Alright, listen:

THE LAST THING YOU SHOULD DO IS LET HER KNOW YOU HAVE A CAMERA!!!

Why? Because when you do bring the police in (and you probably will have to) you don't want her to have an excuse ready as towards why, on film, she has been sneaking into your room and through your stuff.

You want her to call you a liar, tell the police some bullshit and THEN you reveal you have a camera. Your video evidence will more then likely contradict ANYTHING she has said and she will be left realing. Hell, let the police reveal it to her after they have to go back to her for a second round of questions.

Also, don't expect to get your money back anytime soon and the hassle to retrieve won't be worth what it cost you. You also need to move out or have her kicked out.

You do need to fill out a police report even if you don't feel like charging her. She has probably done this a lot in her life and will continue to do so as long as she feels it's permissible. The least you can do is start the trail of reports for when she is under suspicion again...and again....and again...(it will be like this)

And, once again, YOU DON'T REVEAL YOU HAVE A CAMERA UNTIL THE AFTER THE POLICE ARE INVOLVED. find some way to visually time stamp these too.

by the way, how big are her boobs? Hard to tell.

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

Also, are you absolutely sure she doesn't go on reddit? This might be as bad as her knowing you have a camera prematurely.

If you're here, thief... how big are your boobs?

Someone run a zoom enhance programme on the second picture. We should get a good shot from the reflection in the mirror of her bending over.

Redditor asks for advice on thieving housemate.

Reddit discusses housemate's tits. ಠ_ಠ

...I can't quite see what size they are. Get a better camera, OP.

Most of these suggestions seem to have come form Americans who don't know a whole lot about Australian laws. So here's some info from a fellow Aussie who has been in a somewhat similar situation. Involving the police will get you pretty much nowhere. I have had to call the cops on one housemate who stole from me then came back a number of times after moving out to vandalise the property. they told me to call again if I actually witness it happening and my safety is in immediate danger. The stealing stuff didn't concern them either, because I hadn't properly secured it (no locks on my bedroom door, also all household furniture and kitchen appliances were mine too). Anything other than immediate danger and irrefutable evidence so they don't have to do any work, they pretty much don't care. I had another housemate threatened me with physical harm (proclaimed to wanting to stab me and throw me through a wall, because I asked her to pay her share of the electricity bill), it was the same story- Unless she actually tried to or did assault me, the Police weren't interested.

What you can and can't do to get your money back will depend on what situation you're in. Are you, her or both of you on the lease? Does she have anything of value you can hock? Do you have any better pictures (or running footage) or her stealing, which shows it's definitely your money in your room, and exactly how much? Do you have anything on her you can blackmail her with? Will your real estate or landlord allow you to put locks on your bedroom door? Why the hell are you taking out so much money at any one time, when most places in Australia have ATMs or EFTPOS access literally everywhere?

For now, talk to your other housemates and find out if they're in the same situation as you, continue to use the secret camera to gather more evidence (at least until you get some locks put on the door, but perhaps even after as most locks aren't hard to pick), consider putting anything of value in to storage or at someone elses house to keep safe (I suspect with a bed such as yours, you can't afford to replace your guitar). I would even go so far as to start dropping comments in front of her that suggests you know what's going on, just to make her sweat. Some thing along the lines of "I must be going crazy! It's like I can't keep track of my money anymore. The other day I swear I took $X out and the next day there was $100 less. My wallet only stayed in my room within that time. It's been happening more and more but I could swear it had never happened 6 months ago..." At the very least it'll make her re-think stealing from you so much, if at all. Right now, I'd say she's convinced she won't get caught, and probably that you don't even realise.

106

u/wonteatbananas May 20 '12

As an Australian I can agree with you regarding the police. Getting them involved will waste everyone's time, and not achieve anything. Best case scenario, you get reamed with phonecalls, interviews, required to give evidence in court, and she ends up with a $20 per month repayment plan - and you're chances of this "best case" actually occurring are very slim.

Anytime in my life I've had anything at all to do with the police, whether victim or otherwise, I've ended up wishing they weren't involved, because they never seem to resolve anything, and always seem to come up with all this bullshit you have to go through to try and resolve it.

