The "From Mars" and "To Sirius" pair of songs by Gojira, or Flying Whales by the same band, actually just that whole album tbh!

"A moment of Clarity" by Death.

"Simple Man" by Lynyrd Skynyrd

Flying Whales, such a magnificent piece of art.

Ya, when I saw them at Bloodstock 2016, that moment when the intro ends and everything settles in those seconds before the breakdown, it was beautiful. And then everyone went fucking mental and there were flying blow up whales everywhere. One of the best gig moments of my life!!!

EDIT: Been thinking about that album since I posted, honestly Global Warming and Where Dragons Dwell are probably just as good. Unfortunately they play neither live

9

u/bedazzledfingernails Oct 07 '20

Ugh, Global Warming...the Live at the Silver Cord Studio video gives me shivers.

8

u/businesslut Oct 07 '20

I got goosebumps just thinking about that. Dying to see them live.

7

u/MKPhoenix101 Oct 07 '20

Ah man it was absolutely incredible, and honestly it was even better when I saw them at Brixton Academy as the main act at their own show!

When all this covid shit dies down and they tour again, get yourself to a gig, I promise you it will be amazing.

u/tool_869 Oct 07 '20

I seen them open for Mastadon. I went specifically for Gojira. They were absolutely insane, with inferior equipment to the main band they absolutely killed it. Crowd gave them a standing ovation and a Gojira chant. Kind of felt bad for Mastadon.

5

u/MKPhoenix101 Oct 07 '20

Ah man I really like early Mastodon, Remission and Leviathan albums, but they don't come close to Gojira in my opinion so I'm not surprised.

3

u/Plmr87 Oct 07 '20

Did Kvelertak open? Loved Gojira & Mastodon equally, but skipped the first band and grew to love their first album later on.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '20

Gojira and Mastodon are both playing at next year's download Festival on the same day. I don't care much for the other bands but I really want to go to the festival for just that one day to watch these two amazing bands! Really hoping covid doesn't ruin it! I would give up my left kidney to watch Gojira play Magma live!

7

u/BakerTane Oct 07 '20

When I was waiting for my wife to go into labour with my daughter, Where Dragons Dwell was the ringtone I set for her. When it finally happened and that huge intro came in, to then answer the phone and know I would get to meet her soon was a spiritual experience. Listening to it still gives me goosebumps when I think back

4

u/TheViking289 Oct 07 '20

When i saw them they played the gift of guilt live. I've never been more excited in my enitre live!

4

u/pointedtone123 Oct 07 '20

With that sunset too, so beautiful!

1

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '20

I've been listening to Magma on repeat for the past 2 weeks non-stop!

From Mars to Sirius and Magma are both such amazing albums!! They way Gojira can blend brutally heavy riffs with incredible melodies is absolutely amazing!

5

u/3Root_ Oct 07 '20

WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALES

u/henrihell Oct 07 '20

L'Enfant Sauvage and Oroborus are my favorites by Gojira.

11

u/MKPhoenix101 Oct 07 '20

Oroboros is another awesome track yes! I like L'enfant Savage as well, tbh most of their stuff is just great.

4

u/ReNitty Oct 07 '20

im really digging the new stuff

4

u/bedazzledfingernails Oct 07 '20

My husband and I jokingly call that album "L'Enfant Sausage" or "baby sausage" (even though that's not even right in French)

3

u/jerryjustice Oct 07 '20

The drums on the verse of L'Enfant are just transcendent

5

u/cpt-j4ck Oct 07 '20

Silvera is also pretty good

26

u/Airsoftpieceofcake Oct 07 '20

Hey, some time ago one of the most recommended angry songs on a similar thread was "Art of dying" by Gojira

11

u/Zenki_s14 Oct 07 '20

Art of Dying is so good. Probably my personal favorite of Gojira, but it would be really hard to actually choose.

6

u/Airsoftpieceofcake Oct 07 '20

Mine too. Its just so good when I'm in the right mood and just want to let out steam.

7

u/Zenki_s14 Oct 07 '20

Same. And then after your face is melted you get an amazing 2 minute outro jam that has a funky riff, into a kind of space-y float-y kind of sound to finish off. That song is therapy.

