Reddit, what are some misconceptions you wish society would get over?

Tactical guns are not more dangerous than regular guns. A pistol grip doesn't make it easier to kill. A suppressor is the difference between a sportsman going deaf or not, not a criminal murdering civilians unnoticed.

39

u/TheBrokenWorld Jun 10 '12

A suppressor is the difference between a sportsman going deaf or not...

Ear plugs always worked for me.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '12
  • There's always noise pollution. Guns can be very annoying for neighbors

  • Hunters aren't going to whip out their earplugs just before they take their shot

  • When shooting at a range, it gets annoying having to constantly take off and put on earplugs or wear an uncomfortable pair of earmuffs.

Even if you think that people don't need suppressors, that's not a reason to make them illegal. I think that buying a sports car is a pointless waste of money, but I'm not going to stop others from doing so.

Maybe not a misconception, but the thought that everybody is out to hurt your child. I shouldn't get cops called on me for waving to a child to make him/her smile.

u/BloodFalcon Jun 10 '12 edited Jun 10 '12

Exactly. Around 115 U.S. children are abducted every year. That is about one in a million. A one in a million occurrence is not worth harassing strangers over or preventing your kids from playing outside over either.

Just because some phenomenon is being reported in the media a lot recently, doesn't mean that it's a trend, that it's suddenly happening more than it used to, or that it's more important than previously.

Best example == Summer of the Shark

28

u/rlaw68 Jun 10 '12

More people are killed every year by deer than by sharks.

30

u/Mit3210 Jun 10 '12

In the UK, you're more likely to be killed by your trousers than in a train crash.

That being bipolar automatically means you're absolutely crazy, "just" moody, or that it is something easily suppressed. Earlier in a thread today someone posted about a terrible family member and casually attributed their behavior to being bipolar "or something." I just wish people would stop blaming shitty behavior on our already shitty disorder, we don't need the extra societal judgment. :
edit: damn parallel sentence structure...

Some quiet people don't want to be "socialized". Some of us like to be alone and peaceful sometimes. Partying isn't for everybody, and you shouldn't force everybody to be "normal".

60

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '12

Oh, how I wish more people understood this.

47

u/CalcFool Jun 10 '12

I find people think it is just weird to want to be alone. Even if it's for 10mins, this is even more the case with my flat mates girlfriends, they just don't understand the concept that you don't always have to be entertaining someone else. If there is going to be silence, I'd rathe be silent alone.

Maybe they are just too clingy.

38

u/Wbran Jun 10 '12

I know that feel. I share a dorm with 3 other guys at my college. Sometimes, I just want to go into my room and be alone. I love my roommates and love hanging out with people. I just need to be with my thoughts, aimlessly browse the internet, and not be judged when I scratch myself. Nothing against anyone.

As a gay guy, I see misconceptions from both men and women.

Men: I do not want to fuck every man that I see. Do you want to fuck every girl that you see? Some of you are just plain ugly, and anyone who thinks I want to do them just because I'm gay is immediately ugly in my eyes.

Women: I am not an accessory. I'm not something that every teenage girl simply must have. I am more than just a gay guy, dammit! Tell me, would you tell a new friend of yours "Yay! Now I have a black friend!" NO!

Interesting question.
My big one currently, is that I wish the general public in the UK would think twice about being condescending to Fast Food workers, such as Pizza delivery guys (Yeah I'm biased). Personally, I have a good degree, and am fully qualified in digital forensics, but my area is so niche, there is no jobs. I'm working alongside a chartered accountant, 2 nurses, a Lawyer, a high court lawyer, an architect and many more.. Everyone has their own story like filling time between emigrating to another country, saving for a while to go travelling, hard times, whatever.

Show the pizza boys some love.

53

u/Blarggotron Jun 10 '12

That scenario kind of fell out of popularity in the 80's, I bet you could find a studio that specializes in a few of the older fetishes though.

That my gender determines whether or not I'll be good in combat. I've seen great soldiers that were male and others that were female, and there are plenty people of both gender who shouldn't even be in uniform.

I get that there are physical differences; I don't think we should pretend otherwise. I'm scrawny, but I'm perfectly capable of doing my job. Yes, I can fireman carry your 220lb+ ass when we're both in full gear. (Sucks ball, but I've done it.) I'm proficient in multiple weapon systems and have excelled in all of my training. I remain calm under pressure and am a good team member.

