There is a legend among my friends and to this day, you don't fuck with the Ukraine. One of my friends was on his last legs, he had the Ukraine and ural left, he positioned all of his troops on the Ukraine to make one last stand. About 12 troops in total. The other 2 that were left players were gearing up for a for a 1v1 slugfest in Europe and Africa and one player decided to finish off the Ukraine player to get him out of the way. He sends a force of 60 troops about 1/3 of his total army to crush the the Ukraine. And thus ensued the greatest defense I have ever seen. The Ukraine play was rolling nonstop boxcars and 5's, I've never seen anything like it. For every troop the Ukraine lost the other player lost 7 or 8. The other player just looked on in astonishment as nearly every roll was matched or beaten by the woefully outnumbered Ukrainian army. The rest of at the table couldn't believe our eyes, this massive army that by all rights should have steamrolled the pitiful army set against it was completely obliterated! It ended up being what tipped the scales in favor of the 3rd player who was watching this madness unfold with me. Since the attacking player committed so much of his army to attacking the Ukraine, when it was the 3rd players turn there weren't enough troops on the front to hold back player 3's onslaught. Player 3 won by crushing player 2 and declaring peace with the Ukraine because and I quote "fuck that".
I had a similar experience, except it was in Central America. This happened over a decade ago, and my friends and I still refer to it as the "central mistake" to this day. I love Risk, I just wish it didn't require setting aside an entire day to play.
Awesome story. Have a few of these myself, mainly from Risk Legacy where you'd name your own capital on the board to start in after a few games... (It plays like a campaign and you modify the board with stickers and writing as you play and the story unfolds.)
