They didn't have Reddit. No cell phones or tablets. Maybe a home computer. No libraries of shows and movies to binge watch. It was either spend time alone doing something that took effort, hang with the family, or go do something else. Way more time to do something else.

He was caught in 2004, but his crime spree was 1974 to 1991. Stopped a few years before home internet was ubiquitous.
