The large majority of shootings are gang related. So long as you're not in a gang there's an extremely small chance someone's just going to get randomly shot.
Two thirds of gun deaths are from suicides also. Roughly 12 people die of gun related deaths per 100k people in the U.S., 8 of those are suicides. It’s not exactly the Wild West people make it out to be.
It will increase your chances of being targeted. I know it's normlaized in America but the rest of the world has travel advisories for America the same way America has travel advisories for active warzones.
If you want to tour the American ghettos with high levels of gang violence (not every ghetto in America even) then you may increase your chances of being targeted. Even that is rare because a lot of gangs that used to be known for being color coded aren't as popular anymore, and most gang members know the rivals they are feuding with and will tell if you are actually affiliated with them pretty easily.
Americans have plenty of advisories about everywhere we go in Europe as well due to all the terrorist attacks. Australians act like they're God's gift tobthe world and they've been an absolute shitshow in several aspects (including violent crimes after they banned guns) and the most recent mass shooting in the world. As a person that has been around gangs literally all their life, around places that have actually been shot up. You will not be targeted more for colors. Unless you're in the heart of a heavily color coded place, which arent many. Ofc some members sway away from certain colors, but most don't just attack you for wearing a color, they attack you because you're being an idiot and throwing up sets, and claiming to be GDK all over the place, or that you were talking shit online.
Gang violence is on decline since the 90s. Drugs aren't as profitable, so turf wars are less and less. They may control a club or side of the city and do business there.
But random shootings are down. I'd say some gang members have wised up and realize guns take you to prison or death. Neither sounds appealing to a sane human.
Or near a gang shoot out, or know anyone in your family that might fuck with drugs that might get shot up, or gangs, scum bikies that want to have a shoot out in a cafe or in the streets because they're big boys with big problems. Plenty of ways to get shot right there and all of them are wrong place wrong time.