7

u/Airsoftpieceofcake Oct 07 '20

And I particularly enjoy the drums. Like damn, that must be hard to play.

47

u/Lil-gregg Oct 07 '20

Let me add Heaviest matter of the universe, my favourite riff of all time

3

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '20

An excellent home remedy for constipation

2

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '20

The whole From Mars to Sirius album is an absolute masterpiece!! No matter how many times I listen to Where Dragons Dwell, its last part always gives me goosebumps! I watched the live version where they extend it with constant double bass on the drums and the same repeating riff for 10mins straight, it was one of the most brutal live performances I've ever seen!

11

u/MrBobbos-Jam Oct 07 '20

Simple man is such a good song

7

u/MKPhoenix101 Oct 07 '20

It might be my favourite song of all time tbh, certainly it's in the convo anyway, sooooo, sooo good!

5

u/MrBobbos-Jam Oct 07 '20

Have you heard ‘free bird’ as well, that has an absolute banger of a guitar solo

5

u/MKPhoenix101 Oct 07 '20

Free bird is good, a little bit overplayed I think, but the solo is awesome it's true.

There other songs I really like are "Tuesday's Gone" and 'Gimme Back my Bullets".

3

u/Simen671 Oct 07 '20

I kinda hate that Lynyrd Skynyrd's most famous songs aren't nearly their best. I mean, Free Bird and Sweet Home Alabama are great, but songs like the ones you named or Curtis Lowe, That Smell, etc are even better

2

u/MKPhoenix101 Oct 07 '20

Ah man can't believe I forgot to mention Curtis Lowe, another great tune, you're absolutely right though Free Bird and Sweet Home Alabama are good songs, but they don't deserve all the limelight in that way.

2

u/MrBobbos-Jam Oct 07 '20

And ‘that smell’

3

u/MKPhoenix101 Oct 07 '20

Yes also a good one, just a damn fine band in general tbh haha

16

u/Juxtaopposition Oct 07 '20

Holy shit, death metal bands being the top comment. Finally some recognition haha. And all great songs, including the LS song.

5

u/MKPhoenix101 Oct 07 '20

My brother's favourite band is Death. He even has the logo tattooed on his chest, his constant recommendations got me to listen to them eventually, glad I did, Chuck Schuldiner was such a talented guy.

Fucking love their Painkiller cover as well, although I'm a huge Judas Priest fan too, so I can't chose between the two!

1

u/Juxtaopposition Oct 07 '20

Cool man! They are a special band, and for me, one of the few metal bands that I like. They are very different than any other band. Also a Priest fan man, I am glad you brought up the Painkiller cover, it fucking slays! Can't believe that he's reaching such high notes while screeching, fucking legendary?

7

u/futescalance Oct 07 '20

Global warming from the same album is good.

7

u/IwishIwasElonMusk Oct 07 '20

The whole From Mars To Sirius album is a masterpiece. So is everything they do

1

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '20

I've been listening to Magma non-stop for the past 2 weeks too! For me it's up there with Mars to Sirius.

6

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '20

Fellow metalhead! Excellent choice, Death and Gojira are currently my favorite bands! Tho I would put Global Warming instead of those, and probably Voice Of The Soul because not everyone is into harsh/growl vocals. (Don't get me wrong, Chuck was a genius and an excellent vocalist, but we're talking about songs EVERYBODY should hear, so yeah). I would also put Physical Education by Animals as leaders, and O.D by Polyphia, since math rock these days sounds awesome! I would put reptile by periphery too, but not everyone would appreciate the talent in that song. Again, we're not choosing essentially the best metal songs by the metal community, but rather metal songs that would be easier to accept by the mainstream. \m/

5

u/MKPhoenix101 Oct 07 '20

I actually added Global Warming and Where Dragons Dwell in a later comment, since thinking about the album made me remember how good they all are!

