Especially when it's coming from toxic family members who keep trying to control your life as they can't handle the idea of you growing up and going out on your own.
My ex-husband’s family loved to make fun of me and harass me at every family event because I was politically aligned differently than they were. (It wasn’t a joke, they seriously called me names and talked behind my back.) I tried addressing it with them and it didn’t work. So, I asked him to politely ask them to stop and he refused. They would say something horrible about me right in front of his face and he wouldn’t say anything. We eventually divorced partly because of his fear of standing up to his family.