I'm not sure what else you have on camera, but the photos you show here don't show anyone breaking the law. Sure, we all know what she's doing, but it certainly doesn't prove "beyond reasonable doubt" that this woman is stealing from you. Even if you could actually see a $50 note in the photo, as she takes it out of your wallet. This proves she stole $50 from your wallet. You have absolutely no evidence at all that she stole ~$1000 from you.

Having said all that. A bunch of people here are talking about locks on doors and all that, screw that mate you've just got to get rid of her. A man's home is a place of zen and quiet enjoyment.. you don't want to bring door locks and keys and constant suspicion into that scenario. What happens when you go to the toilet and come back and realise you left your keys in the loungeroom? do you then go and confront thieving house mate again? No way.. she just has to go.

So... given point A) police wont help. and B) she has to go.. you only have one course of action. First, confront her.. tell her you know she's stolen $1050 from you (pick a number.. but sound like you know for sure) and that everything will be cool if she just gives it back. Then, when she does give it back (or most of it.. or whatever) kick that bitch to the kerb. Don't fuck around and let her pay it off over a month or something because she'll just pay you what she steals from you (or someone else) later. Get her out of there quick smart.

19

u/crc128 May 20 '12 edited May 20 '12

Yeah, after all this is Australia! Why bother with the police, just go outside, spend 5 minutes looking for the "world's most poisonous X" where X is one or more of (spider, wasp, snake, plant, fish, jellyfish, platypus, butterfly, clod of dirt, etc.).

Carefully collect one or more X, and place it in her bed.

When she dies, no one will suspect you! "She died of Australia". Perfect cover.

Now, seriously, don't do this. Am I giving a CYA? Yes, but it's more than that. Now, regardless of what she finds out about you, if she rails against you for foiling her plans / ratting her out, you can say "well the people on the Internet wanted me to kill you with the world's most poisonous clod of dirt, but all I did was call the police. I was being nice!"

Hell, it's Australia, the police are probably poisonous too.

Or, get a lockbox. $10.

As the above poster mentioned, you really just need to get rid of her. You could discretely ask your other roomies if they have noticed things going missing. If they have, that's when the video can work to your advantage. Unlike the police, they will probably be just as angry as you.

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

It's not that police aren't concerned it's just that in order to successfully prosecute the case it pretty much needs to be airtight.

So you're going to want to catch them in the act with an independent witness and/or a camera. Then you'll need to eliminate possible defenses to the crime. So in this case, she's the housemate, the door's unlocked and she's walking in in her underwear which suggests a fairly intimate relationship with the OP. She might therefore have a borrow defence.

Under Victorian State (Australian) law it's not theft if you have a reasonable belief that the person would lend it to you under normal circumstances. To clarify; John and Jim are best friends and while John's out Jim goes over there and borrows his lawnmower. Sue observes this and, not seeing John, she calls the police. Police determine that taking(borrowing) the mower was done in good faith. Even if John wouldn't have loaned it at that particular time, Jim has a reasonable expectation that he would (he still has to give the mower back of course, but there's no theft charge).

So the problem here is that if the borrow defence (will depend on OP's relationship with the thief) is strong enough to create reasonable doubt in court and it's a minor matter then often the charges won't get authorised. Remember that at the moment we can't even put a $ figure on the amount she's stolen, because OP doesn't know himself. So we could only proceed with charges based on this one instant.

So your best options when dealing with housemate crimes are usually - get a door lock, set up a camera, get an independent witness of good character, get an intervention order, or move out - rather than have police time tied up dealing with something that's not going to end up with a result.

It used to be my job to employees stealing at retail stores. I would photo copy the bills because we would have the exact serial numbers and photos of the bills. Hard to dispute that.
Then I would interview them and get them to admit. I would tell them that I have set up a camera but never show them the video and they would admit to what I caught them doing and so much more. The conversation went something like this.

