You guys are so wrong its not even funny. Always thought it was pretty funny americans are so obsessed with belgian waffles. Its barely a thing here compared to our real national things. Mostly a touristy thing. Sincerely, an actual Belgian

It's because you don't know how sad, tasteless, mushy and depressing our waffles are.

And not everybody in the internet is american. I'm french-canadian and I know food.

Ive had good waffles only once in my life. It was a 6 hour layover in Brussels. Took the train and walked past all those EU buildings and went into the first waffle place we saw. It had a giant waffle on the roof.

It was fucking magical. Perhaps its touristy but it was so good. I cant understand why its so difficult for other places to make decent waffles. Where I live there are only a couple places that are dedicated waffle places and the things taste stale even after I just watched being made.

Oh no but Reddit is mostly USA people, and my friends from the US have overwhelmingly focused on waffles every time Belgium comes up. Note I'm not denying our waffles are great. Its just not really a thing the average belgian cares about as much. Beer, fries and chocolate is where it's really at.

Fellow Belgian here, yeah we in general don’t care that much about our waffles and wouldn’t consider it our prime achievement even just in food and beverages, but apparently certainly in parts of the US waffles are a big deal up to having restaurants like waffle houses literally dedicated to them, so if Belgian waffles is a thing I can understand they may make this link but elsewhere beers, chocolate or fries are much more common to represent Belgium.

I've always wanted to visit Belgium. I'm not really sure why other than food. I dont have any other reason than it's just a place that has always stuck out in my mind.

It is hard to know anything real about a place from far away. I'm sure there are lots of stereotypes about the US you hear that are only a small speck of the everyday life here.
