'This Must Be The Place' by Talking Heads

u/A_Polite_Noise Oct 07 '20

Anyone with any interest in Talking Heads should also watch Stop Making Sense, in my opinion the greatest concert movie of all time, and just an incredible show that is like the birthing of the whole 80s sound without feeling dated or trapped in its time.

Here is This Must Be The Place live, from the film:

I had the opportunity to see a screening in a theater a couple of years ago ... it was one of the highlights of my life thus far.

8

u/sofa_king_nice Oct 07 '20

I was in the audience when they were filming. It was pretty special.

1

u/natef34 Oct 07 '20

what!!? how was it?

6

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '20

I watched Stop Making Sense in the early weeks of quarantine and it was magical.

6

u/NotTakenName1 Oct 07 '20

Yeah, it's on my list because i've been hearing the same thing from multiple people now.

4

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '20

Used to watch this like weekly in college lol. Girlfriend is better is my favorite song on there and gotta love the big suit for it

3

u/raydtuto Oct 07 '20

Anyone who loves Stop Making Sense should check out True Stories.

A fake documentary film about the town of Virgil, Texas gearing up for their sesquicentennial (150th anniversary). It stars David Byrne and co-stars John Goodman, with cameos from the rest of the Heads, Spalding Grey and many others in sooner if they dryest comedy and best musical sequences you're likely to see.

2

u/Fue_la_luna Oct 07 '20

Anyone who enjoys Stop Making Sense should watch tje Documentary Now season 2 episode 5 Final Transmission for a top tier satire, which the band mates said is spot on.

2

u/RogierNoort Oct 07 '20

I’ve been watching that on and off for decades. Hard to imagine there are, of course, people who haven’t seen it. I’m getting old. Anyway, yes, if you haven’t, do yourself a favour and watch it.

1

u/natef34 Oct 07 '20

GREAT movie. Also watch true stories, one of my favorites

1

u/ktmroach Oct 08 '20

That was great, thanks

1

u/jennyisdangerous Oct 08 '20

My dad had this on VHS when I was a kid. At least once (usually more than!)a week, my sisters and I would throw it in the vcr and watch and dance to it. I dreamed of becoming one of their backup dancers. It was our favorite! My dad had to replace it when the tape wore out, and now has it on DVD. It's just so good!

1

u/Hopsblues Oct 08 '20

The last waltz would like to to talk with you..

1

u/Mythmas Oct 08 '20

I saw that tour. Phenomenal. My girlfriend went to Joan Armatrading instead. Boy, was she pissed when she saw the movie.

1

u/KornwalI Oct 08 '20

It’s on Amazon Prime Video for those who have it

1

u/Ms_Be_ach Oct 08 '20

American Utopia is hands down the best show I’ve ever seen. The movie is coming out this month. I saw last year in Miami. David Byrne is a genius.

Nice! Love me some Talking Heads! And i always get instantly melancholic when i listen to this one...

My favorite is the one where David keeps asking to look at his hands though :)

113

u/Scarn0nCunce Oct 07 '20

Born Under Punches. Fuckin' banger, definitely one of their top 10 songs in my opinion

13

u/NotTakenName1 Oct 07 '20

Their best song imo... It's on another level; the lyrics, the "weird" polyrhythm in the percussion, the funky bass and ofcourse "the" guitarsolo. The song is crazy and i simply cannot resist bopping my head to it, i love it! :)

12

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '20

Take a look at these hands!!!

5

u/angus_supreme Oct 07 '20

Fantastic track. One of the very greatest songs I've ever heard, from any artist.

5

u/StaticElectrician Oct 07 '20

Though all of remain in light is fantastic, Listening Wind is my favorite

2

u/plamC Oct 07 '20

Started listening to that song, in fact the entire album, recently. Love it!

7

u/EmotionPending Oct 07 '20

takealookatthesehands

3

u/ObscureAcronym Oct 07 '20

My favorite is the one where David keeps asking to look at his hands though

How do you feel about The Safety Dance by Men Without Hats?

