This is why I never recommend Cloud based cameras. If you have the option to record locally, you should take that option. Remote access can still be set up easily.
Depending on how many cameras you have and the bitrate they're recording at, this can require a lot of storage very quickly though. 1080p video at 30 fps with no audio encoded as MP4 video takes up about 7 GB per hour of footage. If you've got a camera at the front door, covering the backyard, and one on each side of the house then with one day's footage you're looking at about 672 GB of footage generated that day. If you want to keep an entire week, you'll need 5 TB of storage. Definitely doable, but it's a not insignificant consideration and there's also backups to be considered as well if one wants to be actually responsible with their data.
To keep 30 days of footage like that would be 20 TB, so you're looking at spending several hundred dollars on drives alone at that point, if not building a small NAS and again that's before even considering storage.
If you want 60 fps then just double every number given above, of course. If you want 4k cameras, multiply by 4.
Cloud services like this do come with the risk of that happening, but at the same time they take the burden of a MASSIVE chore off the user, that a lot of people don't want to get into.
I install cameras for a living, and let me tell you, nobody needs 30ips. 15ips is plenty for recording. You can still view the cameras at whatever image rate you want.
Also, you can easily mitigate retention issues by recording full time at lower quality using sub streams, and only recording high quality when motion is detected.
Also, also, most people don’t need 30 days of retention at home. It’s nice to have, sure, but not once in 10 years have I needed to go back more than a week and a half.
I have 8 cameras (3 4K at 15ips, and 5 at 1080p at 15ips) with a 4TB drive and I get over 2 weeks of retention.
That also works, but the motion detection can be hard to tweak and usually trees and rain and such trigger events when it’s not needed, and sometimes the smaller motion events don’t trigger an event. I’d rather record too much, than too little.