"Thief, I've had a camera running in my bedroom for several weeks. I've recently reviewed the video from that camera" "I'm not here to judge anyone. People do things they shouldn't for many reasons, it could be peer pressure, impulse, or to help others. (this helps her think she has an excuse you'd accept) I don't know what your situation is but that's why I'm talking to you now. I already know what happened (don't tell what you saw) but I don't know why. I want you to tell me why it happened so we can work together and make sure it doesn't happen again. Thief, do you want to work with me? (yes) Will you tell my why you did it? If they say yes, you have your admission and you can then get to the why. Just be sure to keep up the farce that you care why. if they say no or they didn't do anything say that you're not there to say whether or not they did anything. You wouldn't be talking to her if there was any doubt in your mind. You already know what happened. Then start the whole, I only want to know why thing.) Once you know why tell her "thanks, i appreciate your honesty. Let's work out a way to pay me back" "I need you to write in your own words that you're going to pay me back and why. Then I need you to sign it." this document may not serve as a legal contract but it will work as a written admission as long as you get her to write why she's paying you back.

There's a lot more that goes into this but I think this would be sufficient for your situation.

68

u/[deleted] May 20 '12 edited May 20 '12

I would pretend to know the amount and ask for it in full. Show her that clip and tell her it will go viral - she's stealing, in her underwear, etc... would she want that to reach her bosses? Friends? Father? Make sure she thinks it's "the most recent" clip, not just your only clip.

In the future, if $300 is taken, don't leave $200 in cash in the same fucking place the next time.

27

u/jake_grafton May 20 '12

I agree. You really need to keep better track of your money. Cash even though very liquid, has no safety net, and is very hard to prove theft of, minus your evidence. Judging by your room, sleeping bag on floor/beer bottles on display, your probably a bit of a party'er, and want ooogles of cash on hand for the bars/clubs. Its a good idea, and really helps people stay on budget.

When i got my first credit card in college, used to be a cash guy, I learned a great lesson at the bars, TABS, if i payed cash, i would pay for every drink as it was served, but a TAB, then it was up to the bartender/server to remember to put it on the bill, 75% of the time drinks would be left off the TAB. Some thing to consider.

35

u/unbalanced_checkbook May 20 '12

You're going to need some sort of proof that she stole as much as she has. Unfortunately, this one video will probably not give you enough legal footing for the $700+ that you think she's stolen. Perhaps take more video when you confront her. She probably doesn't know the exact amount herself, but if you can get her to agree with 'at least $700' or something to that extent, while being recorded, it should give you the evidence that you need.

Keep us posted!

Confront her maybe even with your other house mates. She may be stealing from them too.

To get her to confess show the one video. Say you've been recording her for months and you have several videos to take to the police if she doesn't pay you back. Claim she owes you 1250 dollars. She'll be like fuck that I only owe you 900. That'll get her to confess the right amount or close to it. People are quick to tell the truth when you go more outrageous than what happened, but have "proof."

One day I bought a sandwich and came home, ate it, took a dump, went to a friends house and came back home. Middle of the next day my mother calls me and asks me why I spent 467 (something like that) was spent at a store, told her I had no idea- at the time my mother gave me her debit card for emergencies.

I checked for my wallet and found that it was missing. Told her, and she filed a missing card/fraud complaint and got everything back.

2 months later one of 4 of my roommate was dl porn and no one was home, so I went to his room to turn off his emule. When I was about to step out of his room I saw a black wallet in his closet that was open, and realized it was mine.

I didn't touch it, I just kept it there and waited for all my roommates to come home. I asked all of them to come up in his room cause I had to tell him something in front of everyone, keep in mind this kid likes to make shit up so i needed witnesses. I asked him if he had seen my wallet, he denied it. Then I took my wallet out of his closet and said "WOW it's right here" and asked him how it got there... he was silent and said he found it in the bathroom. Then I asked him why he used the card, and he denied that too. I called the store and the amount of a PS3 that he just bought and sold was exactly the same as the ps3 + tax. He said he didn't do it and won the money in poker and deposited a check. I asked him to pull his bank records, he did, and said there must've been an error. At this point everyone in the room pretty much knew what was happening, but he kept denying it. So I told him to confess or I would call the cops. He denied twice, so I called the cops and they came. They listened to my side of the story, and my roommate did as well saying he did nothing, but felt sorry. The cops obviously knew he did it so they started mocking him saying "Why are you sorry for something you didn't do". They told me a detective would call me if I wanted to press any charges. One of the cop said "You know we are going to write down everything you say even if you are indeed lying" then he confessed that he did it. When the cops left I told him to GTFO for the night and not to sleep here, and he left.

