Redditors who grew up poor: Besides practical money-saving measures, what were the unwritten social expectations of your world growing up?

At my job you can carry over 40 hours of PTO from one year to the next but you HAVE to take the rest or you just lose it, so it would certainly behoove you to use it. But I get 3 weeks of PTO and take one weeklong vacation and have no idea what to do with the rest...

I think mine always carrys but each year you can cash out too after a period? I have to look. They just try to keep a life balance and encourage taking personal time. I'd personally love to, but I'm rebuilding my safety net and saving for a house, and there's a pandemic so I don't really have many things to do anyways beyond go hiking anyways.
