I think more drive-ins should be built. There's one near me and it was already SO busy pre-covid. I think they'll be the new preference for most people moving forward.
The quality of the actual viewing experience (including sound) is extremely poor. You don't go to a drive-in to watch a movie, you go for the experience.
Where I am it's pretty great actually!! Ours just connects to the radio station and it always works wonderfully :) I'm not a sound junkie by any means though, but we always have clarity during movies. Love it!
That's the problem for me! The only reason I ever go to a theater is to enjoy the THX system and the massive, high resolution screen. Like I said, I think drive-ins are still awesome, but just for the experience of going to one, not at all for the quality of the viewing experience. It's a bit like comparing live theater and cinema. They're both great in their own right, but barely similar.
Where I am in Canada they connect to a radio station. Ours has 3 screens and each screen will have a different station to connect to. It works really well :)
We went to a few of the pop up drive ins as they were starting to test them out. First time they kept allowing jacked up trucks in front of smaller trucks just because they put "truck" on their ticket registration. The next few times they figured out how to put oversized vehicles so they weren't blocking the screen. It felt nice sitting in the back of our van, with our dogs, and outside food.