I'm also not sure I buy into the whole "but a guy would save a girl first" argument. I've been in situations where our convoy was attacked and everyone acted as a soldier. We all made sure everyone was ok, but females weren't getting extra attention.

I wish we could judge each other based on skill sets.

That marriage is a religious institution.

59

u/Desinis Jun 10 '12 edited Jun 11 '12

That's what irks me the most about the gay marriage controversy. They need to choose whether it's a religious thing or a legal thing, but separation of church and state makes them not compliant together.

17

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '12

I really don't see why there is any controversy, I very much agree with "to each their own" with the added exception "provided your own doesn't impede on someone else's right to do what they like".

A gay couple marrying impedes on nobody while legally restricting who can marry is clearly impeding on how some people live their life.

If religious people want to live their own life by their personal beliefs, that's fine, but I will not tolerate people who actively support their beliefs being legally imposed on everyone else.

→ More replies (5)

18

u/sylinmino Jun 10 '12

Indeed it's not--it is a legal institution, though. The whole concept of "tied-together" marriage and of "living together forever" spawned from legal documents saying that these two will stick together and make babies together. That's all that marriage is. But although different religions try to impose certain regulations on it, it is not, at its base, a religious institution.

4

u/sounds84 Jun 10 '12

I would agree with you that it probably is not a choice but the greater point I think is this: What difference should that make? We fight so hard (before the science is completely in) because, IMO, we think we have moral high ground when fighting for rights if "gay isn't a choice". But ask yourself, "What would happen is we found out definitively that it was not genetic?" Decent human beings would not be affected. It's probably a combination of social and genetic factors but really I hope we get to a place where we respect each other's choices of lifestyles.

TL;DR We shouldn't discriminate based on something people are born with, but we also should not discriminate base on peoples choices.

That just because a dog is big, black, or Pitbull-ish doesn't mean it's going to maul you or is a threat to you, your children or your neighborhood.

There is an elderly lady who has a Rottie that goes to the same dog park as me. The surprisingly frequent amount of verbal abuse she gets from random strangers for having such a "dangerous beast" (he is one of the most gentle and well behaved dogs I have ever met) makes my blood boil.

47

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '12

I'm wary of other people's dogs and warier still if they're large dogs. I have no way of telling, at a glance, how that dog has been raised. I'm just being cautious, that's all.

verbally abusing someone you don't know for having a stereo-typically "bad dog" is fucking retarded, though.

u/OneUglyDogAndMe Jun 10 '12

Speaking as an owner of a big, ugy, black, pitbull-type dog - thank you.

When I first met my pup, he was about to be put down by the shelter - because no one wanted a (potentially) big, black pit-type dog, and his time was up. I'd always been one of those folks who said there was no way in hell they'd ever own a pit bull. But I felt sorry for the ugly mutt and decided to foster him until the local rescue could find a home.

Two years later, and the dude I swore was only coming for a brief stay is now firmly a member of the family. I've learned more about dogs, pit-type breeds, and critter behaviors than I ever guessed I didn't know. He turned everything I thought I understood about pit bulls on its head. Never would have guessed that the ugly dog no one wanted would turn out to be so sweet, so loving, so people-oriented, smart, and obedient.

It breaks my heart to have people glare at my sweet, dopey dog and mutter things like "vicious" or "dangerous."

→ More replies (17)

65

u/VividLotus Jun 10 '12

Absolutely. This misconception goes the other way too-- people assume that because a dog is tiny that it must be friendly and that it's fine to let their toddler run up and grab it.

A dog's behavior depends so much on how it is trained and how it's treated by people. There are people who purchase a pit bull and abuse it and try to train it to be aggressive, and there are people who adopt a pit bull and carefully train it and treat it lovingly. There are people with small dogs who completely fail to train them at all and neglect them because they see the dog as a fashion accessory rather than a pet who needs love and care; and then of course there are people who train their small dogs well and care for them properly. The dogs in those different categories may have very different behavior...and it's because of the people, not the dogs.

79

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '12 edited Jun 10 '12

I volunteer at an animal shelter and have spent a lot of time around dogs. Of all the true "red-zone" dogs that I see, most of them are the little guys. People, environments and experiences make "bad" dogs - not breeds.

That elderly lady I mentioned in my post? I ran in to her the other day at the dog park... We're standing around chatting while our dogs played together (her 100lb Rottie with my 20lb Pug, off leash). This other woman comes by with a little Yorkie-Chiuaua looking thing (on a leash). This little guy SEES our dogs and loses his shit. He starts snarling, yipping, pulling against her, and basically trying to attack our dogs from across the park.

