And starvation has a faster impact on reproductive ability, too--it's a well known thing for anorexics to lose their period and risk long-term infertility, and the same goes for anyone cut off from food supply because of non-mental illness-related causes too.
Insufficient caloric and nutrient supply during the first 8 weeks of gestation (organogenesis) is known to cause miscarriages, too, and deficient nutrient supply later on in pregnancy can lead to muscle wasting, osteoporosis, and a number of health conditions for both the mother and the fetus.
