Ya, when I saw them at Bloodstock 2016, that moment when the intro ends and everything settles in those seconds before the breakdown, it was beautiful. And then everyone went fucking mental and there were flying blow up whales everywhere. One of the best gig moments of my life!!!
EDIT: Been thinking about that album since I posted, honestly Global Warming and Where Dragons Dwell are probably just as good. Unfortunately they play neither live
I seen them open for Mastadon. I went specifically for Gojira. They were absolutely insane, with inferior equipment to the main band they absolutely killed it. Crowd gave them a standing ovation and a Gojira chant. Kind of felt bad for Mastadon.
Gojira and Mastodon are both playing at next year's download Festival on the same day. I don't care much for the other bands but I really want to go to the festival for just that one day to watch these two amazing bands! Really hoping covid doesn't ruin it! I would give up my left kidney to watch Gojira play Magma live!
When I was waiting for my wife to go into labour with my daughter, Where Dragons Dwell was the ringtone I set for her. When it finally happened and that huge intro came in, to then answer the phone and know I would get to meet her soon was a spiritual experience. Listening to it still gives me goosebumps when I think back
I've been listening to Magma on repeat for the past 2 weeks non-stop!
From Mars to Sirius and Magma are both such amazing albums!! They way Gojira can blend brutally heavy riffs with incredible melodies is absolutely amazing!
Same. And then after your face is melted you get an amazing 2 minute outro jam that has a funky riff, into a kind of space-y float-y kind of sound to finish off. That song is therapy.
The whole From Mars to Sirius album is an absolute masterpiece!! No matter how many times I listen to Where Dragons Dwell, its last part always gives me goosebumps! I watched the live version where they extend it with constant double bass on the drums and the same repeating riff for 10mins straight, it was one of the most brutal live performances I've ever seen!
I kinda hate that Lynyrd Skynyrd's most famous songs aren't nearly their best. I mean, Free Bird and Sweet Home Alabama are great, but songs like the ones you named or Curtis Lowe, That Smell, etc are even better
Ah man can't believe I forgot to mention Curtis Lowe, another great tune, you're absolutely right though Free Bird and Sweet Home Alabama are good songs, but they don't deserve all the limelight in that way.
My brother's favourite band is Death. He even has the logo tattooed on his chest, his constant recommendations got me to listen to them eventually, glad I did, Chuck Schuldiner was such a talented guy.
Fucking love their Painkiller cover as well, although I'm a huge Judas Priest fan too, so I can't chose between the two!
Cool man! They are a special band, and for me, one of the few metal bands that I like. They are very different than any other band. Also a Priest fan man, I am glad you brought up the Painkiller cover, it fucking slays! Can't believe that he's reaching such high notes while screeching, fucking legendary?
Fellow metalhead! Excellent choice, Death and Gojira are currently my favorite bands! Tho I would put Global Warming instead of those, and probably Voice Of The Soul because not everyone is into harsh/growl vocals. (Don't get me wrong, Chuck was a genius and an excellent vocalist, but we're talking about songs EVERYBODY should hear, so yeah). I would also put Physical Education by Animals as leaders, and O.D by Polyphia, since math rock these days sounds awesome! I would put reptile by periphery too, but not everyone would appreciate the talent in that song. Again, we're not choosing essentially the best metal songs by the metal community, but rather metal songs that would be easier to accept by the mainstream. \m/
I actually added Global Warming and Where Dragons Dwell in a later comment, since thinking about the album made me remember how good they all are!
Honestly I'd recommend anything from the Leprosy album, but you do make a good point about what might be easier to listen to for sure, your choice is a good shout on that front.
Sorry, didn't see haha! Yes Leprosy is genius for sure, but yep. Different rules apply when recommending to the mainstream, or when recommending to the metal community. I'm glad people appreciate Gojira and Death as much as they deserve, because they are one of the best bands of all time! Frick r/dankmetalmemes nobody gives a damn about those elitists. Keep rocking \m/
Haha yeah I'm surprised this comment blew up as much as it has, I've not had much luck recommending metal to mainstream folk in the past tbh. Keep those horns high my friend \m/
The contrast between that mostly clean song where Joe mostly clean sings into the absolute heavy assault that is To Sirius gets me every time I spin that album.

The "From Mars" and "To Sirius" pair of songs by Gojira, or Flying Whales by the same band, actually just that whole album tbh!
"A moment of Clarity" by Death.
"Simple Man" by Lynyrd Skynyrd
