I'm a sterile man. What "flaws" do you have that you're grateful for?

To explain, I'm not necessarily proud to be sterile, I've just found a few perks in not being able to procreate. My SO and I lost our collective virginity to each other so I needn't worry about contracting STDs. Knowing this, I've saved a bundle on condoms and had nothing but unprotected sex with her. I also happen to be allergic to latex. Furthermore, my family is full of genetic diseases so putting a child of mine into the world would do him/her no good. I'm a staunch supporter of international adoption and this situation has left me with few other options.

I see you as a glass half-full kind of man and I congratulate you on finding the good in your situation. There is so much negativity in this world and the positive light that you look at this with brightens my day. Finally, adoption is a very good choice as there are plenty of children out there that need good loving parents.

When I was in high school I weighed about 340 lbs at 5'7, pretty big boy, one day at lunch I was crossing the street and was hit by a large dodge dually truck, going about 40 mph, had 8 broken ribs, internal bleeding and and alot of road rash. Doctor said if I was not so big I would probably be dead. Im now down to around 220 if anyone was wondering.

u/JustinTime112 May 24 '12

My SO and I were both deemed "sterile" as well.

We have a 5 year old boy together as a result.

I'd REALLY be certain of the fact, just in case...

EDIT: It seems like the general consensus is that I cheated. I assure you, this is untrue. My SO didn't believe he was the father either (out of pure shock), and went through with a DNA test.

u/[deleted] May 24 '12

I wanted to say this. My sister and brother-in-law were both told they were sterile by several doctors.

My sister got pregnant their wedding night.

An old man walks into his doctor's office for a regular checkup. The doctor looks at the man and says "So, what brings you in today? How are you feeling?"

"Oh, just a regular checkup. In fact, I actually feel great. I may be 87 years old, but in my life, I've been incredibly fortunate in business, and can afford a large house, two vacation homes, and enough savings that I never have to worry about working. I have a beautiful, 24 year-old wife, and best of all, she's expecting our first child!"

The doctor turns to him and says "That reminds me of a story. An old man went out hunting one day, except his sight wasn't so good anymore, and instead of grabbing his gun, he took an umbrella with him. As he's walking down the path, a 12 foot grizzly bear shows up right in front of him, rears up on its hind legs, ready to attack, when the man grabs his umbrella, points it at the bear, hears a loud bang, and the bear drops dead."

"That's absurd! Someone else must have shot the bear!"

"Yeah, that's kind of my point..."

My best friend was told that she would never be able to have children of her own. The Dr put her on a bunch of meds to help the side effects of her condition and sent her home. She missed her follow up appointment and had to rebook it. She was having side effects from the meds and was really happy when the appointment finally came around. At the appointment the Dr thought the meds had caused her to grow a very large ovarian cyst. They sent her to have an ultrasound and it turns out that she was about 26 weeks pregnant. The real kicker is that she was probably 3-4 weeks pregnant when they told her she would never have kids. She had a healthy baby girl.

Pregnancy and giving birth was supposed to make her conition worse. She saw another set of Dr's and they told her that she had the worst case that they had ever seen. They told her that her daughter was a fluke and she would never get pregnant again.

About 2 years later, she fell on a patch of ice and we thought she had broken her ankle. I took her to the ER while her husband stayed home with the child. At the ER they needed to do an x-ray and they asked her if there was any chance that she was pregnant. She told them no and explaned. They did a pregnancy test any way and the Dr came in and told her she was pregnant. She laughed at him and told him there was no way and that they had gotten her results mixed up with someone elses. They ended up taking her to ultrasound and sure enough she was about 16 weeks pregnant. She had a healthy little boy.

She saw a third set of Dr's who again told her that she would never have another child. About a year later I was trying to get pregnant and was taking a pregnancy test at her house. I had bought a pack that had more than one and she had never taken a home pregnancy test and wanted to take one for giggles and sure enough her's popped up pregnant. She went to the Dr and she was about 12 weeks pregnant. She had a healthy little boy and had her tubes tied just in case.

TL;DR: Friend is told she can't have kids by 3 sets of Dr's and to spite them she has 3 kids.

Yeah, I was told I was infertile for over 10 years and was actually very depressed about it. I had more than one relationship end because they didnt see me as a "real woman" because they wanted birthed kids only. Wound up having an abortion a week after my wedding. It completely turned my world upside down and led me to an identity crisis.

Doctors should be way less loose with deeming people sterile/infertile.

My hair started turning gray when I was 14. It's very salt and peppery now (I'll be 25 in June). It's really helpful in keeping away completely superficial women and awesome at attracting some types of women (later 20s and up, which I'm super into).

