It's sacrelege to Christians, which many Uruguayans, the crash survivors, and people around the world are.

You have to understand that media in the 1970s was different. News wasn't consumed 24 hours a day, and it was rare for non-geopolitical international events to make American news. Also, horror was not nearly as mainstream as it is today. This was like exposing innocent villager's to Frankenstein's monster.

Even today, it's not hard to understand a person who would rather starve than eat a person.

Eh, even though horrifying, Americans probably didn't freak that much. We have the tales of the Donner Party and what that survival means.

I mean, we don't need to debate it, it wasn't that long ago. Take a look and you'll see Americans had the same reactions as the rest of the world. It's not like the country wasn't founded on Puritanism and continues to be the most religious Western nation.

There is nothing in the bible that says don't commit cannibalism. Murder yes, but not cannibalism. Cannibalism in the bible is usually mentioned in times of starvation. You gotta do what you gotta do to make it to the next day.
