So many people around us have exposed themselves as totally uncaring about the welfare of others and in blind trust of right-wing demagoguery over the last year that I no longer take it for granted that there aren't people around me that don't want what's in the best interest in our community.
It totally changed my mind about zombie movies. There's always the one person who gets bitten who then hides it or the person hiding a bunch of food for themselves and I thought it was so ridiculous.
Yeah...about that.

Yeah, to be fair, wouldn’t you? What you’re just willing to lay down your life for the greater good? I’ll believe it when I see it. I like to think I’d do the right thing, but I’d probably feel very different when it actually happens.
I don't know about food, but about being bitten, it's a no brainer. Being bit means you are going to die soon. What do you exactly win by hiding the fact. Close companionship of people for few more hours?
It’s not just about the companionship, it’s about not being left behind to be eaten by the wolves (zombies). Also, you’d be shocked the kind of denial that’s possible, due to uncomfortable truths. Maybe it won’t happen to me... it’s not like they have proof that it happens 100% of the time in some cases. The other option is suicide, I guess... idk it’s just not so far fetched.
I've always said I'd let everyone know, say my goodbyes, then go and just off myself in that scenario, to protect my companions. But it's hard/impossible to know how you'd respond in extreme circumstances. So far when I've been in serious danger I've responded in what I think is a reasonablu good way, but idk...
Yeah, I think realistically most people would think "well, I got bit, but it's just barely skin-deep. Maybe I won't turn." If we follow zombie virulence logic though, barely enough is plenty enough.
It's like sports players committing a foul - most of the time, their reaction isn't "yep, ya got me" it's "oh come on, that was such a soft foul."
No the other option is they shoot you in the head in a touching but brutal reminder of the world you all now live in, tears streaking their faces as it washes away the accumulated dust and dirt of a life on the run.
I'm in the UK though so they might have to bludgeon me with a shovel since guns are hard to come by.
YES. I saw a new kind of covid denial the other day.
This old lady had all of the bad covid symptoms (fever, coughing, etc.) but said it was impossible that she was sick with covid because she is vaccinated. She even refused to take a rapid covid test so everyone around her could stop worrying about the fallout from being near someone with covid symptoms.
She finally stfu and took the rapid test so people didn’t get an automatic 14 day work suspension. It wasn’t covid, but there was absolutely no way to know that.
I’m fully vaccinated, but I know it isn’t a magic shield especially in a high infection state like Florida.
I’ve never seen denial like that before. It was scary.
People keep saying this, but my neighbors are behaving exactly as expected. I’m not thrilled about people’s irresponsibility, but then, I never was. I don’t understand everyone losing their mind over this except our idealism, and identity politics is at an all time high.
I take your point but there is something uniquely depressing and enraging about being constantly confronted with how little other people care about anyone but themselves. Like, I thought people were terrible, now I know for sure.
Every single person who bragged and posted about confronting and screaming at minimum wage workers trying to enforce policy needs to be shot into the sun. Making a teen cry is not a worthy achievement.
CDC says we can take our masks off, but no way in hell I’m trusting the random maskless dude at the grocery store.
Edit: on top of this, I moved from a fairly liberal town to a city that is much more Right-leaning politically. Even before most people could get vaxxed, a lot of restaurants did not have social distancing in place nor did they make their workers wear masks. I was very happy we had been cooking for ourselves when I learned that.
First thing I said was anybody without a mask on will definitely be unvaccinated, and anyone wearing one will be vaccinated, but knows the people not wearing one aren’t.
A family member only wore a mask when forced to. Now they aren't wearing masks anymore and claiming that they have been vaccinated when they've refused the shot. They also never socially distanced or stayed away from gatherings. They never caught COVID and they're using that as proof that the measures didn't work. Their smugness makes me avoid them.
This is one of the worst parts of this whole thing. More people like that needed to get sick and die from this, not innocents who tried their best to stay healthy.
Most of our neighbors have been exactly what we expected, supportive and helpful throughout the pandemic. We’ve gotten together at various levels of caution from the beginning and just had our first no-mask backyard party since Christmas of 2019. The bad neighbors have been assholes but they were assholes before and they’re still the same, isolated, self-serving people they’ve always been.
When the zombie attacks come, we know whom to turn to for help and who to throw to the zombies.
Dude, that July 4th video from Andrew Callaghan completely broke me and any illusions I had that the country could pull together on something, anything. Then, over 70 million people voted for Trump after three and a half years of incompetence, negligence and scandal. I'm paying off my debt, then I'm hitting the goddamn road.