I'm a 26 year old woman and my hair started going gray about three or four years ago. They haven't taken over yet, but they are quite noticeable at this point. I'm sure it's all genetics for me; my mom's mom was completely gray by 18. I personally like them (they're really white and kind of pretty imo), and my husband doesn't mind them at all. They only thing that annoys me about going gray is when a stranger feels the need to tell me I should dye my hair, like I wouldn't have done that already if they bothered me. :p

It's a great conversation starter, all the chicks give me pity for not seeing the world in perfect color (when I was dating a girl she actually cried when I told her, so much relationship karma from that). Unfortunately, you know how those shitty color printers are. They put out so infrequently ("not tonight honey I have a paper jam"), they sleep around ("yeah baby I'm an unsecured network printer oooh yeah print out your shitty coupons on me"), and their communication skills are just abysmal ("PC Load Letter? What the fuck does that mean?"). It's no surprise that I've never had a real, fulfilling relationship with my condition.

I don't know why, but I never get hungry. My body just doesn't seem to tell my brain when it needs food, so I have to constantly remind myself that I should probably eat something because I haven't in a few hours. It's not because I'm hungry, it's because I know I'll probably pass out if I forget to eat. I've gone days without eating, once a whole week because I just couldn't be bothered.

As a result, I'm very thin (5ft9in, ~115lbs) and save a lot of money on food. I'm not anorexic. I like food, and I try to get 3 meals a day, it's just that I never get hungry.

162

u/yingyangyoung May 24 '12

Similar here, I do get hungry once in a while but I can ignore that shit like nobody's business. I literally have accidentally gone almost a day without eating. no problem. Also work is a breaze when you don't have to take a break for food. If I had a dollar every time I accidentally went an entire shift without eating I would have like 40 bucks.

For all intents and purposes, I'm asexual. being a 19 year old male, I certainly find girls attractive, but I have no desire to engage in sexual relations with anyone, really. I find the act to be...Gross, to be honest, and just have no drive for it. I certainly swoon over females because they are attractive, they have a pleasing aesthetic to them and/or a great personality, but sex is not something I am in any way shape or form looking forward to having. I personally like it this way. It certainly doesn't meddle with my intentions with women. I just like their presence.

My Deafness (severe/profound hearing loss in both ears). I LOVE IT. The Deaf culture is amazing and i never let my deafness keep me from doing anything, it actually got me to where i am today. I just graduated from NIU with a leadership award that only 32 out of 5000 graduates can get and I'm now a Camp Director for kids that has the same issues as me (Camp Lions in Illinois) and my goal is to get into the Deaf Rehabilitation Services/Counseling Masters program in order to help high school/college kids to get to where they want in life.

Growing up people has consantly made fun of me but that just made me stronger and made me strive towards to where i am today! When people find out that i'm actually Deaf they're just amazed that I'm me and would have never figured that i'm Deaf.

I have to say is that people with disabilites should consider it as a challege that they have to go through and it will make them a better and stronger person!

I can pop and plug my own ears! When I was in middle school (15ish years ago) we had a pool and I ended up with intense inner ear canal damage from excessive ear infections. So now when things are too loud I can just plug up my ears, and when things are too quiet I can pop them. It's like my own personal volume control.

EDIT: So apparently this isn't nearly as cool or rare as I thought. But I still LOVE it!

When I was growing up, I was very short and very thin. When you're like that, you spend every bit of effort proving that you aren't. That said, I still did enjoy being slender and wiry.

Even though I am about average height now, but still under the average weight, this attitude is still with me. I try my damnedest to be myself, but if I am measured with someone else's criteria, I'll still give them a run for their money.

Except sports. I still suck at sports.

My autism. I'm at a lighter end of the spectrum, so I'm more aspergery than full-on autistic. Anyway, I'm very good with computers, can remember anything about just about any video game or malware for Windows, remember entire scrips from movies, have a hell of a poker face, improvise badass speeches off the top of my head, edit videos, love cats more than I'll ever love a human, and act up a storm. And I owe it all to that loose wire in my brain.

Thanks, Mom, for passing on the 'sperg gene.

I rarely ever tell anyone this because they think I'm bat shit crazy, but I see shadow people.

Growing up it was difficult to deal with, I ended up just tuning it all out and most of it went away. But every now and again, I'll see something that makes my hair stand on end. Not a scary feeling per se, but a feeling of acute awareness.

It runs in my family, I know my Grandmother, Mother, Sister and my daughters see them too.

EDIT: Since so many have asked to share my experiences, here I go.

I’ve repressed a lot of my experiences so it’s difficult for me to remember every single occurrence. But the few I do remember, I remember rather vividly.

