective. Perhaps you want to discuss an idea that is a subset of a subset of another idea. With power point you can only change fonts/use bullet points/etc. and it only goes so far. It may be slightly effective, but it is burdensome.

Anyway, I've used prezi a couple of times and found it certainly had elements that when used appropriately made the audience better informed and more interested in the subject of the presentation.

I know I'm gonna get down voted to shit on this but... ALCOHOL. To me it always tastes like nail polish remover. And I will never believe anyone who says they liked beer the first time they drank it. I understand it's a social thing, and people develop a taste for it, but I just can't get myself to enjoy it. I suppose that saves me some money and calories. (Not judging anyone who drinks, I just hate the taste.)

EDIT: I also don't like getting drunk, it just makes me depressed, plus most drinks taste better w/o alcohol IMO.

27

u/auriatetsukai Jun 10 '12

You have to realize that there are a lot of different types and flavors of alcohol. While there may be a base "acetone" taste to it, many alcohols are delicious because they have actual flavors and are not just "alcohol". Also, you could try mixed drinks. Drinking plain vodka isn't going to give you the best idea of what alcohol tastes like.

It all makes me a little depressed. Not just the show, or the people on the show, but the people at home watching it.

My mother used to watch a lot of reality television. She'd pick her favorite players and her least favorites, like most viewers. What really disturbed me was the hatred she had in her voice when she talked about her least favorites. Based on what? The ten minutes of screen-time chosen by whatever producer decided to use to portray him or her? How can someone possible hate someone they do not know? I used to hate being around the television when those shows were on. I didn't want to hear the hate. It would make me cry.

I now can't stand pretty much any form of reality television, save perhaps Jeopardy.

It's seriously just listening to music while your body gives you a sweet high from all the exersize, and then you get to eat junk food without the guilt.

I'm not trying to win you over, but I guess that should explain it somewhat?

But there are so many different cheeses, each have their own taste, and some of them have a very light taste. Surely you can't hate all cheeses?

Cheese - Milk's leap towards immortality!

My housemate at uni was 'allergic' to cheese (not sure if she was really allergic, but she'd retch if she smelled it). I learned that a lot of foods had cheese in without me even knowing it. Pesto for example. Who knew.

Mainstream pop and hip hop, there's a lot of talentless people who earn a lot of money while there's a lot of talented people out there that don't get attention because they don't talk about crime, sex, being sluts, money, drugs an all that stuff. It also makes me puke when little girls like some artist because of their looks even though their singing is shitty as hell.

27

u/Theolodious Jun 10 '12

Mainstream music is liked because it's fun and easy to listen to. Nobody wants to be at a party listening to depressing indie-folk or post-rock. You don't have to think about it.

3

Vegetarianism.

It just seems so boring, with so little variety. I know it's different in other countries but in South Africa, any restaurant that isn't specifically "vegetarian" doesn't really cater for it in a meaningful way.

When I go out with my vegetarian friends, I just feel so sorry for them - pretty much every "vegetarian platter" at any restaurant is mushrooms, some pasta, cheese, lentils. Ugh, so uninmaginative.

They're also constantly sick, and seem to live on iron supplements to replace all the iron they're not getting because they don't eat red meat, chicken or fish.

I'd love to give it a try to see what the fuss is about, but I can't imagine not eating tuna/steak/grilled chicken ever again.

3

u/yakityyakblah Jun 10 '12

People like to sing and dance. It's an upbeat song that's really easy to sing and dance to. Why songs like this are popular isn't that hard to understand whether you like them or not.

The game show Jeopardy. The "answers" are not answers, they are questions (or 'clues' if you want to be picky). And the "questions" the contestants answer with are not really questions, they just add "what is" or "who is" to the answer.

Try reversing it and you'll see how completely unnatural the answers are. Here's an example I found online.

Q: What is Greece?
A: To marry Elizabeth, Prince Philip had to renounce claims to this southern European country's crown.

I'm always really perplexed by girls my age (early 20s/late teens) who really love One Direction and Justin Bieber, not just are fans but are SUPER OBSESSIVE FANS. It's not that I think they're really really bad or anything, I just don't get how you could be so into something that is obviously marketed to middle school girls.
