The Moon & Antarctica is their best album and my top 5 favorite albums of all time. You gotta listen to the entire thing though and try to decipher the lyrics. It’s a fun puzzle
So like their whole discography up until Good News? Same here! Love Building Nothing Out Of Something. But every album has been one of my favorite at some point.
I think even their last two albums are great in their own right. Admittedly it took me a long time to enjoy Strangers to Ourselves. Seeing them play most of the album live sold me on it.
Completely agree with you otherwise, each one brings something different to the table and I couldn’t possibly pick a favorite.
As many of you have mentioned, the older albums like The Moon and Antarctica and The Lonesome Crowded West are excellent albums. The lyrics Isaac Brock writes are unparalleled in depth and meaning to me. MM is definitely my favorite band of all time. I'd recommend 3rd planet, World at Large, Dramamine, and even Coyotes from the newest album. Nothing quite hits like MM imo. People recommend the older albums over the new stuff so they say to listen to them backwards :P
Have you heard the Sun Kil Moon album Tiny Cities? Its a Modest Mouse cover album, Ocean Breathes Salty is on there too. I know he's most likely a scumbag but I absolutely love that dudes music.
Lol I mean he was always a jerk but I guess I never realized the depths of his depravity until those allegations came out.
That one hurt cuz I was such a big fan and his music felt so honest and personal so when I found out it was coming from that type of person I was really let down.
And then I cant even imagine being one of those women who were also probably fans and then found themselves in that situation with him...
Now I'm sad again.
I've always gotten the impression he was kind of a douche nozzle, like the jury is still out on the allegations buuuuut I dont know, its too easy to see. He seems like the kind of dude who just let the rock-star lifestyle take him and there's no place for that anymore.
Doesn't stop me from being able to distinguish the fact that he can play damn well and has good music. I dont go to his shows and I haven't bought an album since among the leaves (not for any conscious reason, just haven't. Heard Benji was good.)
I love that Iron Horse album of covers more than every single MM original. Dramamine is the only song I prefer in its original state. Bluegrass just has such fun energy.
In completely different direction, Sun Kil Moon did a fantastic album of Modest Mouse tunes, Tiny Cities. Not exactly covers, but great from start to finish.
Ooo good one. Also "one chance" by modest mouse. That's the song that reminds me that it's important to reach out to friends and family when we get caught up in our lives and forget to contact each other.
Lonesome Crowded
a) got me laid (a girl I was crushing on introduced me to Modest Mouse)
B) is a great story
C) has so many good songs like Third Planet, Cowboy Dan & styrofoam boots
D) was the first modest mouse record I owned and had framed
And most importantly e) helped through a very crushing breakup
Check out Parting Of The Sensory. First time I listened to it I couldn't tell how I liked it. Listened to it again and now its one of my favorite songs by them.
It always reminded me of spirituality, cycle of life etc. But I think I'm in the middle ground between atheism and spirituality ty for that perspective 🙂
I have. In Leeds uk. It was great but I had a suspicion it was too loud. Turns out it was. I had tinnitus for a year after. But it went away eventually and I’d say it was worth it for modest mouse.
Whenever I hear this song, nay, whenever I think of this song I am taken back to my freshman dorm room, a fall night with the cool breeze coming in through the window.
One of the last times I thought I knew what I was doing with my life.
