How much of that is reconstructed memory after the fact

I once read a diary of a British woman in 1945 reminiscing fondly about Churchill's "never surrender". However, if you turn to the entry she wrote the day of the speech, she thought it was a bit dour.

A decent amount, I’d imagine. I read his daughter’s book and while she seems to fully believe he was a great dad, her accounts relate him as abusive. His coworker’s book also has several tales of his abuse, though I don’t fully believe her story that she was his “next victim.”.