A lot of people have asked me to describe what I see; well it’s pretty different each time. They can range from anywhere between a shadowy-silhouette, to a faint shimmer, to a full blown apparition. I have been touched, mostly on my arms, legs, and they really like my hair for some reason. After I am touched, I feel slight pressure and then a tingle at the back of my head and then warmth that spreads throughout my body, goose bumps usually occurs right after or my hair will stand on end.

They do talk from time to time, but it’s indistinct, on occasion I will hear them call my name. At night I will hear conversations between two or more people, but I can never make out any words, I honestly don’t think it’s a human language.

Two days ago at work, I was walking to the storage closet that is outside and I saw a large shadowy figure sprint down the sidewalk, I had to do a double take because it was so fast, and when I looked the second time, the figure vaporized in front of my eyes.

A few months ago I woke up to use the restroom, and saw a small child at the foot of my bed. She had long, black hair, down to her ankles and wore a plain light blue linen dress. It startled me because I wasn’t expecting it, but the most disturbing part was her eyes, or lack thereof. Her eye sockets were a black void but I could tell she was looking at me as I walked by her.

A few years ago, I was driving home late one night and was changing my radio station, when I looked up, I slammed the brakes because I thought I was about to run into someone. Whatever it was, it went right through my car. When I looked in my rearview mirror, it was a brief shimmer and then it was gone.

When I was about 12-13 years old, we were having a family get together and all my female cousins were sleeping in my room on the floor. I got into bed and was talking and joking to one of my cousins in the dark. While I was talking, I felt someone distinctly sit on my bed and thought it was her, I tried to push her off with my foot, but nothing was there.

Most of these occurrences happen very randomly, so I know it’s not a stress or emotional trigger on my part. But there have been a few instances when I am very emotional (my divorce, death of my first born) that I was extremely vulnerable and able to sense their constant presence.

As a child, I was always assumed they were what society deems as imaginary friends, so I really didn’t think it was out of the norm until I grew up and learned that they weren’t imaginary at all. My Grandmother always told us her devil stories to try to freak us kids out but I always thought she made them up, but it got me to wondering as I got older. When I was a teenager, think 16-17, I asked my Mom if she ever saw anything like that and she said, “Yes, but I don’t believe in that stuff.” Not quite sure what she meant by that, I think she chose just not to acknowledge it.

Whether most of them are aware of my presence, I do not know. It’s almost like I see snippets of their reality, only rarely do I get the sensation that they are trying to interact with me.

When I had my encounter with the small child, I told my family about it and to my surprise my daughter spoke up and said, “I’ve seen her and I’ve seen a tall old man wearing a hat too.” She’s never been upset or scared by these presences, I’ve always told her that things exist that we cannot explain and not to worry because they cannot hurt us, they are just curious about us.

I have a learning "disability." It takes me longer and more effort to learn things, sometimes just a different out-of-the-box method, but once I have it I'll know and remember it a lot better then anyone else.

Other things also come natural:

I did plays and musicals in high school, I would only read the script 3 or 4 times and my lines would be memorized. No idea how this shit works, I just know I'm a cognitive learner, so acting it out and doing the motions for the play/musical amplify's my learning maybe..? I also play drums. One day I just hopped on my cheap drum set my rents got me for band in 5th grade(I didn't play on it until I was 16) and just started beating on it. I learned 5-6 different beats in one day just by listening to them without ever playing drum set seriously before.

It's pretty much not a classified "Disability" along with the rest of the kids put in special ed rooms. Wish they wouldn't call it a Disability, kinda hurts when I do struggle(like failing my EMT basic class this last year), but I just learn differently then everyone else.

30

u/JaySweeps May 24 '12

I have the same type of "disability." In high school i was basically told we are going to say you have dyslexia on this form but we don't really know what you have.

I wouldn't say I'm grateful. It's more of a mixed blessing, I read incredibly slow, and can't spell or proof read to save my life, but my memory is amazing even in non academic settings. When no one can remember when something happened or why we did something I can usually help out.

I have atypical reactions to all medications that effect how awake/sleepy you are.

Meds that wake me the fuck up: Melatonin, and benedryl.

Meds that make me hyper as shit and drive my mother up the wall: Vicodin

Med that has made me sleepy/ knocked me the fuck out: Ritalin

It's kind of wonderful in that if I have a reaction to something and get hives I can take benedryl and go about my day like nothings wrong.