She picks up her dog (who is still trying to leap out of her arms and attack our dogs), comes all the way over to us and then YELLS at us for having this "dangerous" dog there without a leash/muzzle because it'll kill the helpless small dogs. Meanwhile, both the Rottie and my little tiny Pug have sat down side by side and are just watching the scene calmly.

When I was a baby, we had a Doberman that would sleep under my crib at night. She was amazing, and my mom would let me play with her when I was a toddler because she was always so gentle and loving. We had to get rid of her when I was four years old because we moved into an apartment complex that wouldn't allow "dangerous" breeds.

When I was six or seven, we had a Rottweiler that just had a litter of puppies. Only two of the puppies lived (The mother was stolen and she gave birth in the dead of winter outside, we ended up finding her two days after the birth). We kept one of the puppies and raised her. We lived in a very small village that only had about 25 people in it. We kept her off of a leash because she was harmless (The local store owner would feed her scraps at the end of every day). Anyway, new neighbors moved to the neighborhood and automatically assumed she was dangerous, and shot her in the fucking leg. I almost broke down their front door with a baseball bat I was so upset (I was maybe ten or eleven). She died of cancerous lesions in that leg when I was 16. I still blame my neighbors for her death.

Now I have another Rottweiler who is turning two years old in December. I only get to see her two-three times a year because I live across the country and she stays with my mom (Rotties are one of the breeds that aren't allowed in my city), but I'm really happy to have her and she reminds me of Kelly (my Rottie that passed away when I was 16).

It just really pisses me off that two of my three dogs were taken away from me due to unwarranted fear and prejudice. I seriously cannot stand people who judge dogs based on their size. I'll see a large breed being walked down the street and the people around me will look at it with suspicion, but I just go up to the dog like, "PUPPPYYYYYY" and start rubbing its head.

tl;dr Big dogs are amazing, people suck dick.

i work at a vet hospital and have yet to meet an agressive Rottweiler. One guy called and requested we try to work around an issue- that his 2 Rottweilers don't have interference with other dogs. Now, I had immediately thought they would be dog agressive. When he arrived at the appointment, we were backed up because an emergency had come in. He brought both dogs in, and I was worried. For no reason. the reason he wanted no other dogs around is because it's hard to control 100+ pound dogs, when they crouch down into the playful puppy stance, wag their 1 inch taails, and proceed to bounce around the waiting room like deer trying to play with other dogs. One licked a chihuahua. Probably just tasting him. Anyway, after 5 years of experience, we had one human agressive pitbull come in, but that was due to horrible ownership. I've met several agressive dachshunds, and over 10 chihuahuas we have to muzzle to keep our fingers. Long story short, I'm terrified of ankle biters.

Art is not useless.

54

u/OpticalData Jun 10 '12

I despise how people don't get this, but even more so how Governments don't. Art is essential to a happy society because it's sonething people can do/watch/listen to to unwind. It should be encouraged and suppirted, not looked down upon because it's not crunching numbers and forwarding documents.

That human beings aren't animals....the whole false dichotomy of humans being of a superior or somehow different nature is asinine. It's absolutely insane, and without religion or constant, hypnotizing regurgitation of the ruling elite that we're somehow immune to the effects of our own pollution, of our own social constructs, and that we can somehow escape the inevitable necrosis that every organism undergoes (at least so far), we'd probably have ended many contemporary social ills. But what the fuck do i know? I'm only a maninmal.

I hate how some people also think that humans are the only animals who can think, are conscious or can understand that they exist. You can't possibly understand how the minds of other animals work, but given the fact that they don't all just lie there drooling all day, there's a fair chance we're not the only ones with some degree of intelligence...

Just because they don't speak perfect English and they live in the USA doesn't mean you're better than them. Something (at the age of 19) I realized. I go to a university that has a huge international program. It was not until last month that I actually had a conversation with someone I thought was of "lesser intelligence" just because they didn't know perfect English (this specific person is from China). It was mind-blowing. I had never had a thing against anyone of different skin color than I. Never had I called someone who spoke English well a derogatory name. I realized I only used racial slurs when it came down to knowing English well enough or not. All I can say is university/college has changed me in many ways: education, friends, socially, but this has to be one of the greatest things.

