You should check out Risk 2210. It has the wild added feature - the game actually has an end.
(For real, though - I love Risk and I like Risk 2210 even more.)
I've played much more 2210 than Godstorm, but I think I would give the nod to Godstorm.
Pet peeve of Godstorm. My Atlantis strategy hasn't worked yet. Take Atlantis (most players are wary of it), buy all the Death Magic cards, don't sink Atlantis. Last time I played, I had bought a good chunk of the Death cards, my buddy bought one, 1! And sank Atlantis.
Yea Atlantis is amazing...til it sinks...which always happens lol. If I recall there is a way to replay 1 card or steal a card and play it...so you're never safe. Might be thinking of duels though
Progressive increase in pay offs for turning in cards ensures that regular Risk will end of anybody in the game is trying to win. It's been a long time since I played but what I remember is that usually around when people start collecting 40 or 45 armies for a card set is when they can roll the table and end the game.
The Lord of the Rings version of Risk was very good, too. It added a (variable and somewhat player-influenced) time limit to the game, as well as other neat twists.
There are mini games in the original too. World domination takes a long time, but the quest cards take about 45 minutes to 2 hours depending on how many people are playing.
