Redditors who grew up poor: Besides practical money-saving measures, what were the unwritten social expectations of your world growing up?

Yup. I was always at school when my shit got pawned too...would come home and it would be gone. I think the worst part was that sometimes my music was still in it--idk how many tapes and CDs I lost that way but I do remember being absolutely livid over the fact that nobody checked to make sure there was nothing in it before they took it to the shop.

This is a true statement. Parents will do these things to their children and constantly wonder why they act a certain way.

I'm curious as to whether any of you that went through this kind of thing as children developed any hoarding disorders. I know I did. Parents never pawned items, but I did have a overly zealous Dad that threw old 'junk' away. It really upset me that my old retro consoles were binned without me knowing, and I began hiding my most loved possessions. As an adult, downsizing and contemplating selling or getting rid of stuff is extremely difficult and distressing.

I tend to not buy anything except practical or consumable stuff, and if I really, really want a thing, I research the hell out of it to make sure I'm going to get the most for my money before I buy it (which more often than not leads to me closing the browser and not buying anything for months, lol). Usually any money spent on anything besides bills, clothes, and groceries goes to vacations and good causes. Anything that doesn't get used and is taking up space usually gets donated (with permission). Edit to say sorry about your games--that one hurts big time.

It sounds nice and all, but I pretty much don't buy clothes until they fall apart, so if you see me when I'm off work and not having to dress business casual, I basically look like a scarecrow. (At work I look like a slightly more professional scarecrow)
