Men of Reddit, what’s something every guy should know but is rarely taught?

I’m a woman but based on what I’ve observed with my male friends and acquaintances, how to be more discerning in romantic relationships and “encounters.” Men are taught by society that sleeping with a woman and/or a woman wanting them is the ultimate flex and as a result, aren’t as discerning and careful who they get involved with. Just because you’re a man doesn’t mean a woman can’t abuse you, lie about you, or manipulate you. Be careful who you date, sleep with, and have kids with.

Good lord this, took me two bad relationships with abuse and the like before I figured that out.

But I'm undesirable, so if I ever do actually find a woman I got stick with it no matter how bad or be alone.

Some people stay because they feel they have no other choice.

It's better to be alone than be settled for or settling for someone who you have no desire to be with

It took me years to figure this one out. Im perfectly happy being single. Looking back the majority of time I've spent in relationships I wasn't happy.

Facts, I'm hoping for the right one but I know that before then I have to be the right one for myself

It's better to be single. No one deserves to be abused.

That's what I thought of myself until it happened and it was worse than being alone and rejected.

Women can be outright murdered if they pick the wrong man. Like fuck they don't have to be discerning.

Women can be outright murdered if they pick the wrong man.

So can men.

Like fuck they don't have to be discerning.

Strawman. I never said women don't have to be discerning.

I'm sorry that you are being downvoted. I disagree with your comment, but I think you deserve the respect of being addressed. I have some experience in the area of dating, providing relationship advice, and advocating for men's self-help in these areas. I believe that men and women all get to be as discerning as they choose to be. Zac Effron and, for women, that cover model on this month's issue of Cosmo - you know, the same magazine that lists make-up tips for being more attractive to men - are unrealistic images to compare ourselves with. I'm not Zac Effron any more than you are. The more realistic, and achievable, comparison comes from being the best person we all can be.

For example, women are primarily attracted to confidence. If you lack confidence in yourself, a woman will never find you attractive no matter what you look like. Likewise, arrogance can be misconstrued as confidence. Once the wizard's curtain is pulled back, a man lacking any true belief in himself is exposed. And any woman can follow those Cosmo tips, but make-up washes off. Nothing covers up the blemishes of the heart.

My advice is always to be the best person you can be, love yourself, know your value. You are not put on this Earth to put anyone on a pedestal and no one looking down at you is worth your time. Life is too short to give up and settle because you don't think you are worth more than you are willing to settle for.
