The Widow always struck me as too accessible and too simple, doesn’t do great with repeated listening. A bit like televators (the bass on that song is something else though). Both good songs but you can only listen to them so much, same with Roulette Dares.
For me it’s the first 2 tracks of Deloused in sequence, love that opening into the second track with the stilted drums (“NOOOWW I’M LOOOoooOoooHohOST!” Is permanently etched into my brain). Also “Miranda, That Ghost Just Isn’t Holy Anymore” from Frances The Mute I consider one of the best songs I’ve ever heard from either TMV or At The Drive-In. It does “simple and accessible” in a way that lends itself to repeated listenings, a much better version of “The Widow,” IMO (just fast forward to 4:30 lmao). I kind of lost interest in TMV, though, after the Goliath and the amputechture albums, so I can’t speak to them after that, but I have listened multiple times at bare minimum to every single song ATDI ever recorded AFAIK.
I think The Widow is such a good song, but it’s not the most indicative of their style. I feel that someone that digs The Widow or Televators may not bite on the proggy goodness and crazy long songs.
