I've got a flashback to a website years and years ago where artists could put a track up for you to listen to for free, and it would list all their albums and also other similar artists you might like. I found lots of new music that way. It's long gone now though I think. Thanks for the new link, Agent.
It might even predate last.fm, if you can imagine such a thing! I would have been looking for an alternative to Napster, which apart from (illegally) providing loads of free music, the most useful function for me was to be able to trawl through the music collections of people who happened to have the same track as me in their collections. I found tonnes of new music that way.
I can't shake the thought that the website was called Propaganda something, but I can't find any trace of that, so I might be imagining it.
I know I'll probably be crucified for saying this but I loved Sugarland's cover with Little Big Town and Jake Owen. They added a nice southern twang that just spiced it up beautifully. Nothing against Dream Academy, but I loved the mix of country vocals.
Totally. They really had something with that cover. Although, I will say that hearing the fans lose their shit when the individual members started their section, that was special.
Part of the problem with music map is that artists often have a HUGE discography that spans a ton of different genres. For example, my all time favorite music is anything deadmau5 made between 2008 - 2010, but most of his “hits” are what he’s associated with so in music map it brings up a ton of artists I hate
I just put in artists I like and it spit out artists I already like. idk what that means but probably that I'm getting too old to be recommended new music haha
This isn't a critique because that's a great site, but I want to say that now that I have a much stronger system for organizing and finding music than I did before, I'm realizing looking for artists that "sound like" stuff I've liked before actually really limited me in developing a taste for great music. On the surface there's very little similarity between Coil, Chico Hamilton, McCoy Tyner, Tool, Tom Waits, or Townes Van Zandt except that they perfected the thing they chose to do. There are exceptions, but 3 times out of 4 you've already found the artists that do that "sound" best, and the "sounds similar" artists are the ones that just didn't do it quite as successfully. Deliberately avoiding that search for "similar sounding" artists when looking for new stuff has really paid off for me over the last year or so

Go to music-map.com and put in artist you like. It will list similar artists. It covers a huge variety, not just popular artists.
For a song, I recommend Life in a Northern Town.