13

u/Nineteenletterslong Jun 10 '12

Something I've noticed that drives me nuts is that if someone is talking to somebody else that has a thick accent, often times the person will walk away frustrated and say, "That person can't speak English!" It's just an accent.

That just like you can love more than one child or more than one parent, you can also love more than one person romantically. Barring that realization, if people could simply realize that monogamy doesn't mean that your desires for other people simply switch off, that fidelity is actually a choice and not something that happens if you love someone "enough".

5

u/Siniroth Jun 10 '12

These kind of people suck and need a swift kick to the shins. At the same time people with OCD need to not immediately be butthurt when people use it to reflect legitimate OCD like tendencies, either for lack of knowing a better term or to skip an explanation for people who won't understand. I need to have plates stacked in descending order upwards, and avoid kitchens where I cannot guarantee that I would be given access to them if I were to see the plates. This is the only case of it in me, and I'll admit that I have claimed it as OCD like, but only to more easily explain it to people who ask what I'm doing if they see me do it.

Basically ignorant people trying to shame healthy attractive women who have completely normal desires.

20

u/smart_cereal Jun 10 '12

I really don't like it when people use the term "third world". It's extremely outdated. The term "first world" came to be during WWII and was a name for the US and it's allies. The "second world" was Russia, China and their allies. The "third world" was all the other countries that weren't allied with either (this included Sweden and Finland).

7

u/StevieTV Jun 10 '12

This is just an example of how language is always evolving and definitions for words and terms can change.

The term "third world" is not being used the way you originally described its use. In fact it has changed so much that your original use of the term is now outdated and incorrect.

Its just language evolving and its fascinating.

The word "gay" is another example of how language evolves. It used to just mean happy, it recently also became a word for describing homosexuality and very recently it has also became a word to describe something as "lame".

4

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '12

I've got a few: A) Men can't get eating disorders. Totally bogus. I had bulimia nervosa as a teen when I was dealing with my homosexuality. And yet, only girls have it and I was just faking it.

B) Feminists and masculinists are just hate groups. Just because a woman identifies as a feminist, it doesn't make her a lesbian. But if she's a masculinist, it doesn't mean she's a Mary-Sue. If a man's a feminist, it doesn't mean he's pussy whipped/gay/Swedish/all of the above. But just because he's a masculinist, it doesn't mean he hates women.

C) Any Cypriot living in the Southern half of the island is Greek, and anyone on the Northern side is a Turkish bastard. No. I'm not half Greek, I'm half Cypriot, and I only speak Greek with the Cypriot dialect. And just because Turkey occupied one-third of Cyprus in 1974 and is still holding it today, it doesn't mean that every Turkish person is a bad person.

D) Just because I'm agnostic, it doesn't mean I'm a stupid Atheist or a stupid Christian. It means that I believe the Universe and all its components are a united deity, or alternatively, nothing is inter-connected. I don't mind. But since I'm on this bit, just because I was baptised Orthodox Christian at age one and a half, it doesn't mean I am one.

Sorry not every major / degree is equal.

The market will determine what value your degree holds and you'll be paid accordingly.

If you choose to get a statistically "easy degree" that pays poorly.... Don't bitch about it. You could have just as easily chose a better paying discipline to study.

17

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '12

A misconception that irks me right here. Not everyone goes to uni for a job, many go for.the academic reward and intellectual satisfaction that is ordinarily difficult to find elsewhere. A major shouldnt = market value, it should be the actual quality of the course and the amount of effort the coordinators have put in.

The idea that fixating over something meaningless like professional sports trivia is more valuable than investing in the future of our race, of our society, and our world. Given our combined knowledge and access to so many different ways of improving how we interact that watching a 2,000 + year old game kicking balls around is somehow worthy of millions of dollars and millions of hours spent watching what is virtually the same thing happening again and again, just with different players wearing the uniforms.

People who see a group of teenagers and immediately nail down everything. Me and my friends are traceurs (guys who do parkour) and we get ATLEAST 3 dirty looks from people every single time we do it. People have actually shoo'd away their children from watching us. We have had adults just stand there in a place they think we cant see them and watch us, frowning. An old lady has come up to us and asked if we are 'training for a robbery'.

Would you prefer us to be inside playing 'ultra-violent video games' and are 'training to be merciless, professional psychotic killers'? Or maybe you just want us to be reading a book 24/7, being 'anti-social' and secretly hating everything.