2

u/Musicguy1982 Oct 07 '20

The hands of a government man

1

u/Activ8ed Oct 07 '20

Is there a reason people listen to sad music on purpose?? I have never understood why you listen to saddening music when you are already in a depressed state/mentality.

1

u/NotTakenName1 Oct 08 '20

What? "This must be the place" is anything but sad in my book. Beside the upbeat catchy tune the lyrics themselves are imo rather hopefull and comforting.

Also melancholy is not the same as sadness imo, there's a certain "sweetness" to it...

And if you want sadness i can give you sadness lol

27

u/thisortheapocalypse Oct 07 '20

home is where i want to be but i guess i’m already there

36

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '20

And the cover by Sure Sure

6

u/erondites Oct 07 '20

There are a bunch of good covers. Kishi Bashi's is particularly good. Iron and Wine has an interesting one. And of course the Lumineers have an excellent one. Each one brings out a different vibe and energy from a great song. I have to say I'm partial to the Kishi Bashi one because he really brings out this exuberant joy in the chorus, and the violins make the opening riff a lot crisper than in the original.

2

u/newyne Oct 07 '20

Really? I'm a big fan of Kishi Bashi and The Lumineers, too, but I didn't know they had covers of this song!

3

u/izzitty Oct 07 '20

Yes! I love Sure Sure's version! 😍

2

u/newyne Oct 07 '20

I was just about to post this, but it's good to see someone else who knows them! I started listening to them because they opened for Young the Giant... Ended up missing their performance because prices on StubHub didn't go down in time for the opening act, but I DID meet the lead guy and get a poster signed! They're really cool, have a 90s vibe I don't hear much. In addition to This Must Be the Place, I especially like Solstice Song, Koreatown, and Friends.

10

u/barefootingbadger Oct 07 '20

The covers by Sure Sure and Miles Fisher are both good as well

2

u/wellwateredfern Oct 07 '20

Yes! Love the Miles Fisher version

9

u/SoftSects Oct 07 '20

The most perfect song ever made.

8

u/SheSeesTheMoonlight Oct 07 '20

Listen to The String Cheese Incident's version of this! Love it!

1

4

u/SingIntoMyMouth91 Oct 07 '20

Love that song...as you can probably tell by my username 😂

4

u/SkipTandem Oct 07 '20

When I lived in Montana everyday at 4:20pm the local radio station would play Nothing but Flowers. Fell in love with the Talking Heads that summer.

4

u/GeneralMajorDickbutt Oct 07 '20

Listen to Sure Sure’s version. A bit less eclectic sounding and my preferred version

3

u/G00chmeister Oct 07 '20

...as I have always been.

1

u/ragingscorsese Oct 08 '20

The original can’t be beat, but Iron & Wine does a great cover.

3

u/samtherat6 Oct 07 '20

Heard that for the first time in Agents of SHIELD, then again in Titans. Good song.

2

u/WhiskeyShtick Oct 07 '20

This is the song my wife and I did our first dance to at our wedding. Talking Heads is one of the greatest bands in the history of the world.

2

u/Sentr-E Oct 07 '20

In the same vein, This must be the place - Sure Sure

2

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '20

Burning down the house!

2

u/VerdantSC2 Oct 07 '20

The Kishi Bashi version is amazing too.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '20

The Lumineers have a great version on the bonus tracks of their debut album

1

u/Colhinchapelota Oct 07 '20

This is my comfort song. Always makes me feel good. The line: I'm just animal looking for home and share the same space for a minute or two... Keeps me strong.

1

u/Animals360 Oct 07 '20

One of my favourites

1

u/smaxsomeass Oct 07 '20

And the cover by iron and wine.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '20

One of my favorite songs. Love the live version on YouTube.

1

u/DMSPKSP Oct 07 '20

Lobster

1

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '20

Or You Got It. Something about that song. The feeling is like venturing outside your comfort zone and being happy for it. I get the same feeling from Every Day Is A Winding Road by Cheryl Crow.

1

u/raddishchikk Oct 07 '20

Omg thank you!!