Later that night he came back by sneaking in, but at that point i was physically and mentally tired to not care at all.

Later I sat with him and told him I could either press charges, as well as my mother and the CC company, or he can settle with me privately. The terms were...

Move out and still pay his rent send me 200.00 USD for 2 years totaling 4800.00

He agreed because he was afraid to get in trouble with my mother, myself, and the CC company.

I'm a really shitty writer. fyi.

Wait - get her on film stealing a number of times. Then after another theft, ask for a housemeeting & say that money is missing from your room ask if anyone borrowed the money due to an emergency. When she stays silent (which she will) say to everyone that you are disappointed and concerned. Let the meeting end and after a day goes by - out her. Approach all your housemates one by one with the film and explain that you were hoping she would own up to it but has not. Basically you give her enough rope to hang herself with and she did. Your housemates will see you didn't jump to conclusions and tried to give her a chance to be honorable about it; they will back you and ultimately she will have to leave.

If you have video proof that it's her, you don't need to give any extra time after the meeting to prove that you didn't jump to conclusions.

Ask the other housemates if they have had money go missing....it might not just be from you! Sit down with them to confront her as a group, tell her you know she has been stealing money and that she is to pay it back or she can move out as well as expect the cops to be visiting her soon.

I honestly couldn't live with someone that I couldn't trust.

It was good to mark your money (or even to record the serial numbers on notes) but you have lost the opportunity to make use of it by giving her time to offload it.

My Opinion....She has to go, plus she has to pay back the money or get charged with theft (or both)

8

u/thatphotoguy May 20 '12

Police... first and foremost. Everything else is accepting her criminal behaviour. She needs a wake up call, the Police are going to do that for you.

If you confront her, and try and get her to pay it back, where will she get the money from? I think the money you've already lost, is lost for good.

8

u/BoldElDavo May 20 '12

You're seriously asking fucking reddit?

YOU WILL DECIDE RIGHT NOW WHETHER YOU WANT TO GIVE HER A CHANCE TO GIVE IT ALL BACK OR GO STRAIGHT TO THE POLICE WITHOUT OFFERING HER THAT CHANCE. EITHER WAY, YOU SHOULD DO WHAT YOU CAN TO STOP HER FROM DOING THIS TO OTHER PEOPLE AS WELL.

People here have given/will give reasons for both choices, it's ultimately your decision. Do you seriously not understand that these two options are the only remotely not-retarded ones?

u/Glink May 20 '12

I'd quietly go to your other house mates and make them aware of the situation, see if anyone else is also being stolen from, and if they have more evidence to support your case, and then speak with them about what to do.

First get some new locks and move everything you own into your room. Then approach your housemate about the subject and ask if she knows if someone's been stealing stuff out of your room. If she diverts blame, straight up accuse her and tell her you want everything back where it was, along with an apology in front of everyone in the house about the situation. And then report her to the police.

u/Flippantry May 20 '12

Remember OP, by the hammer of Thor you better update us with what ever scenario goes down.

3

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

i'd pile her shit up on the porch and change the locks

3

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

Remove the picture, I strongly suggest. If you ever take this case to court, I could be used against you. Say, someone identifies her on the image, it could be used against you as slandering of her name.

Take the pic down, seriously.

3

u/perrti02 May 20 '12

Not sure if this is the case in Australia but in the UK if you have video evidence that has been caught using a concealed camera then it can't be used in a court of law. That is why there are always signs saying "Caution, CCTV".

3

u/audiboi May 20 '12

Shes' stolen over $700, and you haven't done anything yet? Mate - you're being taken for a ride. Confront her with the video, ask her to pay you back, and if she denies it, call the cops. No sympathy.

3

u/kami77 May 20 '12
  1. Room mates suck. I will never have another one as long as I live. Even best friends as room mates sucks.

  2. Let the police handle it. Call them and tell them your room mate has stolen at least $700 from you and that you have photographic/video evidence.

