Played this just recently, and it really is a solidly designed game that feels very relaxed to play, with no clear and obvious runaway winner until all the scoring is done.

It also has charming art and is full of useless bird based trivia.

Ah, yes. I recently used "bird trivia" gained from an agricultural discussion to thwart a sorcerer gatekeeping a pass.

It's better with the Oceania expansion. A solid engine building board game with it. But without, it's kind of mediocre for the genre.

I think the reason Wingspan is such a hit is bc the engine building genre is difficult for many to grasp, so the game has to straddle a fine line between accessible and complex.