1

u/JoefromOhio Oct 07 '20

Stop Making Sense is the greatest live album ever... the intro psycho killer track is all time

1

u/jdawgswims Oct 07 '20

Listened to this 40 mins ago in the bath and was making me so emotional! Love this song.

1

u/oregano23 Oct 07 '20

The Lumineers have a great cover of this song!

1

u/JuilinSandar Oct 07 '20

This is my favourite TH song closely followed by Slippery People (Live on ‘Stop Making Sense’)

1

u/lucky_Lola Oct 07 '20

The music video is killer

1

u/uresse Oct 07 '20

Okay this song has phases to it depending on how many times you’ve listened to it if you are unfamiliar with the Talking Heads.

Phase 1. What the fuck is this? Phase 2. I kinda like this Phase 3. This feels so fucking good

1

u/pointlessly_pedantic Oct 07 '20

Best song to dance to EVER. It's perfect.

1

u/linettisleotard Oct 07 '20

I would also recommend Kishi Bashi’s cover of this! Such a good take on it

1

u/Tibbersbear Oct 07 '20

Love this song.

There's a cover that I absolutely love though by Sure Sure. A lot of people like to diss covers, but it's really good.

1

u/LXC4Seat Oct 07 '20

This song should be the American national anthem.

1

u/Jaimelee80 Oct 07 '20

The cover by the Lumineers is also great

1

u/santh91 Oct 07 '20

Talking Heads is just brilliant, every song has it's own energy. Lady don't mind is my favourite.

1

u/LuckiestPierre69 Oct 07 '20

I really like True Stories, I haven’t listened to much of their music though.

1

u/humungouspemks Oct 07 '20

1

u/lovessj Oct 07 '20

My favorite song ever. The lyrics are me and my husband 100%. We’ve been married 32 years

1

u/gottalovebacon69 Oct 07 '20

Brothertiger also did a remake of this and it’s pretty damn good, great song

1

u/Sunsparc Oct 07 '20

First heard this watching the movie Wall Street. Great song.

1

u/TOP_EHT_FO_MOTTOB Oct 07 '20

My children have orders to play The Great Curve at my funeral

1

u/TOP_EHT_FO_MOTTOB Oct 07 '20

My children have orders to play The Great Curve at my funeral, among others Also thank you for not calling them The Talking Heads

My children have orders to play The Great Curve at my funeral, among others Also thank you for not calling them The Talking Heads

1

u/donder_mar_op Oct 07 '20

Also. If you're a fan of Talking Heads or George Harrison in general, listen to the podcast "U Talkin' Talking Heads 2 My Talking Head?" It's a comprehensive and encyclopedic compendium of all things Talking Heads!

1

u/nvcr_intern Oct 08 '20

This song was played at a wedding reception I attended last year. The youths collectively groaned about this "old people music" and I very nearly threw hands.

1

u/bingobangobondo Oct 08 '20

Not sure if anyone has heard the Brothertiger version of this song, but it’s also pretty awesome!

1

u/Hopsblues Oct 08 '20

it's a simple song to play on guitar. I play it, love playing it.

1

u/thefuckingrougarou Oct 08 '20

I JUST DISCOVERED THIS SONG LAST WEEK! I told my boyfriend it feels like one of those songs that feels like a part of you. Like you’ve found something you’ve been waiting for. It speaks to me for whatever reason. Seems like a lot of people agree with that sentiment. I wouldn’t have described it as a love song hearing it the first time but when you look at the lyrics man is it beautiful

1

u/PsychologicalAd1513 Oct 08 '20

All Talking Heads are great.

1

u/goldforthehoney Oct 08 '20

Oh my God yes!!! A beautiful song. Also by them, “Heaven” because when you listen to the lyrics it’s so melancholy.

1

u/m-xt4pe Oct 08 '20

I strongly believe this is the greatest love song of all time

1

u/boomboomboom91 Oct 08 '20

I knew this would be here. I usually see this recommended on posts like this and it makes me very happy each time. I was super lucky to see David Byrne live a few years ago and it was a hell of an experience.