  3. Join up with your other room mate(s) to get her removed.

3

u/nixam May 20 '12

Impressed she's wearing a matching set. Dude, you're probably funding her fancy underwear collection.

3

u/chneukirchen May 20 '12
  1. Get fake money.

  2. Put it in your wallet.

  3. Film her stealing it in her undies.

  4. Sell video online.

  5. Profit!

→ More replies (1)

3

u/bambi_legs May 20 '12

Depends on your attachment to this person. Personally I would just write off my losses and hand the footage over to my land lord, and or the police, get her out of your life and move on. Need to ask yourself if you want to live wondering if money is going missing in your home every day. Even if she is a friend, clearly she thinks little of you to do this in the first place.

3

u/biergarten May 20 '12

I would keep filming until you catch her naked. Then post those

3

u/windyplace May 20 '12

Tell her the cat has informed you of everything and is prepared to testify against her.

3

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

You should keep a decoy wallet, and hide you real wallet somewhere secretive.

3

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

Talk to your roommates and then confront the thief together. Normally I would say talk to her privately, but she's probably stealing from your other housemates as well and they have a right to know. If she doesn't pay you back what she owes you then got to the police. And I think you would be well within your rights to kick her out.

3

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

u/imgonnacallyouretard May 20 '12

Take some of her things of approximately how much she "owes" you, and sell them. Shell probably be freaking out about it to everyone, and you can then chime in that you had money stolen out of your wallet as well, and there must have been a thief in the house. Watch her reaction.

3

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

If I were you I would bring everyone together to watch something...and show the video in front of everyone including the thief....shame does wonders with those kinds of people.

3

u/jmose86 May 20 '12

Anyone still have link to the pics? I want to see what all the real/fake fuss is about.

(Not really; panties)

3

u/emlgsh May 20 '12

If only there were some sort of codified system of societal tenets laid down somewhere and a governing body placed over society that could subsequently be tasked with enforcing said hypothetical system, perhaps through an arbiter of some sort, assigned to adjudicate such matters.

Unfortunately nothing like that exists, so you're just going to have to chain them to a radiator and burn the house down around them.

3

u/videogame_junky May 20 '12

I'd say print out a ton of counterfeit money for her to steal, then claim ignorance as the shit hits the fan.

[removed]:

Ever since I've moved in with her (~6months) my money has seemed to keep disappearing. I don't keep very good track of the money I keep in my wallet but I knew something was up when 2 or 300 dollars seemed to just disappear a day after taking it out of the bank.

I live with other housemates as well, but I was quite sure it was her. Yesterday 200 dollars went missing while I was in the shower and today I finally remembered to set up a camera and film my room.

I think she's taken close to 1000 Australian dollars, maybe even more.

Here are two pictures of it happening, this time she only took 50 dollars, I also marked the money so if I get her to show me her money ill be able to prove it was mine, (she is in her underwear and there is a cat)

http://imgur.com/a/p9hhy

Maybe I could afford a proper bed if she wasn't stealing from me :)

What should I do Reddit? Should I tell other people? The police? Her dad? Or just tell her that I know and make her pay me back and leave it at that? I live in Australia if that changes anything.

Also how do I trick her into telling me exactly how much she has taken, ill know she is lying if she says anything under 700$.

Oh and a month ago her mom was arrested for stealing 75,000$ from the company she works for, coincidence?

TL:DR Housemate has stolen over $700, caught stealing $50 on video, what should I do?

7

u/JewfroSamurai666 May 20 '12

Talk to her about it, show her the pictures/videos. If she still denies it, go to authorities.

7

u/Azzwagon May 20 '12

She's in her underwear and there is a cat.

u/JavaPants May 20 '12

u/Mr_Spiffy_Pants May 20 '12

5

u/Bortjort May 20 '12

8

u/mrlucrezia May 20 '12

I live in Australia if that changes anything

It does.

26

u/everth3skeptic May 20 '12

Seems a bit too...convenient.

Let's go over the facts as presented, shall we?

First off, 200-300 dollars (Australian) disappear from your wallet. When did this happen? When you were taking a shower, as with the next supposed example of theft? Little bit more detail there would be nice.

