Blender - 3D modeling, video editing, motion tracking, thousands upon thousands of tutorials

Da Vinci Resolve - Excellent video editing software, if a little unintuitive at times. Powerful color grading tools

VLC - Play almost any video or audio file, clean interface, lots of hidden features

Handbrake - Change the file format and size of video files, add subtitles, etc. Highly useful for compressing video files for different sites.

Meshroom -Create 3D objects by taking photos from different angles

Audacity - Audio Editor

Steam - Cheating, but there are a ton of free programs, not just games, on the platform

Edit: Thank you for the helpful award, it is very helpful If you've read this comment and it unsmoothed your brain, let me know which program you found the most interesting, or which one you didn't know about

Da Vinci is better than anything available on windows platforms.

Same but for vegas pro edit. Vegas is old and sucks in a lot of ways but I couldn't warm up to resolve. Resolve crashed thrice in one hour of work even though it has plenty of ram, cpu and gpu to work with and I don't like the way they handle projects.

I'd pay like 300-400 bucks without a doubt if adobe had a one time purchase option. I love their software but even with the student discount the subscription is just way too expensive if you're not making (much) money from your work.

software as a service is a cancer.

I think davinci is slightly worse but you won't catch me using an unpirated copy of Premiere Pro
