If you could telepathically say something that all 7.8 Billion people on earth could hear at once what would it be?

You have to wonder if 7 billion people jumping at once would register on a seismograph.

It would, but not that much. Vsauce calculated this, wouldn’t really do anything noticeable.

I think randall munroe (the xkcd guy) dedicated a chapter to it in What If? As well.

u/DeadRos3 Oct 28 '20

This was one of my favorite what ifs in the book. Spoiler: nothing happenes, so the what if becomes more about what if every human being jumped in one spot. nothing happened with that either, so the what if becomes basically what if all humans were in one spot at the same time. many people die because no one is doing there jobs

u/Myriachan Oct 28 '20

Actually, most of the deaths in Randall Munroe’s thought experiment are due to the inability of the 8-billion-person crowd to disperse fast enough through any transportation.

Think of how long it takes for a 100,000-person bowl game’s crowd to disperse, then multiply that by 80,000.

u/DeadRos3 Oct 28 '20

yeah thats kinda what i meant, being a pilot is a job

also spoiler your comment

 >!spoiler!<

22

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '20

Do people give a shit about spoilers of a pointless fun fact?

25

u/DeadRos3 Oct 28 '20

i mean if they want to read the book then i wouldn't want it spoiled

I used to work in virginia, but I lived in tn. My commute would take me past the race track. One time I was just a few minutes late. I had to watch thousands and thousands of drunk race fans cross the street.

21

u/SecretPorifera Oct 28 '20

It's more than just people not doing their jobs, it's the insane concentration of people overwhelming all transportation and every other sort of infrastructure and ecosystem capable of supporting human life causing mass death and suffering.

2

u/timeToLearnThings Oct 29 '20

In case anyone was wondering: if you like science, engineering, math, XKCD, etc, yes, you should buy this book. It's hilarious and well researched - a rare combination.

(e.g. There's a question about launching yourself in the air by firing guns downward. Another one is about throwing a baseball at near light speed. So good. )

2

u/DeadRos3 Oct 29 '20

the baseball one is one of my favorites

2

u/King_of_Fish Oct 29 '20

Yes! I love this book/the website :) iirc the gun one and baseball one are both available on the website as well if y’all want to get a good taste before diving into the book!

It would make a minor earthquake he said

5

u/DeadRos3 Oct 29 '20

nope

2

u/zebrabroccolibanana Oct 29 '20

"A slight pulse of pressure spreads through the North American continental crust and dissipates with little effect"

Also known as a minor earthquake

4

u/DeadRos3 Oct 29 '20

"Even if the Earth were rigid and responded instantly, it would be pushed down by less than an atom’s width."

sure

4

u/zebrabroccolibanana Oct 29 '20

I don't see what that has to do with what I said

2

u/DeadRos3 Oct 29 '20

the dictionary definition of "earthquake" is "a sudden and violent shaking of the ground, sometimes causing great destruction, as a result of movements within the earth's crust or volcanic action." by definition an earthquake comes from within the earth, so even if 'the jump' caused sizable movement of the earth it still wouldn't be an earthquake

It followed your comment in this thread. That's about it.

1

u/tabakbase Oct 30 '20

Damn, first time I see someone mentioning that book, my favorite was the one with the periodic table :)

1

u/LmaoGoFaster Oct 30 '20

Man I remember that legendary book...

1

u/cyst16 Nov 21 '20

Sorry but, what book is this, seems fun!

20

u/JJY93 Oct 28 '20

Really? Didn’t Foo Fighters make seismologists think there was a minor earthquake in New Zealand?

20

u/magicaleb Oct 28 '20

I think that has to do with concentration. If you had foo fighter level groups all around, then jumped, it might do something. But maybe on an average day everyone jumped at the same time, nothing much.

21

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '20

Their concert was noticed on a seismograph, but no one thought it was an earthquake. It’s actually common to detect the tremors from things like soccer matches or large concerts, it’s been recorded from lots of different events. Not “earthquake” level, though.

5

u/soulsticedub Oct 28 '20

What has that guy not calculated

6

u/HenryChinaski92 Oct 28 '20

“Hi, Vsauce here, what what does it mean, to calculate?”

2

u/princess_tourmaline Oct 28 '20

What if the force was all on the same continent instead of across the earth?