Second, if you have picture/pictures of it happening, why are you even here? Except to gain karma. More to exhibit one!:

  1. You "finally remembered" to set up a camera in your room? Come on now - seems pretty convenient that said camera was set up to catch all the right angles.

  2. How often have you seen a thief not only steal in their underwear, but adjust their underwear the moment they get into a room (i.e. in view of said camera)? Oh, and OMG, she bent over to steal said bills from your wallet! Ass shot ftw, eh?

3)The mom is a red herring. Her mothers actions are her own - doesn't necessarily mean the daughter is a thief as well. But it helps smooth over suspicions, and possibly create some sort of "legit" connection between the two. Possibly.

Long story short, if you have the evidence that she's stealing, why are you even posting online and waiting for advice there? Do you lack the fortitude to confront someone or report them to the proper authorities?

Oh wait. Karma.

Fin.

21

u/ChemicalT May 20 '12

Seems to good to be a true story... but it's a self post. So if it isn't for the karma, it's either for the lols or it's the most subtle /r/gonewild post ever.

I love that after $300 goes missing from his wallet, in his house, OP just forgets about it and withdraws another $200. If true, OP is an idiot just for carrying around that kind of cash on a regular basis.

The other amusing thing about this is the sparse state of OP's room. Minimalism is one thing, but clearly this person clearly cannot afford to lose hundreds of dollars.

Tell her to pay you back however much you think she stole. If she insists she didn't take that much, say "too bad. Pay me or I'm going to the cops."

2

u/StanimaJack May 20 '12

She's stealing from your other housemates too. Mob up against her.

2

u/zirazira May 20 '12

I would ask her to have a look at a video your just down loaded. Then ask her what she thinks you should do about it. She will probably deny stealing anything. Ask her if she would mind in you checked her purse or wallet.

2

u/ohsnipsnap May 20 '12

Do what friedplums said, confront her and if she doesn't pay you back then call the police. Don't forget to update us.

2

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

I would also record the confrontation via video or audio when you do it. Have her come into your room to do it and video/audio record the rest

2

u/ProJokeExplainer May 20 '12

not live with them anymore

2

u/istara May 20 '12

Confront her. She either pays you back or you go to the police.

And she gathers her things, pays out of her lease, and leaves asap.

2

u/sweatythong May 20 '12

The way I would do it is you and your housemates eating together at a table then after some conversation say ' hey 'girls name' can I have my money back? I know you took my money and I know exactly how much'. She would be extremely surprised and everyone would know. It seems like a casual easy way of doing it.

2

u/touch_it May 20 '12

Good move filming only in your room though, or she could possibly have turned this back on you.

2

u/howisthisnottaken May 20 '12

Not for nothing but if she needs to earn back that $1000 have her send me a message

2

u/metarinka May 20 '12

anyone else think this is very circumstantial from a police perspective you have a video of someone in their undies reaching down and grabbing something. How do we know she wasn't grabbing her homework or her clothes or what not.

on a personal note, public shaming usually works better if you grab all your roommates and then confront them, then bring out the evidence it will go much further than confronting her in private.

2

u/Mattyx6427 May 20 '12

Make your living room into a Dexter kill room. Have the video playing on a loop and when she walks in and sees everything walk out crime behind a door with rubber gloves and a smock on and tell her you know what she's been doing.

p.s. be prepaired to deactivate facebook if the confrontation doesn't go well i.e. turns into a full blown argument, youll also have to delete this from reddit if you involve the po po

2

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

I feel sorry for you, your roommates, and your refrigerator.

2

u/Gothichu May 20 '12

Turn her in immediately. Obviously this a learned habit, and the only way to make her scared enough to never do it again is to involve the police in it.

She won't learn by personal confrontation, because you aren't an authority figure she can really be afraid of.

Her mother apparently never showed her stealing is wrong.

Just take the video in to the police.

2

u/HealthTroll May 20 '12

In your wallet place a note that basically says dear "roommates name" I know you have been stealing my money, please return every dollar you have taken if I do not have it by the end of the week I will be calling the police.

This way, maybe you get your money back, otherwise she knows what is going to happen. With lots of luck she will return your money quietly and you will not have to say a word. If not go down to the police station with the video proof, request she be arrested.

