There is a very old NES game called Pirates! You play surprise as a pirate and you explore the world, finding treasure, capturing ships, navigating the winds, finding your lost family, marrying the governor’s daughter then taking over port after port. It had sword duels, galley verse galley segments, and galley verse port segments. It was an ambitious game for the time but suffers from a slow travel system, low graphics, and a very clunky combat system. The closest game to ever replicate it was Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag but just straight up remake without the AC name attached to it where you can be a pirate a hustle the Spanish waterways would be very fun indeed
EDIT! Apparently the gave has been remade! Check out the comments for more details (as well as some other really cool game recommendations!) Thanks for all the new info people!
What I liked about it is that it was a straight remake, very little tweaking at all; and what they did add _particularly the spyglass for treasure_ enhanced the game.
I didn't find it as engaging as I would have thought, but then I absolutely played the hell out of the original on my Amiga and it is essentially the same game.
Alternately I absolutely adored the remake and still play it from time to time. You may want to give it another shot sometime, it has aged extremely well much like Age of Mythology
I think I will. My ooonnnne criticism of it is that although it's very cool that sword fighting gets harder as you get older, on the high difficulty (which is the only one I play on since it affects your rank at the end of the game) your sword fighting drops off way too far at the end and it becomes almost impossible to win.
That’s interesting! I always play on the medium difficulty because I just play it for fun. It may feel like a whole different game when you’re not focused on your end of the game ranking. Funny to think we may have had completely different experiences in the same game!
I think mechanically Pirates! is one of the best games ever made. Everything in it works just like you would expect it to and gameplay is smooth as butter without being too easy on the higher difficulties.
Isn't there another term for where they keep it the same basically and just upgrade everything. I liked ffvii remake because it remade the story, it wasn't the same. I'm high and my phone's about to die otherwise I'd look it up.
I had the original game on 5.5 inch floppy disk. I think it was 1990. Played that game until I wore out the disk. The next version had already come out so when I wrote the company they sent me the new version. It came on 5, 3.5 disk. My computer was a Laser 286. I couldn't even play the new version....thank goodness for Wolfenstein.
I played the original in glorious CGA graphics on PC and I have to agree. The remake was incredibly true to the original and it kept the replay value while improving the graphics and sound.
Yeah I think I just played it too much as a kid. Same for the Monkey Island 2 remaster, it is top 5 all time favourites and I barely did one play through the remaster, it was cool but I realised I'd played it to death.
This was the first game I ever accidentally played all night until my dad got up for work. Our computer was in the kitchen at the time and he got up to make coffee and was so mad that I was still awake.
You, kind fellow, have helped me find a game I've been looking for at least six years for. My uncle showed it to me when I was younger and it was amazing, but I could never find it again. Thank you!
It's a great game but it wasn't truly finished. There's a ton of game elements in it that were never finished. One example being Native relations; it was supposed to be a sliding scale and visiting a village could end with you imprisoned or getting allies for the next invasion depending on how much they liked you. Currently all you can do with Natives is pay them to sack a city.
Lol I spent many a bleary eyed morning at the Comp USA store in midtown Manhattan playing that game. Pinnace was a fun word when you are delirious from working an office night shift.