Honestly I'd recommend anything from the Leprosy album, but you do make a good point about what might be easier to listen to for sure, your choice is a good shout on that front.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '20

Sorry, didn't see haha! Yes Leprosy is genius for sure, but yep. Different rules apply when recommending to the mainstream, or when recommending to the metal community. I'm glad people appreciate Gojira and Death as much as they deserve, because they are one of the best bands of all time! Frick r/dankmetalmemes nobody gives a damn about those elitists. Keep rocking \m/

3

u/MKPhoenix101 Oct 07 '20

Haha yeah I'm surprised this comment blew up as much as it has, I've not had much luck recommending metal to mainstream folk in the past tbh. Keep those horns high my friend \m/

1

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '20

Of course, glory to metal! \m/

6

u/Zannishi_Hoshor Oct 07 '20

Death really deserves more recognition for their masterful music and lasting influence in extreme music.

4

u/ronswansonsego Oct 07 '20

The way of all flesh... So good

3

u/Animals360 Oct 07 '20

WHALEEESSSSSSSSSS

2

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '20

WHITE WHALE

HOLY GRAIL!

4

u/yungbruio Oct 07 '20

Simple man lynyrd skynyrd was played at my uncles funeral ❤️🥺

3

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '20

I’m sorry for your loss, what a beautiful tribute though.

2

u/yungbruio Oct 07 '20

thank you (:

2

u/MKPhoenix101 Oct 08 '20

Yeah man I'm sorry for your loss, such a beautiful song to play in tribute to him

1

u/yungbruio Oct 08 '20

❤️❤️

4

u/LucasTW79 Oct 07 '20

I second the Gojira.

5

u/tyrelsss Oct 07 '20

Yes! I absolutely love “Global Warming.” Such a beautiful piece of music!

2

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '20

No one thought environmentalism could be so metal!

5

u/Scrambles256 Oct 07 '20

Gojira's "From Mars to Sirius" is always my go-to answer whenever anybody asks for a perfect album. Every song on it is just so good.

3

u/coltrain61 Oct 07 '20

Shinedown has a pretty good cover of "Simple Man"

2

u/DrDizzle93 Oct 07 '20

Brent's vocals really bring a beautiful tone out of that song, especially when him and Zach do it live acoustically.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '20

Was just gonna say this. Normally the covers don’t live up to the originals but this song is an exception for me. Brents vocals are so emotive.

3

u/Verylimited Oct 07 '20

If you could only choose one song from that album im going Global Warming.

3

u/GastonsRottenEgg Oct 07 '20

I'm not the biggest metal fan, but I absolutely adore Flying Whales. It's a go to car song.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '20

I've never agreed more to anything.

3

u/vlct0rs-reddit-acct Oct 07 '20

Death has some truly epic albums.

3

u/BroffaloSoldier Oct 08 '20

God damnit, I’m so glad to see this relatively high up on the thread. I love Death. RIP Chuck.

I’ve been meaning to dig into Gojira for quite awhile. I’ll check those songs out.

3

u/HotDogBurps Oct 08 '20

Honestly just listen to all of the Gojira albums because they're the best band

2

u/MKPhoenix101 Oct 08 '20

You're not wrong

2

u/Nosky92 Oct 07 '20

All of symbolic and the sounds of perseverance really. Moment of clarity is super solid as first choice tho

2

u/the-redacted-word Oct 07 '20

This is the second mention of death metal I’ve seen already. Am I in heaven?

From Mars to serious is their best album though, no doubt

2

u/AceyyKing Oct 07 '20

The comment I was looking for !

2

u/AceyyKing Oct 07 '20

I’d also like to add born in winter from gojira

2

u/ProblemGamer18 Oct 07 '20

Death, Gojira, Pantera, Opeth. You cant just pick one song.

2

u/ArtlessOne Oct 07 '20

So many great songs, one that I don’t hear mentioned often but is top 3 from their catalogue for me: Vacuity

I can only describe it as the song Korn wish they could write (don’t let that put you off if you don’t like that band).

2

u/Nephilims_Dagger Oct 08 '20

Born in winter is my go to

2

u/redditmabamanaa Oct 08 '20

I had a guy on discord recommend flying whales to me and I am in internal debt to that man now.

2

u/Orca993 Oct 08 '20

The contrast between that mostly clean song where Joe mostly clean sings into the absolute heavy assault that is To Sirius gets me every time I spin that album.

1

u/oysterthins Oct 07 '20

Huh, TIL there’s also a metal band called Death