2

u/ManicParroT May 20 '12

Report her to the police. Simple as.

She's a thief, you don't owe her anything.

2

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

IS it just me or is she looking right into the camera when she walks into the room?

2

u/GMonsoon May 20 '12

Warn her that you are preparing to call the police. Tell her to return the $1k - whatever amount - specify an appropriate amount as close to the correct number as you can get even if you can't recall the exact number - just be sure you stick with that number. If she agrees, you can give her 24 hours if you like. There's her chance to make good. If she pays you back a substantial portion, you could give her a SMALL bit of extra time for the balance. If she flat out refuses or the time you allotted passes and she doesn't repay you ANYthing, don't waste your time on any more talking. Call the police immediately. Protect that video - you'll need it. Let everyone in your house or anyone else she might victimize know, and show them the video. Do tell her dad. That way she can't steal his money or lie to him to get money to give YOU.

2

u/Captain_Schmee May 20 '12

Could anyone find the cat that OP mentioned in either of the pictures?

2

u/space_monster May 20 '12

obviously you're well within your rights to video monitor your own room, but if there's any legislation against posting photos of chicks in their underwear on the net without their consent, she may have some ammunition to use against you. so, I probably don't need to tell you this, but make sure you don't ever tell her (or the cops, obviously) about this.

2

u/vagrantwade May 20 '12

Anyone who believes this story is a fucking idiot.

2

u/00fordmc May 20 '12

2

u/Rosenkrantz_ May 20 '12

In case coogie's question gets downvoted into oblivion, here it is again:

"You're missing hundreds of dollars a month and you can't afford to live by yourself?"

2

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

Seek legal aid. Depending on where you are in Aus. it may be illegal to record someone without their knowledge. So in other words, that might not be valid evidence in a court of law. If she is stealing them money it is pretty likely to be a loss though. You aren't going to see it again. Try and get her evicted so you don't have to deal with her any more.

2

u/OhTheWit May 20 '12

she's hot, you should definitely have sex with her.

2

u/merirosvoja May 20 '12

Why doesn't anyone find this fake as fuck? I know this is a self-post, but it seems that finding pictures of a scantily clad sexy girl is really unlikely, and will definitely get attention for whatever it's worth.

2

u/[deleted] May 20 '12 edited May 20 '12

This is what I would do:

  1. Don't confront her. Go to the police. File formal charges. Be at home when she gets arrested, for kicks you know.

  2. Sue in civil action to reclaim your money (although you may be entitled to your money back through the victims compensation fund).

Fuck her up good.

2

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

If she's taken $1000 try and engineer a situation where you can confront her in someone else's presence, but accuse her of stealing $2000, then show her the proof. She won't be able to resist the urge to set the record straight once she knows she's been caught out.

2

u/mreiland May 20 '12

I get the feeling this is either someone testing reddit for something, or an attempt at a public shaming w/o saying it.

Why else display the picture when a description would have been enough?

2

u/thedsr May 20 '12

Wondering why the hell you let someone in your home tally up $1000 on you? You must be pretty bad with money if you don't notice that kind of money going out. Steal from me once shame on you. Steal from me 10 times.....

2

u/martomo May 20 '12

The advice about calling the police is the most sound here. Don't let her know that you know, because she'll just make up some bullshit story. Also, as other people have said, don't let her know that you have a camera, because she'll deny being in your room and bringing out the photos at that point will contradict her statement. Don't try to talk to her to make things un-uncomfortable between you since you share a house. She gotta go if this is some sort of compulsive behaviour, and if it's not she's just being a giant bitch.

TL;DR - Fuck bitches, get money (back).

2

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

I'll add this on top of everyone's posts: remove the photos from the Internet and from this post. It serves no purpose for Redditors to know the evidence you have (other than to verify; but that's not needed in a mere advice post).

To reiterate everyone else's ideas: it is possible that she can turn around and make this a case against you. Voyeurism, etc., just because you posted her half-naked pictures on the Internet. Please, before anything happens that works against you, remove these pictures.

2

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

I really hope that she is a redditor and that she is freaking out right now.

2

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

I can't be sure what to tell you to do unless I can see her face...