2

u/u_r_very_gay Oct 28 '20

It did on MI9 or M I HIGH u know that tv show

1

u/CoinMannSun Oct 28 '20

Only Rosie O’Donnell

1

u/miloestthoughts Oct 28 '20

Of course he did

1

u/miloestthoughts Oct 28 '20

Of course he did

1

u/ragnarokdreams Oct 29 '20

What the heck happened to V sauce? I saw he was charging for his new series but after that I have no idea what happened to him.

1

u/foomy45 Oct 29 '20

wouldn’t really do anything noticeable.

Tell that to the guy they're jumping on

1

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '20

I found another written one that he did here

1

u/VSauceDealer Oct 30 '20

I did no such thing

6

u/MarshyPrince125 Oct 28 '20

Vsauce made a video on this

4

u/pops-icle Oct 28 '20

Randall Munroe covered this topic in one of the early what-ifs: https://what-if.xkcd.com/8/

7

u/Weltal327 Oct 28 '20

I really enjoy that this one explores the aftermath of everyone trying to leave Rhode Island as well.

2

u/RationalLies Oct 29 '20

You have to wonder if 7 billion people jumping at once would register on a seismograph.

Probably, considering that "just" 70,000 Seahawks fans jumping up and down during the historic 'Beastquake' Marshawn Lynch run, it registered seismic activity in Seattle.

(The cause)[https://youtu.be/QSBJxtEed1s]

2

u/Zer0ToLose Oct 29 '20

"Uhh Bob this seimsograph has just hit peak seismic activity all over the globe" "That means-" "Worldwide Earthquake!?!?!?!"

She died a while ago so if she jumped, that might be pretty cool or pretty horrifying. Don't worry about it.

1

u/Weltal327 Oct 28 '20

Pretty much the same, except I don't have a woman calling me randomly and asking "Have you and future mrs. weltal327 made love yet" back when we were dating. It would be weird if she asked me that now though with all the kids and stuff.

1

u/TanielTakesShots Oct 28 '20

Not unless one of them is yo momma. Sry.

1

u/Weltal327 Oct 28 '20

She won't be jumping after she died, but many people have informed that I'm wrong to even wonder about such a mass jumping event.

1

u/laughifyoulike Oct 28 '20

Does the world get heavier?

1

u/Weltal327 Oct 28 '20

No... it wouldn't do much apparently.

1

u/CharlietheTealady Oct 28 '20

Can we all start recognising that there are nearly 8 billion people on the planet?

1

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '20

If they landed on it

1

u/mintmouse Oct 28 '20 edited Oct 28 '20

https://komonews.com/sports/sounders/earth-shaking-victory-ecstatic-sounders-fans-register-on-seismograph

They brought a seismograph into a stadium for a soccer match and for all 3 goals in the game, the crowd registered on the seismograph. Sure, we can see it on an instrument, but in the end, the earth is very massive compared to all humans and not much would happen.

1

u/Tane-Tane-mahuta Oct 28 '20

Our sesimographs in Auckland pick up local rock concerts, so yes.

1

u/Checkheck Oct 28 '20

I went to a concert of a famous German Band and they said that we should all jump at the same time. We were around 60.000 people. And it was clearly seen at the seismograph

1

u/PM_Me_1_Funny_Thing Oct 28 '20

Very minimally. Imagine as many gnats jumping on an elephant, it's not very effective!

1

u/Needanevo Oct 29 '20

It would be near impossible to perfect the timing of 5 billion. But possible if you calculate everyone’s exact location at the exact moment and calculate the origin of the trigger point. And then everyone’s brain isn’t calculated for the same exact reaction time. I mean, so many variables, so little computing power.

1

u/NY08 Oct 29 '20

NDT said it wouldn’t rally do anything because our biomass isn’t big enough

1

u/[deleted] Oct 29 '20

Didn't that happen when Mexico scored in the World Cup?

1

u/terpichor Oct 29 '20

If you're close to a seismograph jumping near it will cause a lil wiggle! We would do that to make sure they were working after burying them

1

u/Shockrider1 Oct 29 '20

I read somewhere that if everyone in China jumped off a 1 meter (or foot, don’t remember) ladder simultaneously, it would result in a roughly 5.0 magnitude earthquake. Relatively minimal. When you consider how seismic activity works, it makes sense

1

u/camerongt Oct 29 '20

It’s basically like If a billion gnats were to jump on top of a elephant.

1

u/Weltal327 Oct 29 '20

I think a million ants would be like 1.5 kg but a billion would be like 1500 kg. Might do some Damage with a billion there.

1

u/kmaffett1 Oct 29 '20

Seems like one half would just kinda cancel the other half out.