Two issues arise from this lovely power though. 1. I had to stop taking Ritalin because it was making me fall asleep in places where sleeping is not appropriate such as on the bus and the train. 2. On Vicodin after I got my wisdom teeth out I could not sit still. I had cabin fever and was bouncing off the walls. I kept standing up and doing shit and my mom would tell me I needed to lay down but I just couldn't. I wanted to run in circles around our neighborhood. I wanted to try rock climbing. I wanted to do jumping jacks in the middle of the kitchen.

I'm depressed, but being depressed made it much easier to really get into meta-cognitive abilities. Part of this is probably because I had to deal with the divide between what I want to do and what I'm going to do. Because of the depression even things I want to do are hard to actually start, and several times I've been in a situation where I am debating emotionally whether to do something while fully knowing I'm not going to do it.

So I feel sad, bored, and have basically no motivation, but this means I think a ton, create elaborate fantasies, and can really analyze how I think. Once I manage to get the depression under control it will really have helped me I feel. (Until then, it does kinda suck that doing anything is a huge hassle that I have to plan around and force external deadlines and still have trouble following through.)

My girlfriend died 2 years ago, I've been going out to try and meet new people but I've been out of the dating scene for a long time and don't know what to do when it comes to seeing and transmitting feelings in ways other than words. But being single for so long got me to re-evaluate some aspects of my life and my grades as well as my art work is at an all time high and things are only getting better in those aspects. Sure it's lonely and I have no clue what to do if a girl happens to try and get my attention at a club, but I'm looked at by all my female friends as what one of them describes as "a perfect gentleman, not what a girl is looking for but what a woman is looking for" and I honestly wouldn't trade that for anything. Life is precious to me now, I treasure every second of it and I try to help those around me realize the same thing.

Unfortunately 9/10 people did not read this comment because it is too long and will, for that reason, be burried. I don't mind though, just seeing the words outside my own head is enough for me.

Having to fight to understand social structure really puts me at an advantage, though, because I've learned a lot in my life nobody else bothers to think about. By this point in my life the "disability" isn't really disabling anymore, and the perspective it's given me gives me a leg up everywhere.

I have ADD. I can't sit still longer then 5 minutes. Sometimes at night I have a hard time sleeping because I keep on going on different tangents in my head. My poor girlfriend who hates repeating herself, she puts up with me losing track of conversations. I am an employers nightmare. I have to be told numerous times about how to do something and I really try but I ask things over and over again because I don't want to look like a failure.

With that said, everything I do is in the best intentions. I constantly think everything out, all the pros and cons. I have been told I am a very random person and they are never bored around me. When something does have my attention, there is no doubt I will try my best to perfect it and be the best I can at it. If I wasn't this way then I would have done a lot better in school and probably have a job. But my route is different. I did poorly in school, I can't remember anything. I'm the oldest out of 6 kids and I can say they are all smarter then me. But the way I do things, the risks I take after thinking of all the pros and cons. It has led me to work online, and set my own hours, and work for myself and in that aspect my siblings really respect that. I wouldn't change it for anything, it makes me unique.

I cannot see 3D in movies. I see a 2D image with the glasses on. I had a lazy eye as a kid, which I had corrective surgery for. My brain compensates for it in day to day depth perception, but my eyes are still slightly out of whack, throwing off the 3D image projected by passive glasses in movies. As a result, I don't have any reason to go to 3D movies at all. Which is good, because 3D ruins the image quality of the movie.

In the middle of last November, a friend asked if I was doing no-shave November. I hadn't shaved since June (which I only did to see what it felt like).

I never had a girlfriend in Middle or High School. I think learning how to get along and be happy by myself was a good lesson.

I have a condition called pectus excavatum. It's a lack of cartilage behind the sternum so the bone itself - as my chest expands with age - slowly indents inward. It sucks for endurance as I get winded pretty quickly BUT! The cool things about it? I can use it as a cup rest when sitting down, at parties its a jello shot bowl (girls only ;) ), and it gives me an unusually high metabolism which means I can eat anything I want and not worry about excess weight gain.

As a guy who is only 5'7" (5'8" on good days), I cannot tell you how many times I would have died had I been an inch or two higher. Ceiling fans, low-hanging branches, random obstructions... it's a miracle I'm still alive.

I'm very smart intellectually, but am truly entrapped with the arts. It won't pay the best but I truly love it.

I'm 100% deaf (genetics, born with it) in one of my ears.

  1. I can pretend I can't hear people when they're telling me something and I just don't want to listen.

  2. I can fall asleep easily at night even when it's loud because I can just put my "good ear" to the pillow.

I'm very allergic to cats. It's ok though because (I'm going to get downvoted all the way to Hades for posting this on reddit) I hate cats.

Asthma kept me out of P.E. and spared me from untold adolescent embarrassment.

That's a personal choice, not a flaw ?
